Guest TheMikeSC Report post Posted March 17, 2003 "And significantly, Mr. Speaker, in all the discussions in the Security Council and outside, no one -- no one -- has claimed that Iraq is in full compliance with the obligations placed upon it. Given this, it was my belief up to about a week ago that we were close to achieving the consensus which we sought on the further resolution. Sadly, Mr. Speaker, one country then ensured that Security Council could not act. President Chirac's unequivocable announcement Monday last that France would veto a second resolution containing this or any ultimatum whatever the circumstances inevitably created a sense of paralysis in our negotiations. And I deeply regret that France has thereby put to a Security Council consensus beyond reach." Just try and keep this in mind when griping about the U.S refusing diplomacy. -=Mike

Guest TheMikeSC Report post Posted March 17, 2003 Did the US even have a majority of votes in the SC anyways? According to the British, we EASILY had a monumental majority. -=Mike
Rob E Dangerously 0 Report post Posted March 18, 2003 I guess we'd never know now? You'd figure that if the margin in a vote was 11-4, 12-3, 13-2, that the vetos would in-turn, turn more people against the French/Russian side. But, if the vote turned out to be 8-7 against or worse, then the vetos are irrelevant and the US doesn't look any better. It's pretty much just speculation when it comes to the vote total. In closing, vote happens, we win big (as you claim), then the French and Russia look bad for vetoing, giving more support to the US. Vote happens, we lose, the US looks damned bad. Of course, now it is, Vote not happening, US withdraws resolution, just assume that we had six other nations with us. Bombs away!
Guest DrTom Report post Posted March 18, 2003 The British said we had enough votes easily, but when it became obvious that France would veto whatever was put before it, we decided it wasn't worth it. And it's not. The UN will be exposed as an irrelevant sham that does nothing around the world if it's not riding on the back of America.
