SEOUL, South Korea (AP) The interception of a U.S. reconnaissance plane by North Korean fighter jets heightens tension on the Korean Peninsula amid fears that the North could make nuclear bombs within months.

 

Lt. Cmdr. Jeff Davis, a Pentagon spokesman, said four North Korean fighter jets approached the U.S. plane over the Sea of Japan on Sunday, coming as close as 50 feet. One used its radar to identify the plane as a target, but there was no hostile fire, he said.

 

Davis said it was the first such incident since April 1969 when a North Korean plane shot down a U.S. Navy EC-121 surveillance plane, killing all 31 Americans aboard.

 

In an interview with 14 U.S. newspapers, President Bush repeated the U.S. stance that the situation can be resolved with diplomacy. According to The Baltimore Sun, Bush said that while the military option has not been taken off the table, it would be a last resort in dealing with the country's moves toward nuclear weapons production.

 

The interception fit a pattern of recent North Korean actions that could be an effort to pressure the United States into negotiations on chief Northern aims: a nonaggression treaty and aid for its dilapidated economy.

A couple weeks ago the North Koreans actually sent a fighter into South Korean airspace, where it loitered for five minutes until the South Koreans scrambled five F-5 fighters and chased the fighter out.

 

I wonder if Kim Jong-Il is doing this in preparation for an invasion of South Korea, if he's in cahoots with Saddam and is doing this as a distraction, or is just trying to get more oil and supplies for his country. He's sending mixed messages, to save the least.

Don't you mean General MACARTHUR?

 

The U.S. will never be able to pull off a surprise invasion again, IMO. At the time of Inchon, UN forces were already engaged with the North Koreans and they were pulling back across South Korea, so the invasion came as a major surprise to the South Koreans.

 

Nowdays, with so much media coverage an invasion force would be announced before the troops even bordered ships. Hell, they're reporting the Nimitz battle group leaving for Iraq and it's going to take them a month to get to the Persian Gulf! It would be impossible to send a huge invasion force anywhere without the truth leaking out.

 

Plus, two wars equal more casualties, and would take a big hit out of the U.S. military if they were to go to war on two fronts.

I really, really dislike how much information the Media gets access to with our troop movements. It doesn't help us at ALL.

Yeah if we ever lose a large amount of U.S soldiers it will because of the media.

And then the media will show all the grisly footage, triggering off anti-war protests up the yin-yang and forcing a withdrawal from somewhere, thus giving the opposition an instant victory like in Somalia after the troops were pulled out after the "Black Hawk Down" incident.
