Now They've Gone Too Far

Those cutting remarks Canadian leaders have been making about their American counterparts seem to have taken their toll.

After the prime minister's press secretary referred to George W. Bush as a moron and Liberal MP Carolyn Parrish referred to his entire electorate as "those bastards," Americans are fighting back.

They have attacked curling.

The sports pages of the Los Angeles Times ran a photo last Monday from the Brier, which ended yesterday in Halifax. The photo caption, after providing some routine information, went on to add: "No reason was given as to why people are in the stands watching."

Houston Mitchell, the copy editor at the Times who wrote the caption, said a number of letters have arrived on his desk from curling fans.

"I got some letters from people who thought I was making fun of the fact that there were actually people there because no one watches curling," said Mr. Mitchell, who wished to set the record straight.

"I know people watch curling. I just couldn't believe people were there because it's so boring. That's what I was making fun of," he said.

Canadians shouldn't take it personally, he added. "If it was any other boring sport, I would have written the exact same thing," Mr. Mitchell said.

Dale Ness, a member of the Quebec team and one of the curlers in the photo, said yesterday he has become accustomed to Americans' slowness to embrace the sport.

What does he say to people like Mr. Mitchell?

"It depends on how much I've had to drink," Mr. Ness said.

He was not bothered, though.

"If they had a good chuckle, that's good," he said.

Do we need UN sanctions to invade Los Angeles?

Curling: Just like a sport, without all that annoying entertainment.

Seriously, I'm taking names and going down to the UN as soon as I get enough.

What is it with Canadians? First they come to America to be our janitors and sweep our floors, then they create a sport based around sweeping. Don't Canadians have talent in anything?

I'm already on TC's list.

Never watched curling, never had the desire to. If I understand correctly, your teammate rolls a rock down some ice and you sweep in front of the rock?

Wow, sign me up! [/sarcasm]

Steroids, eh? Nah. Not all Americans are jacked up lugs. Just the ones that are on TV.

Come on. If you had a skill that there was no practical use for (Sweeping in front of a rock) would you ignore it, or would you find a group of fellow losers who share your passion? I say kudos to Canada for taking the initiative.

What the hell, I'm already on the list for a year now, might as well get my money's worth.

Curling is more than just 'throw a rock and sweep in front of it'. I can understand why people find it boring, because, well, a lot of the time it is, but it has this strange allure to it that I can't explain.

Well, sort of, I guess. There is some strategy to curling. You need to know how the ice and how much it is curling so you know where to throw the rock in order for it to end up where you want it.

I'm no expert on it, but it's more challenging than it looks.

I miss playing hockey. Sadly, there's no ice here in Florida.

I fucking hate the LA Times!!!Whenever the Lakers lose, they will only have about a quarter of a page of coverage. Yet, when they win it like a 2 full page spread on the game!

And I can't tell you the last time the Clippers made the front page. It's like they're not even a local team.

Fuck the Lakers and the LA Times.

Does Curling have any trash talking players or any Bobby Knight like coaches.

I'd watch Olympic Zamboni racing.

I think I'd be more interested in freestyle zamboni driving exhibitions.

Here's the universal question: Exactly what in the fucking hell is curling anyway?

Wow...

That looked pretty boring. Sounds like the Canadian version of golf...
