The Smart Marks' Countdown: Iraq

I think Iraq wanted to know 48 hours in advance of any U2 spy plane flying over Iraq.

Bush did not speak about a draft, no, but many Congressman wrote articles about how if we were to go to war, the draft should be reinstated because "it should be a shared sacrifice among all Americans".

And of course they'll see to it that if any draft is reinstated in the event of Iraq/North Korea/Saudi Arabia/etc that no son daughter or grandchild of theirs will have to face it. They'll leave the shared sacrifices to Mr and Mrs. Bluecollar.

I've got a question for all the pro war guys on the board, what do you think is going to happen to the region after the war is over?

First off, I'm not "pro-war," and I don't think anyone else is, either. I don't want to see a war. However, I realize that it's almost certainly inevitable, and I realize it's an acceptable last resort in dealing with a man who has defied and threatened the world for a dozen years.

That said, a new regime would have to be installed, one founded on the principles of democracy. The radical Islamic leaders might have a cow, but if the people are happy, then there wouldn't be a lot they could do about it. Democracy liberates, empowers, and elevates, and once you expose people accustomed to tyranny to what it can do, I don't think they'd want to go back.

Winning the peace won't be easy, though, and there will need to be a military presence there to make sure things run smoothly. Since France, Russia, and Germany are so concerned about the precious oil deals under the new regime, I nominate them to be the peacekeeping force. They're certainly not doing a goddamn productive thing now.

I just want to know why you think this war will make things better rather than worse?

I doubt much will change in the long-run. That part of the world we're dealing with is a lost-cause. My biggest problem with the war on terror is that I don't think it goes far enough. It is impossible to eliminate radical Islam and it is impossible to eliminate the concept of jealousy in the world. For the U.S to completely prevent risks on the scale of 9/11 is to eliminate the anti-American sentiment being fueled everyday in that part of the world. That's why I'm not all that big on us spending so much time tracking down Bin-Laden, there's a million clones of him in that part of the world. Trying to eliminate hatred, jealousy and the religious culture fueling such things is a task that even we could never accomplish. To be honest, the makeup of the U.S system is not equipped properly to be a kick-ass imperial power. George Bush wont be President forever so a task as big as a Middle East reconstruction has a snow balls chance in hell. All it would take is for a left Democrat to take office to completely change directions and not "finish the job" in places like Iran, Afghanistan, Iraq and all the other stone age level countries we'd get involved with. A total reformat of the Islamic Mid-East would be a 50 year task!

The war on terror could easily turn out to be a waste of time and money if we continue to do it half-assed. Maybe we should take a Pat Buchanan stance and just ignore that part of the world and retaliate BIG TIME when something occurs. For this war on terror to be a success we need to develop an "all or nothing" apporach. Either we wreck up the Middle East and reshape it to our liking (not likely considering Bush could be gone this time 2005) or we just pull out everywhere and just wait to retaliate when the next attack to our people or our economic interests (see Desert Storm) occurs.

A criminal thug will no longer be the leader. That alone will make things better.

A lot of protestors are saying that the war is over oil. But the funny thing is oil seems to be a reason that France, Germany, and Russia are against a war.

I want to know why we need 48 hours of dropping approx 3000 bombs in order to take out Saddam?(this seems to be the general idea of how the war will BEGIN) Is that kind of force necessary to take out one man? I still am not sure why a full scale war is necessary if we are really just interested in "removing Saddam from power" And who's to say we don't throw another thuggish character in there because he can benefit us for the time being until 10 years down the road we realize how horrible he is.

NorCalMike, it's a little harder than you think to take a despot down. He will have some that will fight for him.

*bump*

I was watching a SNL rerun the other day and they aired the commercial for action figures for the film Philadelphia (fully equipped with backpack missiles, etc).

I'd like to see some action figures made out of this situation. Let's have good guys like Bush, Powell, Rumsfeld, and Tony Blair (with an exclusive send-away Condi Rice) and bad guys like Saddam, Osama, Kim Jong-il, and Jacques Chirac (with a send-away Janeane Groffalo). They can have playsets (White House, Evil Cave) and vehicles (Bush Mobile, camel). Maybe even Battle Armor versions.

There's money in this!

I'm not sure I'd consider Bush a "good guy." And I sure as hell wouldn't put Chirac and Janeane in the same category as dictators.

Because our country doesn't allow assassination.

How is Bush not a good guy. Whether or not you agree with him, how has he shown in this situation that he isn't a quote unquote a Good Guy.

I'd probably make some changes to the action figures. Janeane Garofolo believes what she believes. However Hussein welcomes dissent and it's helping him. Make any Bad Guys who mean well, Zombies of Hussein.

Bush is not an evil man like Hussein or bin Laden (they are inhuman scum). I just don't like the guy or his policies.

Well compared to Hussein and Bin Laden Bush is a good guy. That was the point of the action figure idea.

I have no doubt that George Bush wants America to be #1 in every way possible. I just disagree in some of the ways he wants to achieve and/or go about this and possibly "what it takes" to make this happen and/or what being "the best country in the world" means.

I just heard on Fox News, that Saddam has indeed booby trapped his oil fields. This is what I thought he might do. So this is shapping up to be very interesting situation. Because I think Saddam will push the button and torch the fields. So beside the threat of possible biological and chemical weapons being used on our troops and the Iraqi people, now we have a big environmental threat as well.

Not officially but we've had people in Iraq over the past decade who have attempted to take Saddam out. Due to all the Saddam lookalikes, it wasn't sucessful.

Did anyone else see or read about the 12 Iraqi soldier who tried surroundering to British Soldiers last Friday. They thought that British live ammo practice, was the start of the war.

Also, taking Saddam out won't make one bit of difference. Someone will just replace him. If the object is regime change, then the whole Iraqi government has to be taken out, and it would take a war to do it.

Right now there are 3 members of the "Coalition of the Willing" (US, UK, Australia). Does anyone think that any other countries will jump on board, and if so, which ones? The only possibilities I've heard are Spain and Italy.

They will resent the fuck out of the US if we put in a new government.

Mark my words.
