10 U.S. Soldiers Hurt In Grenade Attack

(CBS) Ten U.S. soldiers were injured, six or seven of them seriously, in a grenade and small arms attack at Camp Pennsylvania in northern Kuwait, reports CBS News Correspondent Mark Strassmann, who is traveling with the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division.

Strassmann said the grenades were rolled into two commanders' tents at the camp. When officers ran from the tents, they were hit by small arms fire.

"From our reports it appears that a terrorist penetrated Camp Pennsylvania, one or more terrorists threw two hand grenades into a tent," said George Heath, spokesman at Fort Campbell, home base of the 101st.

Strassman said three suspects were being held for questioning, two Kuwaitis who served a translators and an American soldier described as a black Muslim.

The injured soldiers were rushed to a field hospital but military officials had no word on their conditions, Lt. Cmdr. Charles Owens said from Camp As Sayliyah in Qatar.

The military did not identify the unit of the 101st that was in the camp but said it had been in Kuwait for about one week. Most of the division has entered southern Iraq.

Separately, Strassmann reported, an Iraqi rocket fired at U.S. forces in Kuwait was destroyed by Patriot missiles launched from nearby Camp New Jersey.

The terror and missile attack came as the U.S. assault on Iraq gained steam. American and British forces besieged the southern city of Basra and pounded Baghdad with impunity. But tough fighting loomed for coalition troops as they pressed deeper into Iraq.

Too bad we're too big of a pussy nation now to use a firing squad.

In a way, I have a feeling that this guy is going to get the snot beaten out of him when someone "isn't looking" if you catch my drift.

If that man was really a radical muslim and he really threw grenades into tents, and he really did it because he believed it was his duty as a muslim...

liberal peaceful muslims in america and across the world have no greater enemies than peopel like him. Now there will be more people who will distrust all muslims, because of this incident.

I'm hoping for a serious speech by leaders of Mosques across the country condemning this kind of action. This war has never ever been about Islam, at least not even on Bush's end. I can't believe anyone would buy that. So Muslims should be just as willing as anyone else to get rid of Saddam.

I don't understand this.

We heard Jack and Shit after 9/11, so don't bet on it. Someone seriously needs to explain to the Non-Radical Musims that they MUST do something loudly and publicly to condemn and separate themselves from radicals. Silence is being perceived as unity.

Who was it that said something like "Silence implies consent?"

And what's worse, they could do so much good, they could actually influence people to move away from radical islam, which is IMO a totally dead end road.

Some of them do. They don't get much attention though. Also, many Muslims feel intentionally targeted by the U.S. government as of late as though they're being treated differently and unfairly due to their race/religion/whatever, and thus are anti-war at the same time. You probably won't like them and will call them irrelevant because of that, but anyway.

Some of these are more extreme than others, but here's a list of various articles I pulled up w/ quotes

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/artic...-2003Mar21.html

A senior Lebanese Shiite Muslim cleric called Friday for Iraqis to topple President Saddam Hussein, blaming him for their country's destruction.

Grand Ayatollah Sheik Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah, who strongly opposes the U.S.-led war on Iraq, also accused the United States of behaving like an "arrogant empire" by ignoring the anti-war protests worldwide.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/international/st...,919541,00.html

Part of his sermon was directed at the younger members of the audience, some as young as nine, who had come to pray. "The young generation is angry at this time because they feel Muslim brothers are being killed without cause or reason. We need to cool them down. We tell them we want peace. We should protest against this war but in a democratic way, obeying the laws of this country."

Again, there's some more, but it's all calls for peaceful anti-war protest. You're not going to see many muslims saying "Support Bush, lets' go bomb Iraq" after the immigration registering debacle and, of course, the Israel thing.

Still, encouraging peace and non-violent protest is better than nothing if you're going to be anti-war. There was a lot more sympathy for the US during the war against the Taliban. It's seem to disappear over time for whatever reason.

If this traitor had anything to do with this, he should be hung for treason.

Not only is it that it's horrible it happened, and it IS horrible. It also will make other people in our military question other muslim's on our side, and could possible cause many problems within our own ranks.

People will start thinking that muslim's signed up ONLY to be on our side, to do things like this, and with that type of stuff going around, I wouldn't blame our soldiers for at least somewhat questioning their fellow muslim comrades.

My mom asked what if it was some soldier involved. I told her no way.

Was this suspect the person who was supposed to be on guard duty?

Yep. Guarding the grenade tent, oddly enough.

While I think it's very upsetting, I've offset that with happyness that so far all the victims are still alive.

I have to agree. I'm so happy that none of them died from this horrible Benedict Arnold's actions.

Not yet at least. Last I heard 6 where still in serious condition.

This is still an act of treason. He should put in front of the firing squad.

Yes but they have all kinds of doctors ready. One of the CNN reporters is actually a brain surgeon.

Let me at least be slightly optimistic. I have plenty of time to be pissed off should one of them pass on.

Also, I absolutely pity this guy for what's going to happen to him. I mean, he's a traitor and wounded thirteen of his comrades, but still. He's going to live a short and painful life.

(short and painful after the conclusion of the court martial, anyway, which should be pretty quick, too)

There's no reason to pity him. He made his own bed.

I don't pity him in a "poor guy" way, I pity him in a "I pity the foo'!" way.

God dammit, I'm now officially annoyed by the term Muslim-American. Do you call people Christian-Americans? Atheiest-Americans? No, so stop calling the fucking AMERICAN SOLDIER that threw the grenades a "Muslim-American." I thought this wasn't a war on Islam...

In other news, this further lends credence to my own personal theory about how much violence is bred by religion.

It's not a war on Islam from our end. Apparently, the sentiment is not shared by those of the Muslim faith.

I have to say this, though - the Muslim religion itself has almost single-handedly made me completely anti-religion.

CNN showed him on videophone, all covered up and sitting down, and what looked like a leg wound. I hope they save this guy for last and treat the others first, and this guy bleeds out from his wound and dies.

Scary though - the 101st is sort of an elite outfit, combine that and the fact that the American Army is a volunteer one and this is shocking. Its something you would expect from Vietnam. Hopefully this soldier will go to that same prison John Walker Lindh is in to spend his days.

Not like Christians have never done anything. Again, I think all religions have zealots, but the problem is that everyone, no matter if they discriminate based on religion or not, take it so damn seriously

Go listen to George Carlin on religion sometime and the lengths it drives people to. It's kind of refreshing sometimes.

I'm just getting tired of this "Muslim-American" label. It's like at The Olympics when they had black people from OTHER COUNTRIES and were calling them "African-American Athletes." What.. The.. Fuck?

John Walker Lindh is a civilian who took arms to defend a government he considered himself a member of. The only reason he has any special treatment over any other enemy combatant is because of the 'Oh, but he's really a civilian! He's confused!' defense.

This guy is a trained soldier who turned on his chain of command. There will be MUCH less tolerance for him.

Christians do lots of bad shit, sure. They'll bomb abortion clinics, form bizarre militias. Most of the KKK pervert the Bible into suiting their own needs.

Still - it all comes back to 9-11 for me.

Islam extremists.

This jackoff here - possibility that he could be a "disgruntled" (to make an understatement) Muslim. Taking up arms against his own country.

Not trying to pick which religion is worse or anything. Just for me, personally - the past year & a half, the Muslim faith alone has sort of turned me off religion in general in a BIG way.

This guy will either be hung, shot, or sent to Leavenworth. I'd say being shot will be the most humane thing considering what the guys at Leavenworth would to to him. The question is whether the military will have the patience to see this guy REALLY suffer.
