Guest Some Guy Report post Posted March 31, 2003 I think that most of Canada is pretty respectful of us and most of America is pretty respectful of Canada. Montreal has always been full of assholes. They were booing the American anthem in the playoffs last year, just a few months after 9/11 and the Boston fans, for the most part did not boo the Canadian anthem and we didn't boo it the other day either. I was in Montreal for the games there, and in Boston for the games here, and the main reason that there wasn't boos here was the B's had Billy Guerin make an announcement asking for respect for the CDN anthem. So why didn't on of the Montreal players ask the Frogs to respect us? And I think that the reason that the Habs fans booed the US anthem was because of those Canadians that died in a friendly fire accident at US hands, and the fans there felt that justice wasn't swift/severe enough. I'm really sick of the Canadians whining about this. It was a shame and a tragedy but friendly fire accidents happen in war. In Iraq we've killed Brits by accident, we've killed our own, Brits have killed Brits, and I assume that the Brits haev killed a few Americans. It sucks when it happens and it's very sad but it happens in war. "War is hell and there is no refining it." If you agree to go fight in a war then you know, or should know that friendly fire accidents are unfortunately a part of. You don't hear us bitching at teh Brits or the Brits bitchign at us. we understand what war is. Maybe Canada, or at least Montreal should look into it. But you know the French and war don't mix too well. But bleach sales go up, they want those flags to be bright and white.
Guest bob_barron Report post Posted March 31, 2003 So why didn't on of the Montreal players ask the Frogs to respect us? I don't think they realised the fans would boo the anthem the first time. The next game they had Jean Bellieveau ask the fans to respect the national anthem so they did do the right thing. I don't think they expected their fans to be assholes and boo the anthem. And come on Some Guy- you know ethnic slurs aren't allowed. I'm not saying they should still be bitching about it but I know a lot of Canadians are still POed. While I agree with your friendly fire during war comments, this occurred during a training exercise...
Guest Some Guy Report post Posted April 1, 2003 Come on Bob, "Frog" is just a term of endearment. If they didn't eat them the Brits never would've started it. Starvenger, teh first soldier we lost in Afghanistan has somethign fall on him and the first soldiers to die in Iraq were in a Chopper wreck. Being a trainign exercise or not means little or nothing. It just hurt the Canadian's "we haven't lost a soldier since WWII (or soemthing)" pride.
Guest bob_barron Report post Posted April 1, 2003 Still- Frog is an ethnic slur for French people and ethnic slurs aren't allowed on this board. You could easily get your point across without it. The Habs didn't know their fans would be complete assholes and once they did they immeadately issued a statement of apology and had Jean Beliveau make an appearance asking fans to be respectful. I give them a ton of credit.

Being a trainign exercise or not means little or nothing. Sure it does. The loss of any life is not to be dismissed. Anyways, it happened a while back, there was a big thread on it, let's not dwell on that.
Guest nl5xsk1 Report post Posted April 1, 2003 In regards to the booing of the anthems in the playoffs last year, the first booing took place in MTL - it was too late to request via the jumbotron to not boo. The games in Boston, there was the announcement by Guerin to not boo. Once the series moved back North, there was an announcement by a Hab (Koivu, maybe?) asking for respect. In regards to this year, I don't think anyone had the foresight to predict that there'd be some boos for the US anthem. Once they realized that something needed to be done, the request for respect was made. In regards to the Canadians that died at the US hands, whether it was via friendly fire or not or in a training mis-hap or not, I can see why they'd be pissed. It did seem that the American attitude reeked of apathy, and they were unhappy. (Some Guy, your response seems to support these feelings) Lastly, to try to justify the use of "frog" is pointless. Just either admit it was a joke, or say that you're playing the role of a beligerant American.
