Guest NoCalMike Report post Posted March 26, 2003 ::~SPOILERS~:: ::~SPOILERS~:: ::~SPOILERS~:: Ok first off, normally chick flicks like these are AVOIDED AT ALL COSTS by me, but I like Nicolas Cage and I was bored one night and HBO was playing The Family Man. Firstly, this movie had an appeal to me, not sure why, but I felt the performances by Cage and Leoni were pretty damn good. I have 2 big issues with it. First, did Jack(Cage) not understand fully that this was ONLY A GLIMPSE? I mean when he was propositioned to have an affair with that one lady in the bowling alley, why the hell not do it? Unless the viewers were supposed to be under the impression that it "felt so real to Jack"(The alternate life I mean). But he himself when his buddy told him not to and told him about the rules, said...."Those rules don't apply to me, I can't explain why, but they don't" So what the hell, bag the lady. And then there is the ENDING, I was ALMOST fooled into believing they would NOT go the typical hollywood route and have them end up together(even though it was only eluded), however I fell for it, and was let down when his speech about "we are married, have 2 kids.....etc" worked, when in real life she would have looked at him like he was a nutcase and probably called for security. I think Men hate these movies is because they are so OBVIOUSLY made for the female emotion engine. Kind of like why "most" women hate popcorn action flicks because they are made for our emotional engine. I dunno, I still like the movie somewhat, but the ending to me was just a total copout. I was listening to a radio show and the guys were talking about how these chick flicks are ruining men's lives because they set up these unreal expections for women(thinking of how much better their men should be). They watch these movies and buy into the falacy that with a little love and romance...MAGIC HAPPENS, when that is the biggest croq ever. I mean don't ask me how the hell "Jack" afforded that house being a tire salesman and his wife being a NON-PROFIT lawyer.....oh well....comments?
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted March 26, 2003 Oddly enough I don't really have any great hate for "chick flicks". Well ok I don't like them if they're overly sappy or if it's simply a shitty movie. I don't hate any genre, because they all have at least some good movies. I hate shitty movies period. Guest starvenger Report post Posted March 26, 2003 I actually liked this movie as well, it wasn't particularly bad as far as some romantic comedies go. Tea Leoni was probably a large factor in this - she's cute and has a goofy charm that makes her fun to watch. The most surprising thing about this movie? The director, Brett Ratner. Who knew he could direct a romantic comedy - with Nic Cage as the lead - and make it work?
Guest MDH257 Report post Posted March 26, 2003 The movie lost me when Nic Cage does exactly what I would have done in that situation. He goes to New York and gets his old job back. Therefore he gets to have both the family and the fabulous New York life. Instead, Tea Leoni gives some speech about how it would be so much better to stay in the subburbs and guilt trips Cage into giving it all up again.

I mean it would have been one thing if she was happy, yet concerned, but she was 100% NON-SUPPORTIVE of the decision. Nicolas Cage was fucked in that movie because when he got the "glimpse" it was like he was ALREADY SUPPOSED TO KNOW how the previous 13 years of marriage went down. So whenever he would make a false move, he had to feel stupid because he was a totally different person.
Guest Mole Report post Posted March 27, 2003 This movie was alright. I kind of liked the ending because it fit the whole movie. I wouldn't call it a Hollywood ending because the whole point of the glimpse was to show him what he could of had. He loved it, and reliezed he made a mistake. So he went to her, and started shit up again, that way he might be really happy in life. Just a thought.
