Guest Army Eye Report post Posted March 12, 2003 The first match on the show was a dark match between Kanyon (who is now boyfriend to Jackie Gayda--Kanyon's gimmick is that he talks with a lisp, he doesn't to know it) and Shark Boy. Shark Boy was very, very over. Lots of chants of 'we want shark boy' all show. Kanyon won a good match. This is not the first time they have made Kanyon's lisp a focus of a storyline. Now his character's whole reason for being is to speak with a lisp. No doubt they will have him exaggerate it too. WHY are they so fixated on this guy's lisp? Does this sound like a really bad gimmick to anyone else? It's the kind of thing that amuses the writers but won't get anyone over at all (like Goldust having Tourette's)
Guest D'Lo White Report post Posted March 12, 2003 The lisp gimmick is really stupid, but he has Jackie Gayda as a valet. That's even worst. I was hoping to never she her on my TV ever again.
Guest oldschoolwrestling Report post Posted March 12, 2003 They have now taken 2 over characters, Goldust and Kanyon, and made them circus clowns. Unfunny circus clowns.
Guest Spaceman Spiff Report post Posted March 12, 2003 Didn't Dustin come up w/ the Tourette's idea himself? Anyway, JR mentioned in his JR Report's that they were keeping Kanyon off TV until they could come up w/ a creative direction for him, and this is the best they could do? "Who are the ad wizards who came up w/ that one?"

Guest Spaceman Spiff Report post Posted March 12, 2003 Judging by some/most of the stuff that makes it on TV, I don't think WWE writers are the best judge of what is or is not funny.

Agreed, but if they're going to use her, better she's a valet than reprising her role as one of the worst wrestlers to ever live.
Guest Fook_Hing_Ho Report post Posted March 12, 2003 Hey, maybe when Lita comes back she can make fun of Kanyon's lisp again! Then Jackie Gayda can defend him and we can have the feud the world has been waiting for!
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted March 12, 2003 Has anyone actually seen Kanyon using the new "gimmick"? It may not be as bad as we think. Hopefully it's just a "gimmick" that has him talking naturally. Him talking normally and using his natural lisp in segments without knowing he lisps may not be that bad. But if it's an over the top gimmick that has him going out of his way to talk with an exxagerated lisp and then he feuds with someone for saying he lisps. Then it would be just as awful as we feared. Guest JHawk Report post Posted March 12, 2003 What exactly is wrong with the old gimmick? "WHO BETTA THAN KANYON?!?" Of course, that would require him winning on occasion, wouldn't it? WWE doesn't want talent winning matches
Guest evilhomer Report post Posted March 12, 2003 He could play the delusional heel who thinks he's great, but keeps on losing. But of course "Who bettah than Kanyon" isn't a WWEeeeee creation, so by default it sucks.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted March 12, 2003 Just bring back Chris "Champaign" Kanyon. He can say that he's the only real hollywood star in WWe.

Ahem--I was there, as I told everyone many times.. They didn't play it off as a gimmick. He just talked like he NORMALLY did anyway because he really has a lisp. He has "Who Betta?" on his tights and played the heel, and Gayda played a Nidia-like role. Made out HARD with him pre-match and tripped up Shark Boy during the match. However, it being his "gimmick?" Eh, I don't think so. I heard some one say that Kidman turned on Rey, which also didn't happen.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted March 12, 2003 Well...I never saw that you were in attendance so eeexcuuuse meee Well, then hopefully it was just a case of someone not being that familiar with Kanyon and mistakingly reporting that he had a lisping gimmick. Guest AndrewTS Report post Posted March 12, 2003 Heh--no problem. That's probably what the deal is. There was an "Alliance MVP" sign at ringside that Kanyon held up briefly before giving it back. Which reminded me of that gimmick some one proposed about him not knowing the Alliance is done with.
Guest subliminal_animal Report post Posted March 12, 2003 Didn't Dustin come up w/ the Tourette's idea himself? Someone has to say "Hey, that's not funny, stick with what you are doing" Nobody will say that because the "you are" makes it sound so awkward. It might trigger a fight or a (rasslin'!) riot, followed by massive layoffs stemming from said hoopla!
Guest AndrewTS Report post Posted March 12, 2003 The lisp gimmick is really stupid, but he has Jackie Gayda as a valet. That's even worst. I was hoping to never she her on my TV ever again. Well, thankfully she's just doing what she's suited to do--look slutty and cheat a little bit. She looked a little bit better than I remembered her, and she still got the big fat DSLs. Didn't Dustin come up w/ the Tourette's idea himself? Yeah--but that gimmick is totally pointless. He hasn't wrestled a match at all since then, and the segments he was in weren't entertaining at all. I suggest de-fib him back to normal and end the shitty gimmick already. Guest Steviekick Report post Posted March 12, 2003 They should redebut Kanyon as Positively Kanyon. He bought DDP's old image (hell, bring in DDP to sell it to him). Even if it leads to him having to put over Sara Undertaker, it's better than being known as the guy with the bad lisp.
Guest BobbyWhioux Report post Posted March 12, 2003 They should redebut Kanyon as Positively Kanyon. He bought DDP's old image (hell, bring in DDP to sell it to him). Even if it leads to him having to put over Sara Undertaker, it's better than being known as the guy with the bad lisp. I loved that gimmick. And, actually, I think they ought to revive it. But not based on DDP. He's not around anymore. But keep the spirit of it alive: i.e. base it on a big time WWE star who deserves to be ruthlessly parodied. Just imagine the comedy gold of Kanyon parodizing Triple H, for example, running around Pedigreeing random people, running to the nearest camera (regarless of how far away it is), and shouting "you're not in my league!" Hey, they could play it up as part of the "brand" rivalry: Smackdown dissing a Raw star. Hell, for the sake of continuity, it can even be Steph's idea of how to diss her (in character) ex-husband. Or perhaps you feel that Steve Austin or The Undertaker is more worthy of this lampooning? [The Stunner is so Diamond Cutter like in quickness of delivery and overness as a move, that might be the route to go.] What made Positively Kanyon work so well for me in the past was that I *HATED* DDP and was sick of him and embodied every aspect of facehood that I despised. It was like HBK 1996 all over again. Same schtick night in and night out, and it wasn't even a good schtick. So when Kanyon started making fun of it and such, and exposing how stupid DDP's schtick actually looked, I roared with approval. Great parody, probably the best parody I've ever seen in wrestling. Although the idea of Kanyon continuing on the Alliance's war would be funny, too...unfortunately, he'd have to refer to the "WWF" to be fully accurate, and they can't exactly do that anymore. Guest HartFan86 Report post Posted March 12, 2003 Positvely Kanyon was the fucking greatest gimmick ever. I was on the floor when they would show people randomly outside or in the parking lot, and Kanyon running out of nowhere and Kanyon Cutting them. Great shit. Astro101 0 Report post Posted March 12, 2003 Aw man, I loved it when Kanyon was across the arena and all of a sudden, disappeared off camera and then was right in my face with the BANG!
Garth 0 Report post Posted March 12, 2003 I think the idea of having him think the alliance still going would totally rule. Thers so much they could do with it as well.

Guest El Satanico Report post Posted March 12, 2003 Yeah Kanyon believing that The Alliance is still going on would be great.
Guest Steviekick Report post Posted March 12, 2003 Kanyon still thinking it was the Alliance era would be hysterical. Can you imagine the heartfelt conversation where he finds out it's over...and then asks if that still means that he's the MVP?

Guest AndrewTS Report post Posted March 13, 2003 The "Positively Kanyon" gimmick would work pretty well if he did it with Edge. Unfortunately, after a whole YEAR it would be as stale as Edge's character was.
Guest JMA Report post Posted March 13, 2003 I think Kanyon thinking the Alliance still going on would be lame. First off, it defies all logic. Second, I don't need to be reminded of that failed angle.
