Minor musing and notes regarding changes

Guest Jobber of the Week

Those of you on AngleSault's "The company is conspiring against Angle" bandwagon (that's right, both of you) may or may not find this amusing. The original footage for Angle/Lesnar didn't show the TV audience what was going on until after the pin. The UPN version shows the switcheroo from a camera way up in the nosebleeds. I watched the satelite version first Thursday afternoon and, having not spoiled myself on internet results, and nearly marked out of my skull until the replay. Either they changed their mind and decided to show the switch ahead of time, or decided they didn't want the audience to think Kurt could beat Brock even for 20 seconds. Your call.

Also, the match finish has a completely different set of commentary as Tazz/Cole wonders what's going on and goes on about Lesnar's hesitation after the F-5.

Video of the original finish (17.5MB Divx)

Unusually enough though, even the UPN version has that odd pause where Brock pins "Kurt" and then stops. He then looks around pretty lost. I'm guessing Team Angle forgot their run-in or something?

Nothing else really interesting that most people didn't see. The crowd "WHAT"ted Vince's onscreen promo about Hogan and that got removed in post-production (to clarify: The WHAT got removed, not the promo), there was a little promo with Team Angle before the main event to keep Kurt's heel heat strong ("This is my hometown? Everytime I come here people boo me. Whenever I hear that announcer say 'From Pittsburgh, P-A' I get sick to my freakin' stomach." "Can you name one accomplishment that isn't sports-related from Pittsburgh? Huh? Can You!? And Mr. Rogers doesn't count because he's dead!"), and the combination of Undertaker & Brock beat down pretty much every heel then torture Paul for a while.

Team Angle didn't forget there run-in. Brock got up and was wondering what the hell was going on, then he figured it out and was looking for Kurt. Look at the way he looks around the ring on towards the outside. He's trying to find Kurt. Then he sees Team Angle coming so he runs out there to stop them.

Yea, because you can hear someone shouting "Lesnar" or "Brock" and Brock's looking round trying to hear who's saying it.

I think they played it out that Brock saw that Kurt was actually Eric on the pin, and stopped and figured Kurt was gunna sneak up on him. At least that's what I think because Brock is looking distractly at Eric's face.

I just noticed something. Kurt Angle actually does come down to the ring for the match. That's actually him at the stage with the pyro, etc. When he kneels down by the turnbuckle and Brock's music plays, the lights go out and Eric (probably under the ring) goes in and changes with Kurt. The reason I think they did this was because so people could say that it was Kurt who was spinning around in the ring doing his traditional thing before his match (you know what I'm talking about.)

I thought Kurt was under the ring the whole time, but it must of been Eric.

Eric came out for the entrance, and after the F-5 the switch is made, because Brock noticed it wasn't Kurt. After Team Angle appear Kurt makes the switch and lies down, and when Brock comes in the ring he rolls him up by surprise.

I was there live and I'm pretty sure that's what happened, although I'll admit I'm not positive about it. I was seated over by the ramp.

I tried to play the clip, but it's stuck on the first frame, and yet the sound plays as normal. :(

the only thing i don't get is why Brock got up during the pin, he couldn't have noted it was Eric, because when he goes back to the ring later he's going to suplex him still thinking is Kurt.

Kurt came out for the entrance and they switched during Lesnar's intro btw.

Brock = stoopid.

He was still con-foozed.

I doubt you could see the switch made when Brock was coming out because the lights went out. Look again....I did it still by still when Angle was in the ring spinning around...they do a closeup and THAT is Kurt Angle...Kurt made the entrance, switched with Eric during Brock's entrance, then switched back.

OK here's my take on the events while rewatching the tape *channels Oliver Stone*:

The switch happened during Brock's entrance. The commentators mention the black eye Kurt has on his way down to the ring, they cut to a fairly close up, it's Kurt. Kurt enters the ring and does his spin and the hood falls down. Kurt put the hood back up and knelt in the corner until Brock's entrance started. Lights go down, Kurt and Eric (under the ring) switch. Brock comes in, beats up the hooded wrestler (Eric), F-5, goes for the pin and sees it's Eric. He then looks outside to find Kurt (thinking that he's going to try to jump him in the ring) and sees Team Angle. He goes to run off T & A 2003 and Kurt (under the ring) and Eric switch again. Brock re-enters the ring, rollup, seeya at Mania thanks for the pseudo-screwjob. Tazz and Mitchell even say "That WAS Kurt coming down to the ring" after the match. Anyway, I'm almost positive that was what happened, barring any editing by Mr. Dunn and his crew.

i still don't see the logic of Brock interrupting the pin and then coming back to attack Kurt again. it doesn't make sense

You probably need to download the latest DivX.

I think Brock should have spent a few seconds removing Eric's hood and staring at him instead of immediately popping up and looking around for the real Kurt. It made no sense the way it aired since he didn't seem to get more than a quick glance (if that) at Eric's face during the "match".

I dl'd the latest DivX, and it played fine, thought I had to use WMP, as the DivX player wouldn't play sound.

What I don't get is when the switch happened, right in front of Tazz and Cole, they ignore the switch. When the reply shows the switch happening, they talk like they never saw the switch happening, yet it happened right in front of their eyes.

most of the time the announcers talk about what they're seeing in their little monitors, so they commentate on the stuff thet people is watching on their TVs i guess...

Yeah, the only logical thing for Brock to do would be to just pin Eric and leave with the belt.

Now that you mention it, that sounds right. Conspiracy Victim probably has it right. There were actually TWO switches. One while the lights went out, the second one while Team Angle was run off by Brock.

I think that's why there was a completely different set of commentary on UPN. One where Cole kept shouting "That's not really Kurt Angle!"

And if they switched while Donkey Kong was making his big old entrance then what was the point of shaving Eric's head and everything? For that matter, why didn't Lesnar see it when he was actually making his entrance? You guys act like they sat there and switched positions while he was the HappyDance.

I don't know why there would be any doubt that there were two switches.

I mean Kurt did drop the hood and show who he was.

Yeah, the only logical thing for Brock to do would be to just pin Eric and leave with the belt.

But then Jack Tunney would come out, strip Brock of the title, and set up a 14 man tornament at WrestleMania, giving Angle and Brock first round buys.
