Guest Eyeball Kid Report post Posted March 14, 2003 Yeah, this was one of their earliest DVD titles. Another company--the name of which escapes me--released their own version of it, but this is Criterion we're talking about.
Guest godthedog Report post Posted March 14, 2003 truffaut was a god till 1964, but i'm pretty happy with my fox lorber edition that only cost me $15. unless it's another '8 1/2' or 'contempt', i don't think i'll be picking this one up. now, if they released 'the 400 blows' with 'shoot the piano player' and 'jules & jim' in a 3-pack, i'd buy that INSTANTLY. i'd have to, cause once i pick it up to look at it, there's no way i'd ever let go of it again. Guest godthedog Report post Posted March 15, 2003 truffaut was a god till 1964 You telling me you don't admire "Stolen Kisses" or "Day for Night"? i've never seen a bad truffaut film, but after 'jules & jim' he seemed to lose all his ambition. the difference between 'jules & jim' and his next movie, 'the soft skin', is just startling. the latter looks flat & conventional, & doesn't have that breath of life--compared to one of the most energetic movies ever made, it seems lifeless. the rest of his career was kind of like that: good stuff, but slight and insignificant. he still brought this warmth and charm to his movies, and he still made good movies, but nothing came close to his first 3 features. those first 3 knocked me on my ass and were made by a god. movies like 'day for night' are fun and really cute, but they just lack that substance & inimitable style.
