Guest T®ITEC Report post Posted March 30, 2003 Generally, it cleans up everything and helps it run faster. I defragment mine like once a month.
Guest DrTom Report post Posted March 30, 2003 Basically, it makes sure your files are stored in continuous blocks on the hard drive. As files and programs are moved, added, and deleted, things get out of order. A file that resides in blocks 5000-5025, say, could end up in 5000, 5010-5020, and 5087-5092. Defrag (and 2000/XP's DiskKeeper) put everything back in the proper order. It tends to improve drive performance and increase free space.
