Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Report post Posted February 6, 2002 Royal Rumble 2002 January 20, 2002 We open with a look back at Royal Rumble's past. Hacksaw Jim Duggan one the first one...there's a memory...OOOH Hulk Hogan...Flair is God...Micheals...Austin...Austin...McMahon...Rock...Austin... What? No Yokozuna? That's a rip off. We close on HHH... I wonder who will win? The Royal Rumble is brought to you by Final Fantasy X...and Kid Rock's cocky is the song de jour. The sold out (I hope that one day a ppv doesn't sell out...just to see if he'd lie) Phillips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. 16,106 is the attendence. It's JR and Lawler...DAMN IT. Opening match time: WWF world tag team championship Spike Dudley & Taz(z) © vs. The Dudley Boyz Spike is sporting a neckbrace...because of the fake beatdown from his fake brothers in a parking lot...that I will assume was real. Dudley's dominate to start. They seperate the midgets and take out Taz(z) on the outside. That leaves Spike (which means it's time for another beatdown). Bubba works on the neck...dare I say it...PSYCHOLOGY in a Dudley match? Neckbreaker...his brace is removed...another neckbreaker...kick to the head. I think that getting beat up IS Spike's offense. D-von is tagged in. Doesn't really know what to do so...Bubba is tagged back in. He delivers a brainbuster. He attempts another one, but it is reversed into the Dudley Dog coughaciddropcough Ref doesn't see tag to Taz(z)...which is amazing, because everyone else sees it coming. Double team on Spike leads to a flapjack. Spike moves away from a D-Von headbutt. Dudley's miss Spike and clothesline each other. Hot tag to Taz(z)...he clears house with his pattented SUPLEX RAMPAGE and gets a near fall with a modified fisherman's suplex. Spike hits a high cross body (which Bubba oversells) Taz(z) with a kick to the head (which Bubba oversells) Spike hits the Dudley Dog coughaciddropcough again. Stacy gets on the apron and gets the Taz(z)mission. D-von breaks it up and reverses a Dudley Dog coughaciddropcough by throwing Spike over the top rope and out of the ring (it's sad when that is his pattented move). That leaves D-von alone with Taz(z). Taz(z)mission makes D-von tap at (5:09) Winners and still tag team champions: Spike & Taz(z) That's pretty short for a title match. No tables? Good for them. Short but effective. One of the better Dudley matches in recent memory...probably their best (read: only)without a gimmick or table spot. **1/4 We move right into the match history for Edge vs. Regal...If you watch closely, RVD gets more airtime during this backstory then he does later in the rumble. Regal is deep into this brass knuckles fetish. Got to love that old school heel heat. Lillian Garcia interviews Edge. Edge cuts a bad promo about using a chair. The crowd pops anyway...sheep. WWF intercontinental championship Edge © vs. William (don't call me Steven...Lord...or Man's Man) Regal Evil refaree Nick Patrick is checking around the ring for brass knuckles. How exactly DOES he choose which rules he is going to enforce? Edge is more over than my mind allows me to understand. Patrick checks Regal for knucks...and finds them after STICKING HIS HANDS DOWN HIS TIGHTS. Why didn't they save that maneuver for Billy & Chuck? The bell rings and Edge takes the offense with clotheslines and a backbody drop...kicking and choking in the corner. Edge rams Regal's head into the canvas a few times (psychology is running rampant tonight) to try and re-injure Regal's reconstructed nose. Regal counters an irish whip with a knee to the gut, which he follows up with a knee to the head. A couple of forearms and Regal's european uppercut is countered into a backslide. 2 count on Regal (proving once again that a backslide pins no one). Regal punches Edge in the mouth (I see he's adapting to the WWF style after all). Face lock on Edge...broken by the ropes. Edge reverses an irish whip into an enziguri. Edge looks winded...which is sad considering the match is about two minutes old. Regal hits a fucked up overhead belly to back suplex that sees Edge land on his head. 2 count. Regal tries to pin him two more times, which results in two more 2 counts. I hate that move...if you didn't get him the first time...just give up and move on. Regal drives his knees into Edge's face, and gets a 2 count. Followed by ANOTHER 2 count. Damn I thought he had him there...on the second try...with no offensive moves in between. Um...I'll call the next move a modified chin lock...which leads to another punch. Edge counters a butterfly suplex attempt into a backdrop/pinning combo...2 count. Regal holds on to the arms and tries again. Powerbomb on Edge...2 count. Another punch from Regal. Knee to Edge's head knocks him to the outside. They're on the apron, and Edge reverses another butterfly suplex attempt...this time into a DDT. They both fall to the outside. Edge rolls Regal back in and tries to pin him. Regal is half under the ropes and Edge is even farther out...but Patrick counts anyway. He gets to 2 before he realizes that he is an idiot. They knock each other down after running into each other (sign #1 that they don't know what to do next) When they reach their feet they trade punches (sign #2) Edge knocks Regal down several times and then suplexes him. 2 count. Regal hits a nice looking waistlock suplex...which Edge no-sells by getting right up and clotheslining Regal. JR calls it "desperation"...he's such a mark. 2 count on Regal. Regal reverses the Edgeacution into the Regal stretch. Edge makes it to the ropes. Edge puts Regal in a poor looking Regal stretch of his own. He also gets to the ropes. Edge dropkicks Regal and rolls him up for 2. Regal catches Edge going up top. He attempts a top rope suplex but gets pushed off by Edge. Spinning heel kick by Edge. Regal goes into his trunks for a SECOND PAIR OF BRASS KNUCKS. That's almost too clever. Edge goes for the spear. Regal pulls the ref in front of him so he takes the spear. Regal hits his finisher (brass knuckles to the head) and knocks Edge out. The ref eventually comes to and counts to 3 at (9:44) Winner and new intercontinental champion: William Regal Better than their match at Vengeance. But it's pretty sad that Edge can have a better match with Test than with Regal. Regal's style doesn't really work well with others. Still, they gave their all...and there were less slow spots than last time. **1/2 Micheal Cole tries to interview Regal on his way back to the dressing room. Regal thanks God for the creation of brass knuckles. At least he still has class. Plug for Kid Rock's new album. WWF women's championship Trish Stratus © vs. Jazz Jacqui is the special guest refaree. They replay Jazz' attack on Trish from Smackdown. Trish' hand is hurt. If Spike had a neckbrace...I'm sure she'll have a cast...and she does. Jazz attacks Trish and the bell rings (even though Jacqui never called for it) Jazz punches Trish while she is trying to get her jacket off. That's more ingenuity than I thought the WWF put into the women's division. Trish is back body dropped and gets hit with a **1/2 frog splash. 2 count. Trish punches Jazz and gets a 1 count after a sunset flip. They trade 1 counts as they go through the classic cruiserweight pin reversal spot. I must admit, they do it a lot better than RVD/Chris Jericho did. Big clothesline by Jazz sends Trish to the mat, followed by a good old fashioned Stun Gun. Jazz hits a big leg drop and gets 2. Jazz goes to work on the hand...(even in the women's match...psyhology) Jazz gets in Jacqui's face and they push each other. Trish tries a roll-up but Jazz counters into a pin, that Jacqui hesitates to count...2 count. Trish tries a comeback...which leads to a 2 count after a bulldog...Jazz reverses the pin into a 2 count. Jazz hits a DDT that only gets 2. Trish is ok at selling...but she really needs to work on her kick out timing. Big Splash in the corner on Trish. A second one meets a big (well OK...little) boot and a bulldog for the 3 at (3:42) Winner and still women's champion: Trish Stratus I usually don't advocate DQ finishes...but that's what this needed. I don't get Trish winning clean. They spent a month (a LOOOOONG time in women's wrestling) building Jazz up as a monster...to have her job clean? Who booked that? Probably the best women's match since Trish/Stephanie at last years No Way Out. *1/2 Ric Flair is shown entering the building with two of his children...neither of which is David, and that makes me smile. They show the match history for Vince vs. Flair Street Fight Ric Flair vs. Vince McMahon RIc Flair's enterance is awesome. Vince looks absolutely disgusting. Stare down to start. Everytime a match starts like that I hear Tony Shiavone at Bash at the Beach 1994 in my head "It's the staredown time...the intimadation time...of the two men...finally meeting" That was for an already old Flair, and an already old Hogan. Now it's 8 years later and Hogan's coming back and Flair's in the ring. Go figure. The bell sounds and they circle each other. They start off with a tieup...because that's how all sworn enemies start a street fight. Vince pushes Flair off and he does one of those ridiculous flips that makes me think he taught the Rock how to sell. Vince poses. Ick. Another tieup, that Vince turns into a side headlock. Flair pushes him off and gets knocked down for his troubles. More posing. More ick. And a strut...OK this one is a stretch...but given the story leading up to this match (Vince dressing as Flair and what not) I'm going to go ahead and play the psychology card again...just to keep the streak going. They lock up again and this time Flair gets an old school take down on Vince. Punches and kicks on Vince in the corner. Vince kicks Flair in the gut and shoulderblocks him a couple of times in the corner. Vince unloads a chop and a Whoo...which pisses Flair off so he throws some chops of his own. CLASSIC EYE GOUGE by Vince. Irish whip and a clothesline on Flair. FLAIR FLOP! It's been too long. Flair tries to do the FLAIR FLIP over the turnbuckle...but methinks age has finally caught up with him. Vince clotheslines Flair off of the apron. They're both on the outside now, and Vince hits Flair with a sign a couple of times. Flair gets whipped into the guardrail so that he has time to blade. Vince brings back a trash can and hits Flair with it. Flair is, by the way, THE BEST BLADER EVER. Vince works him over on the outside for longer than a promoter should ever beat up a wrestler. He tries to humiliate Flair in front of his children...but...if Flair isn't humiliated by the sight of him wrestling with his shirt off...this won't work. They're back in the ring and Vince works on Flair's leg. His aresenol includes a weak leg lock, and an even weaker looking ankle lock (that he's got on backwards) Flair sells like a champ though. Vince slaps on the figure-four leglock (which leads to two 2 counts) (I just used the word two three different ways in a row...sweet) Flair reverses. Vince has his lead pipe now and gets back in the ring. He goes to hit Flair but Flair gets the low blow and Vince drops the pipe. They go back outside, because Vince isn't exactly the ring technician needed to carry the action INSIDE the ring. Flair stages a comeback and unloads with a series of chops. Flair takes the covering off of the breakaway table and hits McMahon with a monitor. He then proceeds to yell into the monitor...even though it is no longer working...and monitor's can't hear. Flair tosses Vince back into the ring...and then pulls him back out (obviously remebering the humiliating McMahon in front of his children spot)...Now they are back in the ring again...and this time they are supposed to be. Another low blow. Flair grabs the pipe and lays Vince out with it. He slaps on the figure-four and Vince taps at (14:56) Winner: Ric Flair Surprisingly (and thankfully) there was no interference. Vince controlled too much...but that's what heels do. Kudos to Vince for tapping clean. Enjoyable...if slow. Better than expected...as the last thing I expected was an actual match. **3/4 Stephanie interrupts a Nick Patrick interview to run her mouth about her husband. Austin over hears her and interrupts with his stupid What?s inciting the crowd to join along. I hate that fucking chant. If Micheal Cole is straight and not retarded...he's doing a damn good job hiding it. Match history for Jericho vs. Rock Undisputed WWF championship Chris Jericho © vs. The Rock Jericho gets to come out second. Almost unheard of for a heel champion. The Rock is as over as Hogan was in his prime. He's like the anti-Hogan. They bring him out and the flashbulbs go...but usually he's going to lose. He loses, and he's popular? I wonder if Hogan could have pulled that off? I doubt we will ever know. "IT's the staredown time...the intimi..." alright I've already used that reference. Staredown to start. Jericho talks some trash and busts out the international symbol for "Shut Your Mouth And Just Bring It" right in the Rock's face. And the Rock is like...You want it...you got it. And the Rock hits Jericho with a right hand and knock him down. And Jericho's like...dude...is that all you got? Don't you know how to wrestle? A single tear rolls down the Rocks cheek as he is forced to the realization, that NO...he does not. So he does the next best thing and starts punching away. Samoan drop leads to a 2 count. Jericho is Irish whipped and he slides out of the ring. The Rock follows and chases him around the ring...because the first ever undisputed champion...is a coward. The Rock hits a spear (so now he thinks he's Goldberg) and unloads with a series of punches to the face (so now he thinks he's Austin). Jericho gains the upperhand with a kick to the Rock's chest countering an attempted back body drop. Jericho hits Rock with a running clothesline and then slaps him in the face. Rock dodges a shoulderblock and Jericho hits the ringpost. Jericho gets back on the offensive with a good old fashioned Stun Gun.A series of kicks follows, and some chops. Spinning heel kick gets a 2. Suplex and the FOOT ON THE CHEST pin attempt gets a 2. Jericho removes a turnbuckle signaling the fact that this match won't end clean (and a Rock match too...go figure). Jericho tries for the WALLS OF JERICHO, but the Rock gets out of it. I think my favorite thing about heel Jericho is how he talks through his matches. I'm not just talking about his highly audible "calling of spots", but the way he yells out stuff like "C'MON ROCK!" or "C'MON REF!" or when he tries the FOOT ON THE CHEST pin, "C'MON BABY!" Jericho hits Rock with a dropkick off the top rope...and gets a 2 count. He slaps on a chinlock...and they rest. After the Rock escapes...Jericho tries to go up top, but is knocked down by the Rock. Punches and chops set up a superplex on Jericho. More punches from Rock...a 2 count after what can be best described as a monkey flip. Jericho reverses a whip into a bulldog and proceeds to hit 2 lionsaults. He only gets a 2 count.Jericho argues with Earl and ascends the turnbuckle...the Rock counters a dropkick into a...a...um...sharpshooter? Lance Storm and Christian run out to distract the ref. I'm glad to see that they dropped Test from this group...as they were losing about 10-15 degrees of heat by association. Anyway...Jericho is tapping, but the ref is distracted. Isn't that always the way? Rock takes out both Storm and Christian...but gets hit with a Rock Bottom by Jericho...2 count. Storm and Christian are escorted from ringside...When they reach the backstage area, they are informed about the imminant return of the NWO and are downgraded from midcard to unemployed. Meanwhile... Jericho sets the Rock up for the People's Elbow...but the Rock is wise to his moves and gets up and throws him over the top rope. They're both outside now and the Rock is clearing off the breakaway announce table. Jericho says "I don't think so pal" and clears off the other breakaway table. The spanish breakaway table. They stand on top of the spanish breakaway table and Jericho sets up for the Rock bottom. The Rock counters and Rock Bottom's Jericho from one table to the other. So they were standing on the spanish announce table (which they always break) and ended up going through the other table...That may be the absolute oddest piece of psychology I have ever seen. But the streak continues. Jericho is tossed into the ring and the Rock gets a 2 count. Rock tries for another Rock Bottom, but Jericho counters it into the WALLS OF JERICHO. The Rock makes it to the ropes...because God knows he can't tap. Jericho tries to put the Rock in the WALLS OF JERICHO again, but Rock has already read the script so he rolls him up in a small package for a 2 count. A ref bump follows and Jericho hits Rock with the belt and calls for another ref...Nick Patrick comes down and makes a 2 count. Rock hits a DDT and the evil ref Nick Patrick won't count. So the Rock hits him with the Rock Bottom and then catches Jericho with a spine buster. People's elbow connects...but there is no ref. Realizing that he is out of moves, Jericho decides it is time to cheat and he gives Rock a Low Blow, Rams his head into the exposed steel turnbuckle and pins him with his feet on the ropes (all in one swift motion) to get the three at (18:43) Winner and still undisputed WWF champion: Chris Jericho I always thought that their match at No Mercy was overrated. It was too slow. Vengeance was better...but it had the worse ending. All thing considered...this was the best of the three. **** Shawn Micheals is at WWF New York. I guess they think that is the best place for him. They think a lot of things. They plug No Way Out. It's on February 17th. They should just change the name of it to "The Road to WrestleMania" because they spend more time building towards that ppv, than No Way Out. The Match history for the Royal Rumble is played. The Fink goes over the rules. I have no joke for this. The Royal Rumble Rikishi draws #1. Goldust draws #2. They had to put Goldust in the top 2 because of his stupid enterance. Rikishi doesn't thrill me. In retrospect I think that we were all jipped out of Rikishi giving Goldust the stinkface and then having Goldust like it. They trade blows and Goldust almost goes out a couple of times. They pretty much kill time until the next enterant. And the payoff: The Big Boss Man is #3. Nothing terribly interesting happens until #4 comes out. Bradshaw enters #4. He runs through everyone. Bossman gets the stinkface. Yipee. Bradshaw works on Goldust (insert joke here) and Rikishi tosses out the Bossman...proving that there is a God...or at least someone in the back who realizes the Bossman sucks. Lance Storm comes out #5 (you would think he is going to be the iron man). Goldust tries to hit him with a good old fashioned Stun Gun...but misses the ropes completely. Al Snow is #6. Bradshaw hits Storm with the clothesline from hell (OR: the one move he does pretty good). Billy Gunn is #7. He goes right after Bradshaw...I suppose to give him hell from gay people evreywhere. Al Snow elimiates Lance Storm...throwing that whole "there is a god" theory back into question. Goldust and Billy throw out Bradshaw...no comment. Undertaker is #8, and we have our first serious threat of a guy who could win. Chokeslam on Billy. takes down everyone else. Taker eliminates Goldust with a chokeslam out of the ring. Taker eliminates Al Snow. Big Boot to Rikishi. Taker eliminates Rikishi. Taker eliminates Billy. Taker stands alone...I smell a storylin a brewin'. Matt Hardy is #9. Apparently he reunited with Lita and Jeff. Woopee. The only reason they are back together is because they were failures...always remember that. Taker and Matt go at it and Lita gets involved...hits Taker with a low blow and Matt hits the Twist Of Fate. They both beat him down and then Lita leaves. Jeff Hardy is #10. Gee...tag team partners drawing back to back numbers...I've NEVER SEEN THAT ONE BEFORE. Lita gets back in and joins the beatdown...proving that no one cheats more than team xtreme. The fun doesn't last, though as Taker tosses out Jeff. Then Taker tosses out Matt. Maven comes out #11. Big Boot to Maven. Lita cheats again and gets pushed down like she deserves. The Hardys get back in and cheat again and the crowd boos them for it. Taker gets them out of the ring and he is eliminated by a Maven drop kick. Something tells me this isn't going to be good for Maven. Taker gets back in and proceeds to kick the crap out of Maven. At one point, Taker throws Maven over the top rope...depending on which Rumble you subscribe to for your rules...Maven either was or wasn't eliminated. Scotty 2 Hotty is #12. I think this is the third year in a row that Scotty comes out and gets laid out by Taker. Taker takes Maven through the crowd and beats him up at a concession stand. Meanwhile...Christian is #13. Scotty is still down from Taker's ONE FRICKIN PUNCH...so Christian relaxes in the corner. Eventually he gets back up and pretends he's not a bitch. DDP is #14. DDP gets a good reaction...but half the crowd is cheering, and half is booing. They have really done a piss poor job with him. Scotty sets up Christian for the only move dumber than the people's elbow...hits the worm and gets eliminated by DDP. Chucky Polumbo is #15. Oh...I get it...he's gay. The Godfather is #16. We watch his stupid enterance instead of the ring for the next 2 minutes. Meanwhile...DDP gets elimnated (off camera) by Christian. Albert is #17. He hits a big splash on Christian, then one on Chucky. Scissors kick to Godfather's face. Albert is eliminated by Christian & Chucky. Godfather misses the Ho Train and is eliminated by Christian & Chucky. Saturn is #18. Steve Austin is #19. Austin beats down everyone and eliminates Christian. Stunner on Saturn. Austin eliminates Chucky. Austin eliminates Saturn. He has a lot of time on his hands so he finds Christian, brings him back in, Stunns him and eliminates him again. Then he gets Chucky, Stunns him, and eliminates him again. Saturn escapes the embarrasment...but shoots on Chucky on the way to the back. Val Venis is #20. Austin starts beating him down. Venis turns the tables and decides not to be a jobber anymore...and last longer than one entrant. Test is #21. And for a moment...the entire world goes silent. Double team on Austin. JR still thinks Test is on fire...If he likes big guys so much...why didn't they push Mike Awesome...he's big AND has talent. Test big boot misses Austin and hits Val. Austin eliminates Venis. Stunner on Test. Austin eliminates Test. Austin stands alone. If you don't know who's coming next...there's something wrong with you. HHH draws #22. It takes him a long time to get to the ring. They stare each other down...then finally go at it. Basic back and forth stuff. Hurricane Helms is #23. He gets in the ring while both Austin & HHH are down. He grabs both HHH & Austin by the throat and Austin & HHH shoot each other a classic look. They eliminate Hurricane and go back to their back and forth routine. Farrooq is #24. Farrooq has been elimnated before the next guy has come out the last two years. Stunner on Faarooq. HHH elimnates Faarooq. Make that three years. Mr. Perfect is #25. He takes his time getting to the ring. Kurt Angle is #26. Gee...aside from Taker...every single person who COULD win was saved to the end. BAD idea. Not only is it unbeleivable...but they have robbed us of an iron man. Shame on them. Big Show is #27. Chokeslam on Mr. Perfect. Kane is #28. Kane picks up show and throws him out singlehandedly. I refuse to acknowledge anything that results in a Kane/Big Show fued as impressive. Angle uses the Olympic Slam to eliminate Kane. RVD is #29. (Possibly the dumbest idea ever...proving once again that the WWF doesn't know/care what to do with his massive pops) He hits the ***** frog splash on Angle. Clears out everyone else and gets pedigreed by HHH. Booker T is #30 He eliminates RVD (to piss everyone off) does the spinaroony and gets a stunner that sends him out of the ring, eliminated by Austin. Final Four: Steve Austin, Mr. Perfect, Kurt Angle & HHH They start off with fast paced action between HHH, Angle & Austin. Olympic Slam on HHH. Chris Benoit's Rolling Germans on Steve Austin. Low Blow from Austin on Angle. Kurt Angle eliminated Steve Austin. Austin is not pleased with this and he pulls Perfect out to beat him up some more. Angle goes outside and takes out Austin. This too leaves Austin less than pleased. So he gets a chair, gets back in the ring and lays out everyone. They should have had it come down to HHH/Austin (especially if they are building to Austin/HHH at Mania). Perfect is almost elimonated. Perfect Plex gets a nice pop...Perfect is eliminated by HHH. So we're down to HHH and Angle. Another stare down. Back and Forth. Angle thinks he has eliminated HHH, but his feet didn't touch (because he thinks he's cool like Shawn Micheals in 1995...but he's not.) Angle is celebrating his "victory" and HHH comes back in and eliminates him at (69:17) Not the best...certainly not the worst. No Iron Man. Predictable winner. They misused...just about everyone. And HHH in the Mania main event after 8 months off...kind of...sucks (at least for the guys busting ass while he was gone). However, it was a pretty entertaining match. One of the more entertaining rumbles...and most frustrating...ever. So...there was some good...Somewhere. *** Why don't they go to WWF New York now, and ask Shawn how he feels about being ripped off? So...after 8 months away, HHH wins the Royal Rumble. Predictable. As the show goes off the air...JR says something to the effect of "He went through eight months of hell to come back and win at WrestleM..The Royal Rumble!" We know where you were going...And we're sure you will be making that call in march. The Three Stars of The Night: 3. Whoever had the balls to book a tableless Dudley match 2. The Rock 1. Chris Jericho Overall: Nothing was truly bad on the show. It was worth what it cost...and it was what it was...a three hour advertisement for WrestleMania. Stay tuned because No Way Out will be more of the same. Overall Rating: ***
Guest Tony149 Report post Posted February 6, 2002 Good review. Some points I'll like to make Ric Flair is indeed the wrestling God. Kinda weird to know about Bash at the Beach '94 and how history is somewhat repeating itself. If Vince turns Flair heel just to squash him to a returning Hogan then lighting does strike twice. I still don't understand RVD's quick exit. The fans were waiting for him to come out and when he did the crowd popped huge.
Guest Choken One Report post Posted February 6, 2002 Good Review even with some Rumble Inaccurates. Such as S2H getting punked out by Undertaker three years in row. This year in the aisle and last year wth Kane. In 2000, Taker was still on Hiatus and S2H was dumped out by Rikishi after the dance off.
Guest JAMES900 Report post Posted February 6, 2002 Apart from that though the review was pretty solid.
Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Report post Posted February 7, 2002 Oh that's right...I don't know why I thought that happened in 2000. Last year I remember him coming out when both UT & Kane were in the ring and getting beaten down. (They were running another one of those are they together? teases that everyone loves so much.)
