Classic japanese matches

I'm looking for some of your fond memories of all matches puro.  I'm only kind of a casual follower so I can't really contribute too much, but even as a casual follower I really enjoyed the 1992 G1 Climax, even if Chono-Rude becomes difficult to follow after five hours of viewing something you can't understand.  The Chono-Muta match in the semis made the entire tape worthwhile for me.

Anybody want to contribute?  And serious posts only, please.

Well, the first thing that comes to mind for me is the Great Sasuke vs. Pegasus Kid match to finish the '94 J-Cup.  I know that it is probably a popular choice, but it is one of the first great matches I watched.  It also helps that I am a huge Benoit and Sasuke mark.  Another fave would be the Kawada vs. Misawa series.  Yeah, there's lots of no-selling, but the psychology is so great it overshadows everything else.  This is my second favorite rivalry of all time, although if Kawada had won more matches it would have been better.  My favorite rivalry is the next set of matches, Tiger Mask (Sayama) vs. Dynamite Kid.  This was such great wrestling, even by today's standards, and it was done in the early 80s!  These two were so far ahead of there time, and juniors wrestling would be years behind where it is now if it weren't for Billington and Sayama revolutionizing things when they did.  The New Japan Jr. Tag League (held in '94 I believe) has several great Sasuke/Black Tiger (Guerrero) vs. Benoit/Ohtani matches.  The heat between these  two teams was so intense, and with these 4 guys, the wrestling just had to be great.  There's plenty more, those are really common puro favorites.  I'll post some later...

Just as an aside, I tried to watch my first ever tape of puroresu, the Super J Cup 94, all the way through without stopping the first time and it ended up boring me to death. Later, I re-watched it in bits and i loved it to death. Conclusion - watch puroresu in bitesize chunks, not a whole tape at a time, at least before you really get into it deeply.

yeah, this is something I need as well, but my question is where do you find matches in their entirity.  I've ordered a couple tapes, various comps and what not and a lot of the matches are clipped.  This is no good for anything but spot fests.

If you want to get into the psychology where can you go for the entire matches?  I really want to check out the Kawada vs. Misawa series but like before, most everything I see available is clipped so I haven't ordered any.

Regarding Misawa vs. Kawada.  All of their matches from 10/92 on are available in complete form with the exception of the Carny 96 and 98 match.  You just have to look.  For example:

Misawa vs. Kawada 10/21/92--Available complete on Misawa Path to Becoming the Five Crown King Vol. 5

Misawa vs. Kawada 3/27/93--Available complete on (I believe) the 4/4/93 TV show.

Misawa vs. Kawada 7/29/93--Available complete on Misawa Memorial Fight Vol. 2

Misawa vs. Kawada 4/11/94--Available complete on the 1994 Champion Carnival Vol. 2 comm tape.

Misawa vs. Kawada 6/3/94--Available complete on Misawa vs. Kawada 6/3/94 comm. tape.

Misawa vs. Kawada 4/6/95--Available complete on 1995 Champion Carnival Vol. 3 comm tape.

Misawa vs. Kawada 7/24/95--Available complete on AJPW 7/24/95 comm tape.

Misawa vs. Kawada 4/14/96--Only show in JIP form on TV

Misawa vs. Kawada 3/30/97--Available complete on Samurai TV from 3/97

Misawa vs. Kawada 4/19/97--Available complete on 1997 Champion Carnival comm. tape

Misawa vs. Kawada 6/6/97--Available complete on Super Power Series 1997 comm. tape

Misawa vs. Kawada 3/28/98--Only shown in JIP form on TV

Misawa vs. Kawada 5/1/98--Available complete on AJPW 5/1/98 Tokyo Dome Vol. 1 comm.

Misawa vs. Kawada 1/22/99--Available complete on New Year's Giant Series 1999 comm.

Misawa vs. Kawada 7/23/99--Available complete on Summer Action Series I 1999 comm. tape

Misawa vs. Kawada 3/31/00--Available complete on 2000 Champion Carnival comm. tape.

One more note.  The 3/98 match MAY be available complete on Samurai TV, but I'm not sure.

BTW, if you haven't seen these matches, obviously, I'd highly recommend them (except for perhaps the 4/97 6 minute mess).  Anyway, if you start at the beginning, trust me, you'll enjoy it more.  I started right at 6/3/94, because everyone said it was the best, and it didn't strike me that well the first time.  Then as I started getting more footage, I started appreciating it a lot more.

many thanks for the info.  That's all I'm asking is just to expand on the topic a bit.

Why are the matches so good?

Where were they, what was the build up, the fued or story if any?

Where can I find them

etc...

Just gotta keep digging I guess, every bit is definitely welcomed.

"Why are the matches so good?"

Why are the Flair vs. Steamboat 1989 matches so good?  It's the same type of question.  They were the two best workers in the world wrestling each other during many of their matches.  Stiffness, heat, drama, moves, story, everything that makes a pro wrestling match great is what the best Misawa-Kawada matches are all about.

"Where were they,"

Most of them take place in Tokyo, at Budokan Hall, the All Japan homebase for many years.

"what was the build up, the fued or story if any?"

That question is much too involved to get into.  The backstory of this feud is much more complicated because to really appreciate the matches, you've got to know pieces of it, unlike, say, Misawa-Kobashi 1/20/97, where there's tons of awesome moves, and it's very easy to get into.

"Where can I find them"

Take a look at the "READ AND DON'T FORGET" post over here.  It has a list of reputable tape dealers in there.
