Spider-Man 2 may go on without star Tobey Maguire. Maguire is suffering from a bad back. Actor Jake Gyllenhaal (Moonlight Mile) is waiting in the wings to replace Maguire in the highly anticipated sequel.

Gyllenhaal happens to be dating Kirsten Dunst, another of Spider-Man's stars.

"After doing two physically demanding films in a row, Tobey has experienced mild discomfort in his back, which is in the final stages of healing," Maguire's spokeswoman says in a statement, Variety reports. "With an April 12 start date around the corner, everyone involved wants to be certain he is able to do the intense stunts."

The other physically demanding film that Maguire has been working on is Seabiscuit, a film where Maguire plays a racehorse jockey.

Maguire would get $17 million for reprising his role in Spider-Man 2, $4 million more than what he got for the original.

that's great. Gyllenhaal is way better than McGuire, IMO.

It would be kindof weird...like in Family Matters when the mom mysteriously changed actresses in the last few seasons.

I don't like it...I really liked TObey as Spiderman, he played Peter Parker really good

it's no weirder than the Batman actors changing or the Bond actors changing

But I'd hope Spiderman wouldn't start sucking hard after the first film like Batman did.

I hope Tobey can make it. I like continuity like that, AND I honestly prefer him in the role. He WAS Peter Parker/Spider-Man to me.

I REALLY hope McGuire isn't replaced. I hate it when sequels have differant actors in the same roles.

Jake is cool and all..I can say that without even seeing "Donnie Darko" but making Spider Man 2 without Tobey is like making Return of the Jedi without Harrison Ford..or something.

Just have Shawn Michaels show Tobey the beauty of painkillers.

He's the best chose to replace Toby, but it still suck balls.

BOO!

I want Tobey to come back, cause I like when the same actors come back to do the movies again.

However, if Tobey doesn't do the movie, I wouldn't mind seeing Gyllenhaal play Spidey. He was great in Donnie Darko (which is the only movie I've seen him in).

Eh, I'm torn.

I like continuity, but Gyllenhaal was good in "The Good Girl" with Aniston.

I could live with this.

Continuity is great and all, but if Maguire isn't capable of doing it then there's nothing that can be done. I'd just be glad to see them replace Maguire with someone decent.

I like Jake Gyllenhaal and all, but I thought Maguire was GREAT in the dual role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man. If he's not ready to go on April 12, they could always start shooting without him. I'm sure there are some scenes that have neither Peter Parker nor Spider-Man in them. They should be able to resolve this without having to bring in a different actor.

They could also use a body double for the heavier stunt scenes... especially if he's in the Spidey suit.

Maguire (Not McGuire) is better than Gyllenhaal. I thought he brought a real human edge to Spider-Man. Sort of what Christopher Reeve did for Superman.

But... on second thought. Maybe they should change actors. I think they should call it "The Spider-Man Connection" and they should have Hulk Hogan star as Spider-Man!

"With great power, comes great responsibility, brother!"

That blows. On one hand, it's good for Maguire in that it would be very hard to top the first film so if the movie doesn't live up to expectations - he won't be effected by it. On the other hand, it's bad for me because every Batman after Michael Keaton blew...

Bond is different because the franchise has been around for nearly 40 years and the movies have maintained their popularity despite the different lead actors. Name another film franchise where that has been the case.

Absolutely.

Actually, I think Reeve's excellent portrayal of Clark Kent was more important than the human edge he brought to Superman. IMO, it's more important to nail the "secret identity" part of the dual role, since that's the part that the audience will relate to. I can't identify with someone swinging on webs and tossing cars around, but I CAN identify with someone who endures a lot of pain in his life and has a lot of angst as a result.

I liked Bubbleboy...

I heard on Headline News today that Tobey signed a contract for the movie and it will start filming next month.

I think Jake is just as, if not more, capable of bringing that human edge to Peter Parker. Again, see: Darko, Donnie I can't think of one thing that Maguire brings to Parker/Spidey that only he can and Gyllenhaal can not. Plus, Gyllenhaal's got the hot sister.

And I never knew that Dr. Tom was such a tortured soul.

Dammit, I was hoping they'd replace him with Dolph Lundren

YOU DON'T KNOW MY PAIN~!

Ahem.

I never saw Donnie Darko, so I can't comment on Jake's turn in that. He was good in The Good Girl, though, which was a lame and pedestrian movie despite some good performances.

Toby better be doing Spider-Man 2.. I was blown away by his excellent performance as Peter Parker... Spider-man is still my favorie superhero movie...

On the bright side, since Gyllenhaal is dating Dunst, there will be a good chemistry between them on screen.

On the other hand, I want Tobey back. I don't mind new people taking over the hero role ala Batman, but don't do it the second film in.

Um...it's pretty much been reported that Tobey HAS SIGNED ON to do #2...yet, I say again.

Hollywood hunk Tobey Maguire assures fans he's definitely reprising his role as Spider-Man. Reports emerged on Tuesday that a bad back sustained from his role as a jockey in upcoming movie Seabiscuit had put his return as the webslinging superhero in doubt. Donnie Darko hunk Jake Gyllenhaal was also reported to be up as a replacement for the role, which would allow him to appear on-screen alongside his real-life girlfriend Kirsten Dunst. But Gyllenhaal has never been offered the role, and Maguire never had intentions of pulling out of the project. The doubts over Maguire's return came after his publicist Kelly Bush expressed concerns about the strength of the actor's back. But it was never stated that Maguire would not reprise his role. Maguire, 27, is repeating his routine of yoga, weight training and bulking up to once more transform for the role which this time will earn him $17 million - four times more than what he earned for the original, which became the biggest box office smash of 2002. The Amazing Spider-Man, which is set for a May 2004 release, will begin filming next month.

hey, Spike, I'll give you $1 if you NEVER say 'hunk' again

I agree with Dr Tom about nailing the secret identity. After watching Daredevil, the one lasting image that I have is Matt Murdock taking his weary body to sleep after a long day.
