Guest DrTom Report post Posted March 28, 2003 Not true. A few of the independant studies, which recounted all of Florida (as opposed to the requested counties by the dems), had Gore winning by a few percentage points. I was actually referring back to the three newspaper recounts I had mentioned just before that. I'll leave it there, since this isn't the topic of the thread, but I just wanted to clarify that. Guest Crazy Dan Report post Posted March 28, 2003 "And let us not forget Florida Sec. of State Katherine Harris [in the 2000 Presidential election]. Within days of the election, Governor Jeb recused himself to avoid the 'perception' of a conflict of interest. At that point, Harris became the single most important member of the Florida executive branch as far as the election was concerned: she had the sole authority to certify the winner. Harris herself had overwhelming grounds for recusal. Not only did she co-chair the Bush 2000 campaign in Florida, but it was well-known that she was under serious consideration for a cushy ambassadorial post in Europe...... In June, between 8,000 and 12,000 Florida voters were wrongly purged from the voting rolls as felons. The Florida State Government uses an outside contractor [a subsidiary of ChoicePoint Inc] to vet their voter rolls; it is the only state to do so.... Curiously, it turned out ChoicePoint had obtained this false list of 'felons' from the state of Texas. 27 Yes, Texas.... Curiouser and curiouser, it turns out that ChoicePoint is closely tied to the Republican Party, and that its top executives and board members include many high-dollar donors..... There are further signs that Republican operatives played a covert role in advance work to jimmy the Florida election. Xavier Suarez, the very same 'mayor' of Miami who was thrown from office because of massive voter-fraud in the infamous 1997 election, worked for the Republicans on the 2000 presidential election.... This is profoundly shocking to anyone who knows that Suarez was found guilt of illegally tampering with some 5,000 absentee ballots in the 1997 election. Indeed, absentee ballots had put Suarez over the top in the election when he 'won' twice as many as his rival....When Katherine Harris certified the Florida [2000 Presidential] vote the Sunday after Thanksgiving, she illegally closed off the state Capitol from the press and public. When a few reporters managed to get in with the help of a state employee, Harris tried to have them all arrested. As the Miami Herald related, the reporters 'had to call lawyers to stay in a public building even while state business was being conducted.' 79 While attorneys and security officers squabbled, Harris unilaterally disqualified most of the recounts that had been mandated and sanctioned by the Florida courts....." COUP 2K by JOHN DEE Published in Lumpen, Jan. 2001 I just had to include this. Michael Moore also wrote about this in his book "Stupid White Men". Say what you want about him, and you are more than entitled to. What went down in Florida is very fishy to me. And Harris should be thrown in jail. Officially, Bush did win, he is our President. But time I think will tell a different story.
Guest NoCalMike Report post Posted March 28, 2003 Damn Crazy Dan, that is the most in depth conspiracy theory I have heard of yet regarding the 2000 elections. I wonder how many years will go bye until that scenario is looked into further.
Guest Crazy Dan Report post Posted March 28, 2003 I don't know how true it is... I just thought it was an interesting read. If anyone can debunk this, please do. Regardless, time will tell how clean or dirty the election of 2000 really was.
Guest DrTom Report post Posted March 28, 2003 That's an interesting conspiracy theory, but it uses a lot of circumstancial "evidence," a few jumped-to conclusions, and several post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacies. Furthermore, the article makes the point that the Republicans conspired to steal Florida before the election. Why Florida, though? Wouldn't they go after a state like California, with more electoral votes, and leave the governor of Florida to campaign on behalf of his brother? This just seems like a case of retrofitting a few incidents to fit the result.
Guest TheMikeSC Report post Posted March 28, 2003 You know, I'm all about scoreboard being scoreboard, and yeah, maybe bush did WIN the election, but he wasn't exactly the choice of the people. I still think the electorial college is a fairly interesting concept. Candidates don't run to win the popular vote. They run to win the electoral vote. Bush won that. The popular vote is irrelevant. As to why there is a electoral college --- it limits corruption. Back in the good ol' days, the Chicago Democratic machine could only screw with the electoral votes of Illinois --- they couldn't really impact the ENTIRE election. -=Mike
Guest TheMikeSC Report post Posted March 28, 2003 It was a close race no doubt. However, he lost the popular vote. Would you still say that he was the choice of the people, or is it that he's the choice of the people that matter, mainly a republican dominated supreme court? Again, the popular vote doesn't matter. At all. Bush was the choice of the people. The Supreme Court simply stopped the Florida Supreme Court (who has gotten one heckuva pass in all of this) from re-writing election law after the fact. -=Mike
Guest TheMikeSC Report post Posted March 28, 2003 You have to be a REALLY big jerk to get Hollywood to boo an anti-Republican, anti-war speech. -=Mike Too be honest I thought he was being booed for bringing a hefty dose of reality to the Oscar's, how dare this man interrupt our mastebatory Holywood love fest. Personaly, I was just annoyed that Peter O'Toole didn't get blind drunk and go on a rant when he was giving his Oscar. Hollywood loves nothing more than to make people think they actually THINK there. They booed Moore because he is a jerk. -=Mike
