Guest NoCalMike Report post Posted March 20, 2003 I mean, hell I aint complaining and I am happy that they can, however Pantera gets radio play with "walk" and "this love" and Slayer has never been played on the radio here besides the underground college "free speech" stations that hardly anyone listens too. Is it just off their name value and reputation? How to do the young kinds keep finding out about them? I guess us "older"(young 20's hahaha) guys are keeping the exposure out there. Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted March 20, 2003 I think the key is that they're both incredibly good live bands.
Guest swan Report post Posted March 20, 2003 Ever seen them live? Even bands like Rush, Grateful Dead, and even the Rolling Stones never sold a lot of records, but boy they pack 'em in wherever they play.
Guest saturnmark4life Report post Posted March 20, 2003 It just shows all is not lost. You can make money with talent and LOUD amps alone. NOFX are another example.
Guest Dace59 Report post Posted March 20, 2003 (edited) There's the internet thing, and that there's paper advertisng (Venues will put up lists of up coming gigs they host). Classic word of mouth too. Edited March 20, 2003 by Dace59
Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted March 20, 2003 Slayer and Pantera gets played on radio here, after around 10 at night...Sometimes it depends on the DJ, that might spin some good ol' metal during the lunch/supper time (Its great hearing Raining Blood around 6 pm). At Copps Colesium, it wasn't totally sold out, but the majority of the building was packed.
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Report post Posted March 21, 2003 When a band's been together for roughly 20 years, people know about them. People can be fans. A band's fanbase usually does one thing: increase. It also helps when more popular bands list aforementioned older bands as influences. That has been the case for why shows involving Slayer (Slipknot credits them as a huge influence) and The Misfits (Metallica used to whore the hell out of them as influences) are guaranteed to attract a rather large audience (compared to the popularity of said bands). It also helps when the band kicks a whole lot of ass.

Guest The Metal Maniac Report post Posted March 21, 2003 That, and people can get hooked on the more popular, well-known heavy bands (Like Metallica and such) and then go from there. Like, I myself got into Metallica, and from that I got into Pantera, and from that I got into Anthrax and so on.
Guest razazteca Report post Posted March 21, 2003 Headbangers Ball used to be the place for metal videos, but now the All Things Rock show just seems to play only pop punk or Audio Slave.
Guest converge241 Report post Posted March 21, 2003 they have an undying fan base the last time i saw Slayer they werent great live but most people seem to think they are and Pantera always put on one of the best live shows (101 proof is the only album that sounds just like the concert experience)
Guest kingkamala Report post Posted March 21, 2003 For the record Slayer usually plays 2000-3000 seat venues not arenas. Pantera almost always plays the nearby 5000 seat arena when they are nearby not the main 8000 seat arena. Maybe it's just my area though.

I saw Slayer/Pantera Extreme Steel Tour in the Compaq center in San Jose, and that place was pretty packed. The Floor and the seats.
Guest Bloodice Report post Posted March 22, 2003 Well they might not get much radio exposure but I know on the dish they're always on digital music, or their videos are shown especially a lot of panteras on mtv extreme which most people don't get unless they have dish, or digital cable in the southern illinois/st. louis area. That and as stated by many people above me, bands like that just pack the house no matter what exposure they do or don't get.

Even bands like Rush, Grateful Dead, and even the Rolling Stones never sold a lot of records, but boy they pack 'em in wherever they play. Sorry dude, no offense, but the Rolling Stones are right up their with the top album selling acts ever. Beatles, Michael Jackson, Garth Brooks, the Eagles, Elvis - those are the only ones I can think of that MIGHT be ahead of them. They've been going strong in one form another for years and years. Rush and Gratefull Dead have sold millions of albums, but yes they didn't have that many top ten singles. It's all about word of mouth and the internet has really intensified this. If the interent didn't exist I wouldn't have any idea that Anthrax have a new album coming out and are going on tour.
