Guest Kibagami Report post Posted March 12, 2003 I just saw the American Hi-Fi video for a song called "The Art Of Losing". I want to say it's the lamest thing ever, but I'm afraid that if I say that, Simple Plan or Good Charlotte or some other whiny piece of shit wish-we-were-punk "band" will release something that much worse. My question is this. Who is buying these shitty albums? Who is going to these shows I cannot begin to fathom? Who the fuck enjoying this pussified bitchfests that get labeled anthems because they all include the line "I don't want to be like you"? I can't stand this shit anymore, and I simply have to vent someplace. Really, guys. What the fuck? K.
Guest Edwin MacPhisto Report post Posted March 12, 2003 Deformed people. Like, kids with flippers. They don't know any better. They've got flippers.
Guest Kibagami Report post Posted March 12, 2003 What if we taped mixtapes to their flippers? Mixtapes with The Pilfers and The Flaming Lips and Catch-22 and El-P?? Mixtapes with things that don't suck when you hear them? We could SAVE the children! And their flippers! K.

I can't stand this shit anymore, and I simply have to vent someplace. Really, guys. What the fuck? K. After that rant, did you actually want someone to answer your question? For the record, American Hi-Fi is one of my guilty pleasure bands. I just find it to be fun music to listen to, and I would go as far as to say that I hate Blink 182 and the like. While "The Art of Losing" is a generic song, the rest of their stuff shows a rockier edge. I wouldn't lump them into the same categorie as Blink and their ilk, but I can see why people would. Short answer: people aren't always looking for music that moves them. Sometimes they just want to have something fun to listen to once in a while. For the people who listen to only these bands, I have no answer. I listen to a wide range of stuff, so I have no experience with limiting oneself to only one genre. Guest hardyz1 Report post Posted March 12, 2003 Hey, Good Charlotte's new song has this lyric in it: "Shake it once, that's fine. Shake it twice, that's OK. Shake it three times, you're playing with yourself." Genius, I say. Or not.
Guest EricMM Report post Posted March 12, 2003 The Art of Losing is my new worst enemy. Anyone who writes lyrics which are something like 1-2-Fuck you I don't wanna be like you needs to realize they're not cool. Flavor of the week was a MUCH better song, and it wasn't that good anyways. I just loathe that single.

Guest FeArHaVoC Report post Posted March 12, 2003 and all the "poser" Radio DJ's out there who want to be cool and play the new "Hip" stuff and act like they discovered it.
Guest Eyeball Kid Report post Posted March 12, 2003 I can longer get mad about shitty music. Shitty music will always be around and in style, so hating it is a waste of energy. I find it better to pretend it's not there, which I accomplish by not listening to the radio or watching tv.
Guest Plushy Al Logan Report post Posted March 12, 2003 Classic "poser" albums are good. I know alot of people with Metallica's "Black Album." Korn albums also fit into that category, along with Tupac albums. I can't think of any more, but I know two huge rap posers, everything Korn, and Shit Biscuit. Guest Eyeball Kid Report post Posted March 12, 2003 For the would-be indie hipster, Beck and Radiohead are namedropped far too often. I have nothing agaist either act--well, I like Radiohead and dislike Beck--but saying you listen to two commercially successful outfits won't win you indie street cred, regardless of how off the wall said acts seem. And why the hell would anyone want indie cred? Man, I hate most indie people, even if we share a common bond musically.

I mean I didn't even know American Hi-Fi had a new single or album until this thread.
Guest LooseCannon Report post Posted March 12, 2003 Yeah, I agree with everything Inc's said in this thread so far. I hate the term "hipster" though. And I would look at anyone funny who listened to a bunch of garbage, and then namedropped Radiohead to try and earn my respect. Whether that makes me as bad as them, I don't know. Good Charlotte and their ilk is just what you get when a sub-cultural ethos gets commodified. It happens all the time.

Guest Banky Report post Posted March 12, 2003 Radiohead is overated tripe. Replace "Radiohead" with "Beastie Boys," and yeah. ........I could do that. But I won't. Give me a call when radiohead return to its 'The Bends' and 'OK Computer' phase. Maybe I'll revise then.
Guest Edwin MacPhisto Report post Posted March 12, 2003 Supposedly the new album is supposed to "rock," says the band. So was the case for Amnesiac, though, which really turned out to be mostly Kid A leftovers. Who knows. Man, I remember back in the day, when I was angsty and 14, I was all Nine Inch Nails and such. At least that was about hating God and killing things, which is a lot cooler than any pap Good Charlotte & co. can dribble out.
Guest saturnmark4life Report post Posted March 13, 2003 IT shouldn't get me mad. It'll be gone within a year. But I am on the fucking edge, mainly cos I know I can do better. And I will. One day.
Guest SP-1 Report post Posted March 13, 2003 I know that for me it's similar to Raptor's comments. Bands like Good Charlotte and American Hi-Fi serve a purpose of background music for me. Static guitar and drum beat sometimes and I'll sing along if the word flow is at least technically passable. I neither love nor loathe. Different songs from different genres serve their own purposes for me so I have a wide range of what I listen to. I can listen to the one damn Costello song I am in possession of (a condition I shall remedy soon) and just as easily switch over and listen to Veruca Salt or El Tango De Roxanne. Guest justsoyouknow Report post Posted March 14, 2003 What's wrong with liking Nine Inch Nails? It's actual music, as opposed to Good Charlotte and American Hi-Fi. The mere fact that you lump them into the same category, sir, upsets me to no end. ...."We're in This Together Now" is a prime example of art in it's purest form. Guest snuffbox Report post Posted March 14, 2003 Who gives a shit? Is there really any harm in GC or the All American Rejects or Simple Plan etc etc? Give it a bloody break. I tolerate and even enjoy some of this and Im a 'recovering metal elitist'.
Guest razazteca Report post Posted March 14, 2003 Good Charlotte and their ilk is just what you get when a sub-cultural ethos gets commodified. It happens all the time. It happens to all genres of music, hair bands had Poison, Rap currently has Ja Rule, the same thing is happening to punk as it goes pop.

The mere fact that you lump them into the same category, sir, upsets me to no end. Yeah, Corey's got me covered. I still listen to these albums and The Downward Spiral in particular has a warm place (rimshot!) in my heart. I think that album's one of the most cohesively produced released in the 90's, and love that, even though the lyrics seem very frequently juvenile from my current perspective, that the music itself draws emotions and feelings out whether you care about the words or not. Bottom line, I'll take Trent Reznor over punk pop anyday, cause even at his lowest moments he sounds pretty interesting.
