Bin Laden Capture imminent?

World's Most Wanted Man Continues to Elude Authorities

Saturday, March 08, 2003

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — The walls may be closing in on Usama bin Laden after the capture of one of his most trusted lieutenants, but the world's most wanted man has survived a lifetime of close calls, and has made narrow escapes his calling card.

Will this time be any different?

Intelligence agencies are acting on a trove of information found during the March 1 arrest of alleged al-Qaida No. 3 Khalid Shaikh Mohammed. Pakistani military sources have told The Associated Press that U.S and Pakistani intelligence have narrowed the search for bin Laden to a remote 350-mile corridor from the southwestern Pakistani town of Chaman to the Afghan-Iranian border.

Former Taliban and Taliban in hiding have told The AP that bin Laden is constantly on the move, usually with an entourage of less than 10 people, and there were reports Friday -- denied by senior Pakistani and U.S. officials -- that at least one of his sons was captured.

But officials and counterterrorism experts say it may be premature to count out the billionaire fugitive. The U.S. military has not confirmed any operations in the corridor, and even if bin Laden is in the region, catching him will be a formidable task.

"He's a single individual who has a lot of money at his disposal, and a network of people who work with him and for him and who are willing to go out on a limb to hide him," Col. Roger King, a spokesman for the U.S. military at Bagram Air Base, near the Afghan capital Kabul, said Saturday. "Certainly, that makes it a challenge to catch him."

Bin Laden apparently escaped an international dragnet at least three times before.

In December 2001, U.S. and Afghan troops surrounded a giant cave complex in the eastern Afghan region of Tora Bora, and on Dec. 10 intercepted a radio transmission that was believed to have come from the al-Qaida leader.

U.S. warplanes blanketed the area with bombs, but the Americans relied largely on local Afghan forces on the ground. Hundreds of al-Qaida suspects are believed to have escaped across the border into Pakistan, and bin Laden may have been among them.

Intelligence officials believe bin Laden has been hiding in the mountains between the two countries ever since. He has not been seen since a November 2001 videotape, but several audiotapes reputedly made by the terror chief have been released in recent months.

In August 1998, the Clinton Administration ordered a cruise missile strike on two of bin Laden's terrorist training camps in Afghanistan after al-Qaida orchestrated the bombings of two U.S. embassies in Africa. Bin Laden is believed to have been at the Zhawar Kili Al-Badr camp for a meeting with several of his top men, but left shortly before some 70 Tomahawk cruise missiles slammed into the dusty complex.

Bin Laden could have been caught in Sudan in 1996, before the October 2000 bombing of the USS Cole, the Africa embassy bombings and the Sept. 11 attacks.

Clinton administration officials have told The Associated Press they tried to convince authorities in bin Laden's native Saudi Arabia to allow Sudan to deport him for trial there. But the Saudis refused, fearing a trial would destabilize the country, the officials said on condition of anonymity. In May of that year he fled to Afghanistan.

The near misses have given bin Laden an aura of invincibility among his supporters, but that could be fading under the pressure of the biggest manhunt in history.

Bin Laden's Taliban protectors are gone, and top confidantes like Mohammed and former al-Qaida leader Abu Zubaydah are in U.S. custody. Mohammed Atef, al-Qaida's military chief, was killed in the U.S. bombing that ousted the Taliban, and another top al-Qaida operative was killed in Yemen in November when an unmanned U.S. Predator drone fired a missile at his car.

"The people who have been helping him stay elusive are getting captured or killed, so the chances of him getting caught now are much brighter than they were six months ago," said security analyst Talat Massood, a retired Pakistani general. "Bin Laden has shown many times that he has the capacity to survive, but conditions are not favorable for him now. The noose is tightening."

Michael Swetnam, a counterterrorism specialist at the Washington-based Potomac Institute for Policy Studies, said the United States is trying to act faster on information like that obtained in the Mohammed arrest. He said bin Laden has forced the change because of his ability to anticipate American intelligence.

"It really is a chess game. He has escaped two or three times before, mostly because he has been a real student of our operational process," said Swetnam. "He slips through the cracks because he knows where the cracks are."

I saw this on the Fox News channel about a half-hour ago. This story is taken from their website.

If we catch him, I'm all about a televised execution.

I remember reading in Guliani's book that President Bush promised him he would get to execute him.

If they catch him- put it on PPV with all the $ going to the Twin Towers Fund or something similiar

Nah, take him to New York and charge people $1000 a pop to hit him with a bat. You'll still have gobs of people lining up to take a swing. Reduce the price to $500 after he dies. The whole thing can be sold on PPV for $50. You want an economic stimulus package, there it is.

(Note for pantywaists: I am being facetious.)

This would be very nice but I'm not holding my breath.

Me either, really. He's eluded capture plenty of times before. This does look to be our best chance to capture him. Besides the military presence we have there, Pakistan is helping us, and senior CIA officials flew to the area a few days ago. With all the firepower and brainpower we have there, I'd be really disappointed if he gets away again.

Isn't he dead yet? I figured he died of kidney failure during the bombing of Afghanistan. The last video tape he sent out had him looking like he was at death's door.

He did look terrible during his last video appearance. That was over a year ago, and it's highly doubful he got very good medical attention. The gov't thinks he's alive, and until it's proven otherwise, you have to assume that he is.

Since everyone will be lining up to take shots at Bin Laden. I'll take a bat to that 2nd in command Zawahri.

Wasn't he unable to move his arm in the last video or something along those lines?

I'd rather Bush could catch rising unemployment and national debt than Osama Bin Laden.

I'm not expecting a capture anytime soon either. Hell, we've still got people evading authorities in the mountains of our own country.

I say kill the fucker or whatever also, but wouldn't a public (and probably very gory) execution be a little savage on our part? We're made of better stuff than having him killed in Central Park with thousands in attendance and millions watching on TV or whatever other dream scenarios people have. PPV show of him gradually passing out with various monitoring machines showing his body slowly shutting down via a lethal injection.

I must once again propose catapulting into a huge brick wall. Granted it would be a quick death but their would be major ops for instant replay, Slo-Mo, multiple camera angles.

We could even make him where a headband with a camera for a eye level shot of the wall rushing towards him at 55 mph.

How do you think the Al Qaeda members who will be sentenced to death be executed. Will it be lethal injection or would the military tribunal have different rules and something like hanging would be allowed.

If it's military hanging or a firing squad is a good possibility.

But it'll probably end up being lethal injection because the usual types will bitch about us mistreating prisoners while ignoring the fact that POWs are treated differently.

No, not really. When you come to the realiziation that this man is not human, it will be easier to handle. He is a worthless, pitiful excuse for a human being that should suffer as much as possible.

Lethal Injection my ass. I wasnt this man hung, shot, or stabbed so we can slowly watch him bleed to death.

If Timothy McVey is executed normally, I don't see why Osama should get any worse than what a milatary tribunal would normally give. (Hanging, Firing Squad)

He's going to die, that's enough. Anything worse crosses the line between justice, and vengeance.

Put his head on a stick and run it throughout the country like the Olympic torch.

What's funny is that what you're saying about Osama, people in the Arab world want to do to Bush. Once again, killing him in an overly brutal fashion AND doing it in public isn't just. For those who say POWs are treated differently, show me where it says we can publicly execute a POW and I'll gladly endorse it. For now, doing it in such a barbaric fashion lowers us to their level. Fuck the prisons. Kill him until he dies from it I agree, just find a better way to do it that doesn't sound like some cartoonishly absurd Reign of Terror reminiscent idea.

So?

So we're better than that.

As much as I might want him to die in a very brutal, very slow, and very public fashion, that's now how justice is done in America. We don't torture people or inflict cruel and unusual punishment, even to subhuman pieces of shit like Usama bin Laden. Sometimes, being the good guy is difficult.

Well, if we can't savagely murder Osama...

We can pull the 24 treatment and pretend to kill his kids before his eyes before we kill him...except we actually kill his kids instead of using slick video editing. I can't imagine much worse than watching your kids die. Then kill him.

Just lock him up in a high security New York prison.

 And then maybe we can parol him.

Actually that might be a good idea. The inmates might caue him to have a painful and brutal death while the guards are "busy."

That's not fair. No one mentioned a guillotine.
