I'll spare my "I told you so" for a bit, because I want to see how someone here is going to defend the U.N.

You KNOW that someone will.

If and when you do, whomever you are, please don't cop the "They would have found this with more inspections!" argument, because they were there a few MONTHS, while we were there a few DAYS and found it.

RIGHT. So the "more inspections" argument has been destroyed. I too, would like to see someone come up with an excuse.

Now now, Iraq promised that they didn't have these kinds of things hidden away.

Methinks the LAPD planted the evidence...

To anyone who thinks this does not prove something illegal is being done or thier is no proff off this then:

- If Saddam and his people were just making windex or weed killer please explain to me why was the plant camouflaged?

Will they hire Johnny Cochrane?

"If the inspectors did not find the chemicals, then you can't treat the Iraqi leadership as criminals."

Ahh, it's the best I got on short notice.

What was mentioned was that the inspectors simply didn't know about it. Not that it didn't exist but more like they didn't consider it a facility to check.

Some claim that the facility was made for a dual compacity, with legitament business as well as illegitament.

What i think its funny is how the place is not confirmed as a chem weapon lab, just a 100 acre chemical Lab and Fox news Just busts out the we told you so line of questioning and proclaim this as a Weapons lab before the Military force can even verify it.

Remember back in 97 Clinton had bombed Sudan where they too hit a Chemical lab in Sudan, the local governments claimed that the lab in Sudan wasn't a chem weapon lab but a PH lab.

The commentators making alot about the cammo efforts of the Iraqi's of the lab but the inspector also manage to rebutt it effectively that when they were there no one was cammoing any facility and they weren't there during War time. So it would make you wonder if this is being blown 2 times over proportion without full Confirmation by the Military.

Be nice to know what chemicals are being cooked up which we could tell....

I don't they would be making Nyquil out of VX or Anthrax

Well, I've always believed the the UN was sort of full of it, so I'm not going to bother defending them.

That said, I still oppose going in without UN support, but hey, flame away.

I think Fox is once again jumping the gun here. I have no doubt the US found some kind of factory, the question is what chemicals are there. Headlines like this tend to result in a lot of people jumping to conclusions, kind of like the Scuds they reported a couple days ago.

CNN is now reporting it but they said it can not be confirmed at this time. They also say there is no evidence that it's a weapons facility.

Man I'm curious as to how Blix and the rest of his "crack team" managed to miss a 100 ACRE plant less than 100 miles outside Baghdad. Even if it was camo'd, you'd think someone would have eventually noticed something.

"Hey what's that thing? It looks like some sort of plant with some houses around it"

"That? Oh no that's just a...uhhh...what's that over there? Look it's a flying camel!"

The very fact that it has been camoflaged and had an electric fence, a 30 man security force, and a military general in charge of the whole operation makes it very suspicious to me.

Fair and balanced news update: Fox news has changed their headline from "Fox: 'Huge' Chemical Weapons Factory Found", to "'Huge' Suspected Chemical Weapons Factory Found".

CNN suddently is not reporting on this situation at all. It just dropped like a bad habit.

I love how everyone jumps all over the UN for this when they very well could have inspected it and found nothing wrong with it. Next time, let's maybe wait for the facts, or a reliable source.

Another thing to consider: what if it was inspected early on, nothing was found there, and then the Iraqis started using it after seeing that it wouldn't be an issue again?

Exactly. Iraq does have several plants that can be dual purpose plants. What's the difference between a chemical plant and a fertilizer plant (ok that's stretching it but go with me for a bit here)? Blix and company go to the plant and find nothing at all harmful. They leave, and it's business as usual. Processing equipment can have more than one use.

well its a question of whats in the inspectors mind at the time....you got political pressure proclaiming a place is a Chem weapon place...

when your objective.....

you ask yourself....about a fertilzer plant... Is it a Demolition plant, a explosive development lab, a Chemical lab, a biochemical development lab...or is it just a Fertilizer plant?

Fertilizer isn't considered a WMD.

Not to pick nits, but tell that one to the people of OK City.

I know nothing's been confirmed, but I tend to think that there's SOMETHING there, or at least, something was there until recently. The fact that they captured some troops and a general there is weighing on my mind. I could be completely naive, but I just don't quite see a group of troops and a GENERAL hanging around a harmless facility.

I figured someone would mention that, but it doesn't change the fact that Fertilizer isn't recognized as a damn WMD.

Anyway BBC news radio is carrying the story.

Spoke to a journo IN THE PENTAGON BRIEFING CENTER.

Another journo IN QATAR.

Another guy who was A CHEMICAL WEAPONS SPECIALIST AND FORMER UN INSPECTOR.

All 3 of these said the same thing.

It is a factory, with chemicals. This could mean anything from fertilizer to washing up liquid to shoe polish.

The Pentagon say "they are investigating".

Qatar says "they are investigating".

Those people announcing "HUGE CHEMICAL WEAPONS HOARDE CAPTURED WITH GENERAL IN THE ACT OF FILLING A SCUD MISSILE WARHEAD WITH "TO WASHINGTON, EXPRESS" STENCILLED ON THE SIDE IN ARABIC", need to apply for a job at Fux (it up) News.

Geez did you even read my post, or just pick out what you wanted? I said that processing plants can be dual purpose plants, able to create more than just peaceful products. Nuclear plants can create the type of plutonium (-238 I believe it is) that can be used in nuclear weapons along with nuclear power. Plants that create insecticides can, with modifications, be used to create chemical weapons. Shit, that's what the earliest chemical weapons were supposed to be until some sick bastard figured out they they could poison troops with them. I for one would be more than willing to believe that Saddam would camoflage a chemical or biological weapons plant under a more benign auspice.

It's all like The Force, it's got a light side and a dark side (woo hoo for a random Star Wars reference).

BTW No one's answered a simple question. Why was this plant camoflaged, surrounded by an electric fence, had a substantial security force (at least 30 people) and had 2 generals on site?

I think that kinda proves that this is probably more than your run-of-the-mill fertilizer plant.

and I understand that the UN had no idea that this place even existed. Can the sign-guys screaming 'peace' please quiet down now and stop defending these fucking retards.

I saw a peacenik on tv awhile back, he was asked if war was ever right. "yes" "when?" "hmmm...id say Castro in Cuba" Smart, smart people here.

a 30 man security team isn't too ridiculous for a chemical plant of that size. Hell, I work in a modest-sized warehouse, and we've got 8 or 10 guards. Barbed wire, too.

I personally think the plant was probably being used to make weapons, but there's definitely some doubt there.
