Misawa Kawada 94

Misawa's last comeback is the one thing that I can annoying some. Very simply though, Misawa is the man. It was do or die and on 6/3/94, it wasn't time for him to die yet.

Some of Misawa's superman comebacks have bothered me in the past (particularly toward the end of the decade) but I loved this one. It worked because the home stretch was basically an educated brawl. They're able to work the comeback off a quid pro quo of strikes and still sell the tole of the match. This was the cross roads and Kawada was clearly running out of gas. Its your classic 'champ sucks it up and seizes control'. I especially liked the last desperation koppo kick by Kawada that was blocked by Misawa. It's not a crisp looking sequence at all very rough in fact. But it looks organic to the match at hand, a struggle coming to an end. And the last flurry of elbows before M drops the Big One are just brutal. What a finish.

Its funny I dont think I've watched this match in over two years but I remember these notes by heart. Thats a great match for you.

And am I the only one that really digs Misawa's understated neck selling? :)

The last Koppo Kick was indeed a sweet touch. It was the move that Kawada relied on so much to change the momentum of a match when he was in trouble, and him sloppily firing it off out of nowhere was his final attempt to take control back, but this time he had nothing left.

I also think Misawa did a good job of selling the neck, I mean how else can you sell the neck. Pull a Terry Funk and hop up and down on one leg with your head tilted like you got water in your ear.

And about the corner that alot of people tend to have a problem with, Misawa started blocking the kicks before he rose up, and he didn't take that many to begin with. It's not like he just started shaking them off after taking 10 straight kicks or something.

Have to say this is an excellent thread.

One of you guys should do a comp of all the matches leading to this one; Tsuruta/Tenryu, Misawa/Tsuruta, previous Kawada/Misawa's, Hansen/Misawa, Gordy/Misawa, Williams/Kawada etc.

I probably have a lot of them, but as said in this thread, if you haven't seen them all, you're missing out.

Anyone willing to make a comp ?
