Guest NoCalMike Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 Well the Oscars have Sundance and IFC there to remind them that it isn't always the box office hits that deserve the awards, yet the music industry has nothing of the sort. Sure you can find the music if you look hard enough, but there is no way the Norah Jones song(which is a decent song) is a 5-grammy winner. Each and every passing year the Grammys seem to turn more into the Billboard music award prequels. Handing out awards to whatever is contraversial or platinum ten times over.

Mr Rant mentioned the primary problem, which is that a show featuring lesser-known (or totally obscure) musicians wouldn't draw shit for ratings. Of course, if the record industry would shift gears to a more quality-oriented business strategy rather than assuming for the public that they'll only enjoy garbage, the entire problem would be solved. But that sort of solution exists solely in cloud cuckoo land, with unicorns and houses made of gingerbread. The only way that an award show like this would work is if it got major, high profile celebrity backing.

Every now and then the Grammy people try to prove they're "edgy" by throwing in left-of-center artists like Beck and Radiohead--whom, in spite of their off-beat natures, have both proven to be commercially viable--in major categories, but a smaller band/act is easily lost in the crowd. There's just too many bands releasing music--the Oscars may be able to recognize smaller films, but that's due to significantly fewer "award worthy" films released in a given year than albums.

It's becoming increasingly irksome the way some people namedrop such bands (Beck, Radiohead, etc) to give legitimacy to their poor tastes.

Outside of the Sundance channel, is the festival even shown on t.v.? Yeah my point was that an Independant music awards type thing would be just as viable. I think the major stumbling blocks are that since it's so much more expensive to make a movie than it is to make an album, you get many more albums released in a given year and so it would be hard to get one's head around. The other, and probably more major problem, is that there's no one to organize it. There's no infrastructure or organization that would have the authority to, really, and anyone who wanted to organize such a thing, considering the time and investment involved, would probably find it more worthwhile to just create and promote either a local festival or a major tour of independant bands.
