Guest WrestlingDeacon Report post Posted March 26, 2003 It's well acted, well shot and the fight scenes are beyond brutal. I can't think of a reason NOT to recommend it. I'm not sure what extras the DVD would have, but any running commentary would be gold and background fill in on Jake LaMotta might help to interest you a bit more in his story. Guest godthedog Report post Posted March 26, 2003 buy it now. my personal favorite scorsese movie, best movie of the 80s, easily one of the top five or ten american movies ever made. everything is clicking, and everybody's working on all cylinders: scorsese never approached anything with that kind of vision or energy again, de niro gave the best performance of his entire career (with pesci not far behind), the writing is pitch-perfect, the characters are dense & complex, the fight scenes (from a technical standpoint) are unbelievable. i absolutely love the dialogue, it makes the whole thing feel so real. schrader's writing + de niro & pesci's improvising + scorsese's directing = pure inspiration. i cannot praise it enough. Â criterion better come out with a version of it sometime. the laserdisc is an awesome 4-disc set that has stuff like commentary, old fight footage of la motta, the screenplay & footage from movies that scorsese took inspiration from, and i don't think the dvd has any of that.
