Why exactly did they book Hogan-Vince for WM?

Recommended Posts

Guest Redhawk

It seems like no one (marks or smarks) was surprised that WWE would have Hulk Hogan and Vince McMahon wrestling each other at Wrestlemania. But I can't really think of why: Is this match going to be a big draw? Was anyone clamoring for this feud amongst 50-year olds? Is this just Vince stroking his own ego and booking himself to go over wrestling's biggest star (historically)? Come to think of it, this feud has been very paint-by-numbers and it's not exactly doing anything for me? What is the point?

Vince says we were dying to see it.

Vince is a genius.

There's your answer.

Few people here represent the majority of the fanbase. Perhaps the rubes really want to see this match. Doesn't seem appealing to me, but then Rock/Hogan didn't seem appealing to me, so I'm not a good judge on these things.

I've been wondering this myself for months. Everyone, Vince and Hogan included, ALWAYS put it over as a "dream match". Ever since Hogan returned last year it's been hyped and hyped as something that should happen and will be big. I have no clue why. Hogan versus a Non-wrestler? Uh yeah, big dream match there. I'm sure theres tons of kids sitting around the lunch table saying "who would win in a fight? The Hulkster or Mr. McMahon?". I don't even understand the issue between them. Like why does Hogan have heat with Vince? He didn't even work for him for years.

Actually I feel the same way about Lesnar vs. Angle. If it wasn't for this forum and the hype WWE brings up in interviews I would never even consider them fighting a big deal.

Hogan needs to go on top, but nobody is going to job for him except another old man.

It's a fitting end for a guy who's made a name for himself as a legend but burned every bridge in the locker room. Going over a guy who isn't even really a wrestler.

I can see why Brock-Angle would be anticipated by all types of fans. Angle is an Olympic medalist and NCAA champion wrestler. Brock is an NCAA champion wrestler. Both are clearly very good wrestlers, even in the eyes of rubes.

But Hogan-Vince? I don't think there are any kids wondering who would win that. When I was still a little markish in high school, I NEVER wanted to see Vince wrestling, and that was during the Austin feud. Why would kids wanna see him wrestle now?

I honestly and wholeheartedly beleive that Vince McMahon beleives in his heart and in his mind that it was his on screen character that made 98-00 so profitable. Whereas a regular person would think...man who would win between the WWE's two biggest stars Steve Austin of 98 and Hulk Hogan of 87?...Vince McMahon thinks...the fans must be wondering who would win between the WWE's two biggest stars Hulk Hogan and Vince McMahon?

Yeah, but outside this forum when is the NCAA thing hyped? When I think of Brock I think "big monster hoss". When I think of big matches for Brock I think Austin, Rock, Goldberg. Kurt Angle, a cowardly heel, is the last person that comes up. If Brock was like Kurt-sized and actually wrestled like a NCAA champion then I could see it.

And I agree with bps. Vince probably does believe that him vs. Hogan is a dream match. Hogan seems to believe it too. It's sad.

If Vince had the balls, He should use Hogan's Testimony at the Trials as Motivation for this match up...Of course Vince won't do that...

There is an great history behind these two but WWE won't use it and will create a stupid plot for this one...

But...Didn't Hogan's testimony HELP Vince's side? The whole case was riding on someone getting up on the stand and saying "Vince told us to use steroids". And Hogan got up there and said there was no pressure and that it was his own choice.

Yeah but deillousional Vince could just say "You tried to put me out of Business" Hogan goes "I Made your business"...

Vince: I made Hulkamania...

Hogan: The fans made Hulkamania!

Fans: ZZZZZZZZZZ....

think of it as the rubber neck factor. Like driving by a bad car accident and you just let your neck turn to watch as you drive by. No one expects it to be good. Not even the rubes. No one cares. They're just down for the ego clash that these two people represent.

We oughta create a Special Rock Thread where we just reminise his greatest lines and think of the good days...

Here's hoping that Helldorado II or whatever gets delayed...

I think they do it play it up a lot. When Heyman began to talk a lot as Brock's manager (like, when Brock started to actually have matches), he would always talk about how he was an NCAA champ. And since the debut of Team Angle they've constantly talked about Brock's college career, and in particular that he was Shelton's teammate. Plus, when Rock and Brock were feuding, Rock would say stuff like, "You might be a NCAA champion blah blah blah..."

hey somebody had to job to Hogan, it might as well be Vince

plus there are some old school fans who hate Vince and worship Hogan so maybe they want to get those people to order the ppv

Hey, anything leading Hogan closer to retirement is all right with me.

Besides, a 15 minute clusterfuck "match" is the perfect opportunity for a food run. ;)

Like him or not, putting Hogan on the card will bring in some PPV buys and if they have him on the card, it needs to be a special attraction match. Putting him in a match with Vince seems pretty harmless. The alternatives are a lot worse.

Keep in mind, with Angle out, who's to say the Hulkster wouldn't get shifted into a championship match with Lesnar? Probably won't happen, but we all know Hogan the politician. "One more run for Hulkamania, blah blah blah..."

And I don't want to spoil anything on Smackdown, but reading through the read up here, its pretty clear that somebody who likes fantasy booking is also someone who hasn't read the spoilers for this week's show.

Careful what you ask for...

Hogan and McMahon is a harmless match that better not be anywhere near the top of the card, but for some scary reason I keep seeing it being the second to last match at WM this year. I'm pretty sure Hogan will go over here because he still owes HHH a job and I just couldn't see HHH being to keen on going over a guy who jobbed to McMahon. Just remember, with each match that Hogan is in, that's one more match on the ever quickening road to retirement city.

Apparently the plan is that Hogan can KEEP on wrestling if he wins (well, Hogan doesn't really wrestle, but you know).

I personally would be thrilled to not see either one of them in the ring. But if they absolutely must have a match, putting them together is the best thing to do.

I think the real question is: who carries the match in this one?

Hogan can be a somewhat smart worker when he wants to be, and you always have Patterson to lay something out.

Most marks I know sadly are more excited about Hogan vs Vince than Angle vs Lesnar. Their reason was that Vince has a better chance of winning that Angle does. :D

No he doesn't. Triple H got the job back on June 6th, 2002

My point of view has stayed the same on this match. If this is Hogan's final match then I can accept it and just kind of yawn through it, however if this is just another stop on the "I'm retired until next week" trip, then there is no need for this match. Even marks should know that this match should be reserved for the END of Hogan's career.

I agree, but I think Hogan's career is destined to end in an anti-climatic way. As in, his last match will be a six man schmozz where nothing in particular happens when he's found dead in his hotel the next day from a tanning lotion overdose. He will not simply say "One big last one" and call it a day. He will not stop wrestling until he's dead, or has pissed off every person that can afford his services.

I laugh at those guys who say "Hogan just wants one more run." No he doesn't. He wants 30 or 40. If Vince said "we're going to keep the belt on you for the next two years," no way would Hogan say "why don't we give those young guys some elevation instead, brother?" He will hog the spotlight forever.

i really don't care about this match and i don't know why the put it as a DREAM MATCH, the only Dream Match involving Vince that i would wanna see, would have to be against Bret...

I won't even assume that Hogan goes over. Vince is the one guy who's political power is greater than Hogan, HHH, Austin or anyone else. So if Vince decides at the last minute that he wants to go over, he'll go over. And something tells me Vince wins this round, and they have a rematch at Backlash or Judgment Day or whatever.
