Here's the ones I like the best: Darkfall...The only book to every really scare me while reading Servent of Twilight...crappy movie, great book The Bad Place Night Chills Watchers...(see Servents) Plus others I can't think of right now.

I dont know why I got Phantoms, it was my 1st Koontz book, but Holy $#!t ! I only can rate this book as Awesome. "Hollywood" made the movie but its not that damn good. It's pretty good and what happens in the end is right fucked up. I'm pretty sure that one's Mr. Murder. I also reccomend Dragon Tears and Dark Rivers of the Heart (fucked up stuff in that one). Shattered is also good, and it's pretty short. You might want to pick up Strange HIghways, it's a book of two short novels, and some short stories. "Chase" (one of the short novels in it) is just great.
Guest Youth N Asia Posted March 22, 2003 Report Posted March 22, 2003 Koontz books to avoid: -Icebound...more of a survival story, just boring really. -Sole Survivor...not fun to read. -The Eyes of Darkness...just not entertaining. -Strangers...long f'n book, not bad because that, but I stopped it about half way through cause it was just pissing me off...it took forever for anything to happen. -Hideaway...you ever see the crappy Jeff Goldblume movie with the same name? SKIP THE MOVIE AND THE BOOK!

It seems like every one of his books for the past five years is a story about something that MIGHT be a monster/ghost/what have you....with one guy trying to figure it out, he usually meets a woman along the way, but eventually in the end it always turns out to be some kind of government conspiracy and nothing paranormal at all. I don't know what the government did to him to make him bash them in every book. Has anybody seen the movie version of Whispers? It seems to be the hardest movie to find ever. I remember thinking it was really good. I liked the original movie version of Watchers too but can't find that damn thing either. But if you want shitty Phantoms, it's EVERYWHERE.

Koontz is okay as far as horror / thriller goes. He's not exactly what I would call a "great" writer, but he can be entertaining. My biggest problem is that he doesn't know how to end a damn book. With a lot of his work, the first half to two-thirds will be pretty strong, but then things just fall completely apart. Best examples: "The House of Thunder" (made me want to burn the book) and "Dragon Tears" (which was pretty cool, UNTIL we find out just really who TickTock actually was). I'm currently reading "The Bad Place", and so far it's pretty decent. I have not read all of his books, but of the dozen or so I have read, I would say that "Intensity" is probably the best. I don't know what the government did to him to make him bash them in every book. Absofreakin'lutely. He uses the conspiracy plot twist a LOT. Far more than any author should. BTW, I second the suggestion someone gave of Bentley Little - good stuff from that guy. I also highly recommend Douglas Clegg.

I'd say the same thing about Stephen King. I haven't liked any of his books since The Dark Half and Needful Things. I will say, though, that his book On Writing is tremendous, and is a wonderful thing to read for anyone who does any writing at all.

Personally, I hated House of Thunder as well, however Dragon Tears is one of my favs. I also liked Shattered. There is a new one called The Book of Counted Sorrows that I am pretty eager to read... I'll let you know what I think about it once I have!

Guest Youth N Asia Posted April 30, 2003 Report Posted April 30, 2003 Well it does now then. Dean use to put quotes from that book in his other books, before chapters and whatnot. I read an interview that he did that when he needed a quote and couldn't find one, so he made the whole thing up.
