This afternoon I went and saw Dreamcatcher (a book by Stephen King) with my uncle and his girlfriend.

That being said, I haven't read the book and the preview was so vague (that turns out to be a good thing) that I didn't know what to expect... hell, I didn't even have a real storyline.

But, I must say that I was surprised (pleasant? I don't know about that). A very good movie... from all the movies I've seen this year (not many, mind you) I rank it up with The Two Towers of being that good (different genre, but whatever).

If you want ANY idea on what the fuck this movie is about (if you were ignorant like I was), click here for a hint.

A small spoiler about a character in the movie:

Spoiler (Highlight to Read):

Banky would be pissed since Jason Lee was the first to die in the movie.

EDIT: I also saw Boat Trip and Old School today as well.

what's up with Jason Lee always playing a character with a B-name? Brodie, Bankey, Jeff Bebe (Last name), Beaver in this one. The only one I can think of is Dogma, he played Azrael. What was his name in Vanilla Sky?

Movies based on books by King are always iffy, so I'm glad to hear that this one's actually good.

The books are never as good as the movie, so that's to be expect.

Don't forget that I'm giving *my* opinion on the movie. Others might not share my feelings.

Now don't take this personal...but if it can catch the attention of someone your age then I feel good about the potential of it being good.

The reason I say this is because it doesn't look like the typical movie someone your age would get into. Don't take it as an age based insult.

You're also discounting the fact that I'm x100 more mature than most kids my age, but I still see your point.

Stereotyping~!

EDIT: I left off a zero.

His name was....

BRIAN!

they should've called Affleck's character Azrael and called Lee's character Bartleby just to keep the B-name thing going

What was his name in Stealing Harvard ? I don't recall it starting with a "B"

Lee and Damon running around as angels with Affleck as a demon?

That wouldn't have worked NEARLY as well.

It was John.

Everything I've seen and read about Dreamcatcher makes it sound like a combination of King's It and Carpenter's the Thing. Is that basically what it is or is that just propoganda? I'm like you. I never read the book and haven't paid a whole lot of attention to it.

Guest Flyboy

I only saw half of It and haven't read The Thing, so I really wouldn't know.

If it WAS a combination of the both of them... bravo, King.

Guest El Satanico

Why would you have READ The Thing when it's a movie.

Him saying "Carpenter's" before it should've been a tip off.

Shut up, Satanico.

Anyhow for Lethary since Satanico told me what the The Thing (THE MOVIE) was about:

Spoiler (Highlight to Read):

Yes, that's a part of it

Actually, Lee was meant, originally, to play Bartleby in Dogma

I heard Dreamcatcher was a sequal to The Thing

I saw Dreamcatcher a week ago and yeah, I guess in a sense, it COULD get away to being a sequel to The THing..... but it's not.

What should be talked about though is Morgan Freeman's amazing performance as a true bad-ass. I mean, I'm used to him playing a loveable character, but he REALLY came out looking tough and it was awesome. But as FLyboy said, the previews are REALLY deceiving and like he said again... it's a good thing.

Recomended if you're a fan of good B-rated movies.

This movie went to hell after the first half. The movie was way to overplotted. They should have made it a mini-series on ABC or something instead.

Spoiler (Highlight to Read):

OH, and Jason Lee reaching for that toothpick was insane. If I was trying to hold something that, if it escaped, would eat my fucking guts out, I think I leave the toothpick where it was

No, I meant just switch the NAMES.

And I thought Lee was originally going to be Loki...

This Post Contains Spoilers

I actually though the movie started off good enough. The four guys in the cabin is among the best scenes in the movie.

After they let that guy in the cabin the movie starts to suck. Lets take a look at what happens:

Spoiler (Highlight to Read):

-Psychic Powers

-a government U.F.O. cover-up conspiracy

-A deadly virus

-alien bodysnatching

-a piece of shit with teeth killing people

-The goverment bombs an giant alien craft

-mentally handicapped duddits saves the world

And this all happens in the span of 2 and a half hours.

I've heard that this movie stays true to the book, which makes me believe that Stephen King's movies are better transfered to the big screen when they are only loosely based on the novel.

Just a thought on something earlier in the thread, about "why would you want to READ The Thing"...

Because the excellent short story, "Who Goes There," is a wonderful allegory of McCarthy-era paranoia, and the source material for The Thing. I'd recommend seeing Carpenter's version first as it's one of the absolute best horro movies I've ever scene, then reading "Who Goes There," and if you want something completely different, check out the 195...4, I think it is, version, starring James Arness as a big vegetable monster that is really, really only loosely inspired by the original story.

In the book, Jason Lee has a severe nervous problem and , so that would be reason enough for his actions.

(As someone told me)

That and they make one with their special friend.

Other than that... that's all it has to do with the movie.

Here's a small preview that doesn't give away TOO much... although, I'll put it in spoiler tags just because.

Spoiler (Highlight to Read):

Jonesy, Henry, Pete and Beaver. Twenty years ago they were just kids in a small town in Maine - kids who found the courage to respond heroically to childhood cruelty. In saving a strange boy named Duddits, they unexpectedly gained a fifth friend at the center of their circle. Even more unexpected were the uncanny powers he conveyed to them, bonding them all beyond ordinary friendship. Now the four are men with separate lives and separate problems, haunted by the memory of heroism, with powers that are more of a burden than a gift. When a shocking accident almost claims one of them, they don't at first recognize the return of the eeriness that is somehow linked to Duddits. But when they reunite for their annual visit to a hunting cabin in the north woods, anticipating only the warmth and humor that nourishes them, they are overtaken by a gathering doom. First comes a stranger, a lost hunter unaware of the terrible contagion he bears. On his heels is a blizzard, a vicious storm in which something much more ominous moves--a deadly alien force that will consume some of the foursome and force those who make it to the end of the road to once again summon their forgotten strength--and confront an unparalleled horror.
