A little help, please.

Guest Kibagami

A girl I know has requested a mix CD of "indie music" that will "broaden her horizons". While I am tempted to just make a mix of Common Rider and Big Black because I happen to like them, I know this is not fair. She's currently into Dave Matthews, Counting Crows, the Pixies, Incubus, blah blah blah.

Hit me with your best suggestions.

K.

Lately I've been putting these songs on my indie-ish mixes

Mission of Burma - "that's when I reach for my revolver"

Pere Ubu - "Final Solution"

Mosest Mouse "3rd Planet"

Guided By Voices "Tractor Rape Chain"

Grandaddy "Am 180" or "Summer Here Kids"

Dismemberment plan "gyroscope"

Clinic "Distortions"

Jets to Brazil "Sweet Avenue"

Yo la tengo "cherry chapstick"

Death cab for cutie "bend to squares"

Liz Phair "Fuck and Run"

Big Black "deep 6"

Neutral Milk Hotel "King of Carrot flowers pts 2-3"

probably some other stuff I can't think of now, I always run out of space and have to cut stuff.

And I don't think I've ever made a mix w/o something by the pixies on it.

Built to Spill--"Nowhere Nothin' Fuckup"

Wilco--"She's a Jar"

Velvet Underground--"Venus in Furs"

Sparklehorse--"Maria's Little Elbows"

Tom Waits--"I Don't Wanna Grow Up"

XTC--"Complicated Game"

Elvis Costello--"Beyond Belief"

Sonic Youth--"Silver Rocket"

The VU should be a standard inclusion on any introductory mix, and the rest are songs that made it into the last mix I made. It turned out well.

Sonic Youth--"Silver Rocket"

Yeah, that's probably my favorite Sonic Youth song for mix purposes.

In terms of more recent stuff, I'd recommend any of the first seven songs off of the new Delagados album and "free" or "he war" off of the new cat power. I also think some of Zappa's quirky non-jazz-rock stuff could work pretty nicely on a mix, but I'm not yet familiar enough with any of his albums to give a solid recommendation.

"Silver Rocket" is perfect for that kind of thing--it has an appealing punk energy, with that blast of feedback midway through. It summarizes SY when they were at the top of their game, and all in under four minutes. "Teen Age Riot" is the better song, though.

The most recent thing I put on this particular mix--made about a month ago--was "Apistat Commander," by Xiu Xiu. It's on their A Promise album, and, while I have mixed feelings about the record, that song is fucking amazing.

while i applaud your efforts in turning this girl onto new music, i think you should be a little subtle in your approach in terms of what you introduce to her.

inc and LC should be applauded for theiur efforts in opening the doors to the 'indy' scene but if this chick is not familiar with indie rock ,you may want to tun her onto some more commercial friendly songs from the very same bands.

hey i dig 'fuck and run' like the next guy but 'supernova' may be the best route.

For EC, start with 'Accidents will Happen' or 'Less than Zero" then work up to less popular EC.

For Sonic Youth, there is a nice edited version of "the Diamond Sea' that could appeal to new listeners.

GBV- 'Hold on Hope'

Sparklehorse- "Someday I will treat you good"

They have the right artists but I think a more pop-friendly path would help ease them into their experience before throwing down multi-layered walls of sound and noise.

Heh. That was my idea of friendly. My mix-making is a little rusty, granted--that one from a month ago was the first one I did in almost two years--but it turned out well.

I kinda forgot this was for a girl with some of those. But I still maintain that "fuck and run" or maybe "divorce song" is the way to go with Liz Phair. I don't think they're unaccessible at all. And they're definitely the songs I'd use to convince someone that they should give her a listen.

the key to "fuck and run" is how well kibagami knows this chick and if he plans on making advances in the future. he might scare her off with a song entitled "fuck and run". if it's platonic, i won't argue your point.

More friendly than 'complicated game' would be something from the XTC album 'Go 2'. Perhaps 'crowded room' or 'red' or 'I am the audience'. What a good, fun album that is. Yes. Better than some of the later stuff, methinks. Ahem.*

*still loves Inc really, but isn't about to let this one go.

I've been listening to "Fuck and Run" all morning after reading this thread. What other Liz Phair songs would I like, aside from "Supernova" and "Divorce Song"?

I'm not sure what else to recommend individually, but maybe give Exile in Guyville a listen and see for yourself which songs you like and if you'd be interested in exploring her other albums. Nevertheless, these are some of the other songs I personally like.

"Help me, mary"

"canary"

"shatter"

"flower"

"stratford on guy"

"strange loop"

"girls' room"

"polyester bride"

"what makes you happy"

"shitloads of money"

And I'm not that familiar with whipsmart, but "may queen" always stuck out for me off of that one.

Anything on Exile in Guyville is great, Areacode. "Never Said" is one of the catchier ones, and anyone checking out Liz Phair owes it to themself to investigate "Flower," which is...interesting.
