Who else likes Country?

Recommended Posts

Guest Silence

Ok, I used to listen to nothing but rock. Then I started to get a feel for funk. Now I've been listening to the Country station at work. I like the Dixie Chicks, Alan Jackson, Trick Pony, Garth, Shania, Johnny Cash...

Anyone else getting into Country???

I like real country, I hate this pop country sound. About the only current performers I can really stand are those who really hark back to a more traditional sound, like Alan Jackson (who is quite possibly the best singer/songwriter going today), George Strait, Vince Gill, Travis Tritt, the Dixie Chicks and Allison Krause with Union Station. I'd highly recommend that you try to get into bluegrass.

Of the older guys, I love Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Jerry Reed, the recently passed Johnny Paycheck, Willie Nelson, the too soon gone Keith Whitely and the extremely underrated Roger Miller.

I like the old country guys who sung about drinking, hell raising or prison.

David Allan Coe - The black sheep of Country

Hank Williams Jr.

Jerry Reed - mainly because of Smokey & The Bandit

Johnny Cash

Merle Haggard

Waylon Jennings

Willie Nelson

etc.

I don't like any of that Conway Twitty type shite and i despise "pop country". I also can't stand Bluegrass because i hate the twaaaang.

I do like the blues which could be considered "country".

WD, I want to check out more Waylon Jennings. Him and Johnny Cash make a cameo on a Trick Pony song, and he sounds cool. :)

I've got the Essential Waylon Jennings, it's a good primer if you want to get into him. If you want to download some stuff, I recommend:

Only Daddy That'll Walk the Line

You Asked Me To

Waymore's Blues

Just to Satisfy You

Lucille (You Don't do Your Daddy's Will)

Good Hearted Woman

Luckenbach, Texas

Never Could Toe the Line

I should have mentioned Don Williams too. He was Eric Clapton's favorite singer and guitarist for a number of years and got him explore country. Clapton's live version of Tulsa Time is smoking.

There's exactly three country musicians I like.

Willie Nelson

Johnny Cash

Junior Brown.

I detest pop country even more than nu metal.

My all-time favorite bands are AIC(By-far) and Smashing Pumpking but there are few bands now I can get into so most of my radio time is spent on country music stations and I watch CMT and GAC alot.

I've only recently got into Johnny Cash but have been listening to country for 8 years now. I don't hve any favorites artists but Gary Allen is a good starting point for a rock fan trying country out.

There's some older country stuff I like but I mostly listen to whatever's associated with the rather loose alt country/americana tag. Basically a whole massive range of diverse artists whose sound is at least some part influenced by country/folk but wouldn't be seen anywhere near Nashville. Wilco's 'Being There' album first got me to check out this type of music.

glad to see so many people appreciate the talent of johnny cash...

and to whoever mentioned roger miller.... rock the fuck on!!!

since my father actually grew up when these guys were in their prime, i was exposed to insane amounts of country as a kid. some of it stuck and most of it made me cringe but roger miller fucking rules!

"ding me, dang me, they're gonna get a rope and hang me... hang me from the highest tree..."

I'm more of an alt-country guy--early Wilco, Uncle Tupelo, Neko Case, early Old 97s, etc.

i enjoy wilco, uncle tupelo, jayhawks, etc. but i never really considered it country. just always thought of it in the same vein as other MN bands like soul asylum. post punk guys fucking around with acoustic guitars.

But there are undeniable country inflections in those bands. I haven't been able to fully embrace straight country--the traditional kind, not this pop shit--but the time will come, I'm sure.

well, to be honest, most 'traditional country' is shit. johnny cash is almost unique in that he transcends barriers. he can sing 'rusty cage' and make it his. i couldn't say the same about other hacks like george jones, merle haggard, etc. with trad. country, more often than not, it is the song, not the singer that can pass the test. how else do you explain the statler bros. "flowers on the wall" while serving up a whole heaping helping of shit otherwise. and trust me, i have driven cross country in the back of a station wagon for 18 hours listening to that crap.

It was I who mentioned Roger Miller and you might want to check out Jerry Reed and Tom T. Hall too if you haven't if you like Roger.

I say I dig the personalities of a lot of the most traditional guys and the songs, but the voices can be give or take. The Statler Brothers actually have a lot of clever, off kiltered songs but those never really made the cuts as singles back in the day. The did a lot of those during the variety show they had on TNT and it was nice to see an attempt at a straight old school variety show. Flowers on the Wall, however, has to be head shoulders their best song and just a stroke of brilliance.

I am not really into country. Even though I do like Johnny Cash. Some songs are ok, but country music just doesn't connect with me much. But, I don't hate country like I used to.

Any of you guys ever heard of Johnny Rebel?

Man, I dunno if that's classed as country (I doubt it), but that man has some issues!

I like old country, it had it's own identity, it was so unique and you could feel the heart involved in the music. Now, while I certainly don't mind looking at some of the eye candy there is in today's country music scene (Shania, Faith, Dixie Chicks) I am not a big fan of the new Stadium-sounding type country music. Oh, my sister bought Dixie Chick tickets the same day I bought wrestling tickets....she may need someone to go with.....should I go?

I hear the Chicks put on a good show and I like them as they have a sound rooted in tradition and blue grass. Their cover of Landslide is picture perfect. Who's opening for them?
