Since I'm bored like shit, I thought it'd be funny to pick a movie for any category and comment it. Please, don't waste energy and transform this is one of thos Q&A threads where you just answer a specific questin. EXPLAIN your pick!

 

Best Music Movie - The Doors

Kilmer is great in his impersonation of Morrison and this, I think, is perhaps the best Oliver Stone movie EVER. The soundtracks rules, even in those parts where it's actually Val the singer. I could have done without Whaley (who seems stuck into every Stone movie I see in the perennial dumb jock guy role). Go take a look at the scene were Morrison dances with indians while singing Not To Touch The Earth. That's gonna give you gooseskins.

 

Best Gangster/mafia movie - Carlitos' Way

Yeah, I know it's usualli The Godfather or Goodfellas, but Al Pacino's personification in this one is truly one of the best of his careers. When you get a movie with Sean penn you expect a clusterfuck with a few good spots, but this really surpass expectation. A great movie.

 

Best "lost generation" movie - tie between Figh Club and Taxi Driver

 

On one side you've got Taxi Driver, one of the first "fuck the world" flicks ever produced. DeNiro's best role ever (besides raging bull). You follow Bickle through his #### to the end of the movie where he's apparently satisfied.

Then you got Fight Club, the movie of the 90s in my estimation. But I consider the strong point to be the end of the film. When you'll see it you won't believe your eyes for how the whole movie was projected around the very end of it.

 

Best sentimental movie - Buffalo'66

 

I cried at the end. Enough said.

 

Best sport movie - Any given sunday

 

another stone movie. It represents well football on and off the field.

 

Best horror movie - The Exorcist/Blair witch

 

Blair can scare your without even the hint of blood while exorcist... well, the little girl masturbates with a crucifix, enough said!!!

Best martial arts film:"Fist of legend"- I'm a big Jet Li fan(mostly his older stuff) and this is my favorite movie of his I've seen. I do need to catch up on the "Once upon a time in China" series.

 

Best Horror movie: The shining-I love the atmosphere of it, truly creepy.  

 

Best war movie:"The deer hunter"- even though the war-time scenes are limited, it's great movie. The russian roulette scene was intense.

 

Best kids movie: "The neverending story"- When I was a kid  I watched this movie all the time.

 

Best mob movie:"The Godfather"- I loved DeNiro as always and also liked this movie better than the sequel even though that was great too.

Best War Movie: Apocalypse Now REDUX

The 53 minutes added to what already was (IMO) the best war film ever adds an additional level of depth, and strengthens the mood, also adding some touches of dark humour.

 

Best Action Movie: Escape from New York

I wasn't quite sure if I would count this as a pure action film, but who cares? Great atmosphere, awesome score, Snake Plissken rules, Carpenter is god.

 

Best Horror Movie: Suspiria

OK, Argento is also god. Argento uses striking visuals, baroque production design and one of the best musical scores in the history of cinema to create a truly unique cinematic experience. The story is a bit silly (though the paralells to Alice in Wonderland are quite fun), but the true greatness in the film lies in the way Argento tells it.

 

Best Epic: Tie: Fitzcarraldo & Ran

Fitzcarraldo first. Fitzcarraldo is a Werner Herzog film. That about says it. Okay, this can be seen as sort of an opposite of his masterpiece Aguirre - the Wrath of God, as the title characters and their quests on the surface has many things in common (they are also both played by the phenomenal Klaus Kinski), and this also goes for the films. Aguirre is dark and disturbing, while Fitzcarraldo (the character) is a more benevolent incarnation. Herzog tells the tale with usual striking (and unforgettable) imagery, the film also (like Aguirre) features a beautiful score by german band Popol Vuh.

 

Now Ran. Based on Shakespeare's King Lear, Kurosawa has created one of the most emotionally powerful films I have ever witnessed.

This isn't really an adaption of the play as it is an interpretation, but Kurosawa manages to capture the essence of the play, in a way that the loss of Shakespeare's language doesn't matter. Kurosawa tells his tale with unforgettable images and his ever present introspection into the human psyche. Kurosawa is IMO arguably the greatest filmmaker who ever lived. But this wasn't actually Kurosawa's finest Shakespeare film.

 

Best Shakespeare Movie: Throne of Blood

That honor goes to Throne of Blood, Kurosawa's adaption of Macbeth. As with Ran, Kurosawa brings out the essence of the play, and most of the praise I gave Ran can also be given to Throne of Blood.

 

Best Sci-Fi: Blade Runner - the Director's Cut

Ridley Scott's bleak view into the future remains a truly astonishing film about the very essence of humanity. Words cannot describe how superior the director's cut is to the studio cut. The director's cut has a superior depth in both the characterization as well as in the narrative. And the ending is one of my all-time favorites.

 

Best Comic Book Movie: Flash Gordon

Stop laughing, I love this movie. It's got this playful, self-conscious tone, in which it is aware of what it is and has fun with itself (this is especially evident in the overall design of the film, and Queen's musical score). Plus, it's probably the only film, that no matter how many times I see it, by the end I'm nearly jumping up and down in my chair with glee.

EDIT: I totally forgot the Seven Samurai, which should rightfully top the epic category, but I'm too lazy to change it.

Doom generation. Id also put it as sentimental for the last scene.

Sports-

Any Given Sunday. Visually and content wise really summed up football

Horror-

Blair Witch. I was always a fan of the psychological horror (what you dont see). As a kid this was all stuff that i had nightmares of.. a house in the middle of the woods freaked me out

Money(or greed/stocks)-

too hard to pick so a tie: Wall Street/Boiler Room/Glengarry Glen Ross. A trinity if there ever was one

War-

the first half of Full Metal Jacket

SciFi-

Event Horizon (more like sci fi horror, but im not a big sci-fi fan)

Action-

Die Hard changed action movies forever.

Okay, Doomsault, in a way, none of the Evil Dead films were zombie movies except for Army Of Darkness, because the Deadites were possessed people (in the first one). Okay, Evil Dead II is borderline zombie movie, but it has more to do with demonology than zombies. HOWEVER, all 3 films kick ass in every which way. Campbell is one of those actors with "IT" that so many critics seem to just pass over all the time...like Edward Norton and Jason Lee.

 

Best Music Movie - This Is Spinal Tap!

If you've seen it, you know why I chose it. If you haven't seen it...WHERE THE HELL HAVE YOU BEEN FOR THE PAST 20 YEARS?!

 

Best Gangster/mafia movie  - Mafia!

I don't like movies based on the mafia/mob/whatever. Not my thing. This film parodied every single mobster movie and did it well.

 

Best "lost generation" movie - Dazed & Confused

Really, the kids of the 70's are the epitome of a lost generation. I don't count any Generation-X movies, as they were just lazy, really.

 

Best sentimental movie - The Crow

He came back from the dead to avenge his girlfriend's murder, not his. He helps out his girlfriend's friend get back together with her mother, and helps a cop out with a case. I literally cry almost every time I see this movie.

 

Best sport movie - Rocky

That's a given. Although Death Race 2000 was a CLOSE CLOSE CLOSE second...

 

Best horror movie - Night Of The Living Dead (1968)

Romero set the tone for EVERY single horror film after this. It had subplots galore.

 

Best Action Movie - Bloodsport

What can I say? Van Damme actually has some really GREAT movies if you look hard enough...

 

Best Shakespear Movie - Tromeo & Juliet

You'd need to see it to believe it.

 

Best TROMA Movie - The Toxic Avenger

As if this wasn't a given...

 

Best War Movie - Born On The Fourth Of July

Tom Cruise really put forth a great performance in this Stone classic. I read parts of the book, and the movie's closeness to it is remarkable.

 

Best Sci-Fi - RoboCop

GIVEN.

 

Best Comic Book Movie - The Crow

Only thing that was changed from the comic to the movie was that Draven was, in the movie, a musician. In the graphic novel, Draven was a construction worker.

best sports movie: 'raging bull'

more about human psychology than boxing.  the kind of twisted empathy i felt for jake la motta was completely unique, the things he did were so horrible but he just couldn't figure it out & didn't seem to know any better.

 

best music movie: 'a hard day's night'

the 'citizen kane' of jukebox musicals.  pure spontaneity.  no movie about popular music will ever touch it.

 

best war movie: 'paths of glory'

heart-wrenchingly sad without being cheesy, cold & cruel without actually being depressing.  lots of tragic movies have that one-glimpse-of-hope stinger at the end, but this movie did it so perfectly & unexpectedly i was in tears.

 

best sentimental movie: 'magnolia'

very, very human movie.  way too inventive to be considered sappy.

 

best action movie: 'deliverance'

like horror movies, dialogue in action movies is usually only there to be cute & it detracts from the real action.  the silences in 'deliverance' were perfect.

 

best horror movie: 'repulsion'

see this movie now.  the first half is very slow, but once it takes off you'll feel like you're being suffocated.  i never jump at movies, & this movie made me jump 3 times.  the best depiction of psychological sickness i've ever seen, but not the kind of horror movie to watch with your friends (i.e., not really a 'fun' movie).

 

best silent movie: 'greed'

i was bored one night & saw this on turner classic movies.  it's 4 hours long (not an exaggeration), but once you settle into it, it's quite an amazing experience.

 

best movie relying totally on dialogue: 'my dinner with andre'

i'm a huge fan of dialogue, & how conversations ebb and flow and take on a life of their own.  this movie reminded me of the deep conversations i used to have with my best friend at waffle house.  

 

best bad movie: 'showgirls'

funny as shit.

 

best anti-capitalist movie: 'fight club'

self-explanatory.

 

best movie without any plot to speak of: 'the big lebowski'

see 'showgirls'

 

best romance: 'before sunrise'

linklater is also a big fan of dialogue, & he made a great romance movie out of 2 talking heads.  the romance isn't forced at all.

 

best non-linear movie: 'lost highway'

i don't think it's necessarily better than non-linear movies like 'pulp fiction' and 'kane', but i do think this movie best-utilized the structure of a non-linear story.  lynch likened it to a moebius strip.
