Guest NoCalMike Report post Posted March 5, 2003 A Foods Co. right by me is hiring full-time with full benefits. I am not sure what positions are available but for the life of me I don't want to be a cashier. The good thing is, I would be union which usually offers good things. I wouldn't want to have to work weekends though, and with a Grocery Store I am not sure how set your schedule is, or if it changes every week regarding which days you have to work. Guest treble charged Report post Posted March 5, 2003 I worked part-time in the meat department of a grocery store for around a year or so, and I rarely got a whole weekend off. I'd get Sundays off more often than I would Saturdays. Of course, our store didn't have a union, so I got dicked around a lot in hours, but if you have one, you shouldn't have those problems. Guest razazteca Report post Posted March 5, 2003 Any job with benefits is a good thing, you dont know how hard it to find a job with benefits, your not going to find that at fast foods joint. If you don't want to be a cashier then your options are prolly bagger or shopping cart duty or late night stocker. With the money you make you can waist it on sports jerseys. Guest Bosstones Fan Report post Posted March 6, 2003 Working in a the bakery/deli area of a grocery store isn't bad, but under no circumstances should you tolerate anything less than $8.00 an hour.
Guest Eyeball Kid Report post Posted March 6, 2003 Cashiering's not all that bad, actually. I hate people, but I managed to tolerate it.
Guest MaxPower27 Report post Posted March 6, 2003 I cashiered at WalMart during XMas time, so yeah, it can be dealt with. If it's full benefits, TAKE IT.
Guest Just call me Dan Report post Posted March 6, 2003 I worked at a grocery store, and the schedule is susally what you request, but there can be some oddball changes. Best bet is to be a deli worker or something in that department. You will more than likely have multiple managers, which will produce a bunch of bullshit work asked of you, but it can be ok. I dicked around a lot and still busted my ass when it counted. It's not bad at all, go for it.

Guest TheGame2705 Report post Posted March 6, 2003 I worked as a cashier at Shaw's. I got sick of the dick manager. It's not bad. Stock pays more and you do less..... Word of advice, do NOT work for a discount supermarket. Those are usually dirty and the people are garbage that work with you. I worked at Price-Rite and the people were so damn ignorant. I worked for a union grocery store when I was in high school. Pay is a little better then non union of course but you do have to pay union dues. For the most part the union probally has negoiacted a pretty good benifits package so your duductions for health insurance should leave you with a few bucks. And if your open weekends, you'll work your share of weekends. Seniority rules in a union environment. Not sure if you go to school or what, but you can make a career out of a groccery store. I went out with a gal who's dad started as a bagger in high school and had worked his way up to store manager. BTW, what kind of employee discount do you get? Does it apply to liquor? Guest crandamaniac Report post Posted March 6, 2003 My uncle started out working as a stock man for Food Lion. He has since became the head of Produce for the Lowes Food here. He makes good money, gets good benefits and everything. So you can make money there. Or if anything, take the job to live off on, then look for a better job
Guest saturnmark4life Report post Posted March 7, 2003 I work in one here in the UK, and despite hating people yeah it's alright. You'd think i'd have got sick of it by now cos I don't do anything else at the moment, but it's easy money. I didn't really fancy being a cashier at first but I can pretty much do it with my eyes closed now and my management are all nice, which REALLY helps.
