Ricky Davis: robbed of a triple-double

Recommended Posts

Guest Redhawk

If you saw Sportscenter last night you saw it. With six seconds left and his team beating the Jazz by 20-something points, Cleveland Cavs star Ricky Davis was one rebound shy of a triple-double. The Cavs had the ball on the Jazz' end. So Davis took the inbounds, went for a layup on the Jazz' basket, missed it on purpose and got the ball. Shortly after, Jazz guard DeShawn Stevenson pushed Davis pretty hard, drawing a foul. Davis wasn't credited with a rebound.

Now, sure, it was a punkish move on Davis' part. But why wasn't he given credit for the rebound? A shot was thrown up, Davis got the ball after it missed: Isn't that a rebound? Can someone better explain the rule to me?

And if you've forgot, Anthony Bowie was the former Orlando Magic guard who, standing one rebound and one assist shy of a triple double and his team up by 20-something, got a rebound and quickly called timeout with like 4 seconds left. The other team (Detroit) refused to take the court as Bowie inbounded it to a teammate under the hoop for his 10th assist and his only career triple double.

i think he should have been pushed for what he did. I mean whatever happened to there's no "I" in team.

Playing for the CAVS, you would think that he would be ecstatic over a win.

According to Rule 5 section 1e:

It is a violation for a player to attempt a field goal at an opponent's basket. The opposing team will be awarded the bal (sic) at the free throw line extended.

Basically it means that you cannot intentionally attempt an own goal, which is what Davis tried to do, and since he did, no rebound was awarded and the Cavs would have turned the ball over.

And Bowie was lucky that he wasn't around during the Bad Boy era. He'd have gotten the shit beat out of him for pulling that stunt.

What Ricky Davis did was very selfish. It shows that Davis only cares about his stats being padded. I think Stevenson was just in shoving Davis. It just goes to show me that as long the Cav's have selfish players who don't know how to win, then they will continually to be the joke of the NBA.

I thought that was one of the dumbest things I've ever seen. I do seem to remember a long time ago seeing an old tape of a guy on the 76ers who got a pay bonus if he had a certain number of rebounds. So one game he gets out on a breakaway with no one around and instead of dunking it he parked under the basket and threw like 8 shots off the bottom of the rim and then once everyone caught up to him he dunked it. He got credited for a whole lot of offensive rebounds.

Moses Malone used to do that all of the time to pad his rebound stats.

I just saw this. That what was the stupidest thing I've ever seen in basketball and there's a lot of stupid stuff there. I can't believe that foul either. He should've Kermit Washingtoned him.

Well the refs missed it then, because they called a foul on Stevenson and Davis shot two free throws to end the game. Not like it mattered or anything, but the violation was never called.

Well, there's a reason they never win. There are ZERO veterans on the team. The most tenured player is Zydrunas Ilgauskas. Other than Z and Carlos Boozer, the entire team needs an enema. No one hustles, no one contributes, and NO ONE gives a damn! It's pathetic watching this team night after night, but at the same time I think their games should be on Comedy Central.

They called a foul because he fouled him. It had nothing to do with the shot. The foul was like 10 seconds after he already got the rebound. The shot had nothing to do with the foul or the foul shots. He got foul shots because the Jazz were in the penalty by then.

I'm saying that they should have called the "can't shoot at the other hoop" violation BEFORE the foul ever happened. In those 10 second you were talking about.

Well, you're absolutely right on that point. They probably realized the violation when the game was over and took away the rebound then...

I think the Jazz players should have ganged up and kicked the shit out of him. Stupid me-me-me shit like that is a lot of what's wrong with American sports these days. Guys are worried about padding their stats and looking good for their "posse" than actually playing the game the right way and trying to win as many games as possible.

This was against the Jazz? He should have had one of Karl Malone's big ol' beefy elbows firmly inserted into his brain via a crushing of the nasal cavaity.

Exactly. I think everybody there probably had the same feeling I had seeing it on replay, total shock. They probably didn't even think about the rules at the point, they were just trying to figure out what they hell they just saw.

The Cavs fined him today, but they didn't say how much.

I don't see what's SO bad about going for out stats, especially in a blowout game. Now I understand if it were a close game and Davis did that, but how many times do players stay in the game longer than they have to just to pad the stats? Wilt Chamblerlain didn't score his 100 points "in the flow of the game." They were actively trying to get him points in a game that was long over with. And Cal Ripken could have (and probably should have) taken a day or two off during his streak. But he was going for the streak.

And funny it should happen against the Jazz, because the only reason Karl Malone is even playing anymore is so he can break the all-time scoring record.

It probably falls into the category of "not paying your dues", I guess...

It was wrong, but I would've done it anyway. I would try anything to get out of playing for the Cavs. The Cavs organization are hypocritical for giving Davis a fine when they're trying to tank games to get the 1st Pick.

That should probably read "get a better shot at the 1st pick"...

They never gave him the rebound to begin with. Cavs radio announcer of 30+ years, Joe Tait actually had a chuckle over the idiot clown Ricky Davis' "rebound."

He had that tone as if to say, "You'd think at a 12-54 record, we can just leave well enough alone with a hard-earned victory over a superior team, BUT of course not . . ."

It's funny because all season long in Cleveland, the commercials for The Cavs end in a jingle saying,

"This is Cleveland,

This is our team, this is our town

And I'm proud to say, HEY!"

Someone find me a hole to crawl into. Oh, I can just go into the Gund Arena, NO ONE would find me there.

Thats nothing you should've heard the Chicago Bulls slogan last year: Where they ask people on the street "Why Bulls Tickets" and the people would answer: To see Iverson, Kobe, Shaq, and for the Entertainment. Nothing about the team or its own players.
