Guest Jobber of the Week Report post Posted April 3, 2003 Oh my God, you guys who have it MUST unlock Roughneck real quick. He is basicly a flaming redneck, complete with confederate beltbuckle and all. The best part however... ...he sounds EXACTLY like Jammie Knoble, lol. Wow, not stereotypical at all, huh? This game lacks the turnbuckle finisher and create a character of the WWF games, but it makes it up for it with the bitch fights, crazy special moves, and playing to "Party Up." This is to No Mercy what Perfect Dark was to Goldeneye in my opinion. Kinda the same thing, but....
Guest Blackston Report post Posted April 4, 2003 Just simply a beautiful game. I'm not into rap at all, but this game is hella fun to play. If you liked No Mercy and WM 2000, then you owe it to yourself to try this game out at some point. I understand the reservations about the rap license, but seriously, the game more then makes up for any shortcomings that you may have with Def Jam.
Guest pinnacleofallthingsmanly Report post Posted April 6, 2003 I was forced to play the game by one of my roommates and I give it my seal of approval. I wish the game had more match types, but it's still cool with me.
Guest El Psycho Diablo Report post Posted April 6, 2003 Sounds neat..but.. No CAW, no buy.
Guest Slapnuts00 Report post Posted April 6, 2003 I rented it, fun game! Its like a combination of a wrestling and fighting game, I enjoy it. It's frustrating though because I'll get blazing and it wont knock out the computer and then the computer will power up and beat me silly, takes me a few times to beat some of these guys. Otherwise I like it, adding attributes to your characters is a fun option and marking out when you see some moves like dragon suplexes and super brainbusters is fun (I like the names they give moves too, like the aptly titled "Kick to the junk".) The arenas remind me of the old In Your House game for the PS1 with mansions and junkyards and such with people standing around the ring cheering. I say everyone should give it a rent at least. Even if you dont like rap (and have only heard of a couple of these guys), most of the characters are made up anyway, the storylines is pretty fun (like picking which chicks you want fighting for you), and the rap tracks aren't too bad, in fact when you're wrestling its just the beats with no words. I'd like to see if they make a new one, an option to add/select which moves you want to give your fighter, a CAW and some weapons and blood. It'd be fun to get hardcore on some of these guys. To get the blazing to work properly for the KO, the opponent MUST have their health in reading Danger consistently and you'll nail them. BTW, I love Brigg's front grapple finisher. It's sucha sweet ass Vertebraker.
Guest pinnacleofallthingsmanly Report post Posted April 6, 2003 The lack of CAW didn't really bother me because this game felt somewhat like a fighting game. I suppose you have to leave some stuff for a sequel.
Guest Crucifixio Jones Report post Posted April 9, 2003 People need to get over two major things: 1. The Def Jam name, rappers, license, slang (I can't believe someone was actually concerned or thought they'd be annoyed by this) or any other reservations you have about urban culture - OMG He said DAWG~! BN PLZ~!!!!! So what? There's only two white guys in the game? So what? How many famous white rappers do you know or that would do the things that the guys do in this game. It's just a reflection of reality and apparently a correct one since so many of you act worse than homophobes where it concerns rap music. "RAP ARGH! CANNOT...BUY....IT SUXX0rZ!" Get over it. How many fighting games are steeped in Oriental culture? I don't see anyone complaining about that or afraid that they won't "get it", same rules should apply here. You should be happy that a culture that IS represented on these shores finally got a decent video game translation. And the music in nearly all fighting games SUCKS. Whether it's rap or rock, I wouldn't care as long as the music is condusive to the fighting element and the REAL music here does that. Who sings/raps it or what color they are should not matter. I tend not to enjoy the majority of the music WWE uses for their PPVs and video packages, but if it works, it works. Here, the music works. 2. The lack of a CAW or other wrestling game features - Vendetta isn't really a wrestling game per se. So while a CAW would've been nice, its exclusion doesn't really bother me. Like someone before said, Tekken, Mortal Kombat and SF don't have CAW's and it's never been a problem, so why here? This is more like a fighting game that takes place in underground clubs in "rings" and they guys are supposed to be street fighting, they just happen to use these WAY over-the-top wrestling moves. It's very much like Ultimate Muscle that way. So once you remove the rap stigma (or whatever rap-related reservations you happen to fear) and stop looking for a pure rasslin game just because it has the same developers and gameplay you might figure out that the game is fun as HELL and enjoy it. The finishers are INSANE, the rappers are funny and the story mode (especially picking up new girlfriends) is better than whatever else is available currently in the genre. Overall, I'd give DJV a 8.5/
Guest CED Ordonez Report post Posted April 9, 2003 I agree with CJ. It's the No Mercy engine we've been bitching about being M.I.A. since the heyday of the N64. The fighting engine is back for the most part so I'm reserving a spot right here for my opinion as soon as I pick it up as a rental.
Guest Jobber of the Week Report post Posted April 9, 2003 It's just a reflection of reality and apparently a correct one since so many of you act worse than homophobes where it concerns rap music. "RAP ARGH! CANNOT...BUY....IT SUXX0rZ!" You're being an asshole and whining about this is about as effective as me telling you that you're stupid if you don't like Thai food. Music is a taste. Some people have different tastes than others. Thus, those who don't have the taste for rap could be leery. It's a valid issue, get over it. You don't see people saying "I don't like Star Wars movies, will I like this Star Wars game?" This game isn't THAT deep in it's license, but it still is marketed as some kind of love letter from a rap group to it's fans, and thus those who are drawn to it purely for it's fighting engine will be skeptical. Guest Downhome Report post Posted April 9, 2003 I don't see what the big deal is about the rap also. I hate rap for the most part, but it doesn't bother me. There are a few reasons for this... 1) Durring matches, the songs are only the music, meaning no vocals are present for the most part, so it's basicly like a background music you would hear in various other games. 2) Durring matches, you can turn the music TOTALLY off, leaving only the sound effects of the match. I do this quite a bit, and just play whatever the hell type of music I want to hear, lol. ...it's not a valid reason to TOTALY dismiss this game, because it's not really an issue at all when you are actually playing it. Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Report post Posted April 9, 2003 I bet if I started a thread about rap in the OAOAST forum CJ would seek it out and put down everyone's opinion but his.
Guest Crucifixio Jones Report post Posted April 9, 2003 I bet if I gave a fuck about what in the hell a OAOAST was or even who BPS is, I'd respond. But since I don't, this'll have to do: BPS All I'm saying is that one's distaste for a certain culture shouldn't sway them from buying what is a fun game. I never knocked anyone's taste. I never said anyone was stupid or whined because they don't like rap music. I could honestly care less. But it seems silly that someone would turn away from this game because of his/hers taste in music and base their like/dislike of the game on that music's inclusion. That an ignorant attitude REGARDLESS of what music you like. And I certainly don't see how it's being marketed as some "love letter", but I'm sure that's how white America may see it. I'm sorry middle America is so afraid of something different that they can't enjoy something that contains even minor elements of it. I don't care what kind of music you listen to or if you make sweeping statements like "rap is crap." Just shows your ignorance not mine. I don't put a game back on the shelf because it may have a rock music soundtrack and I don't happen to enjoy that genre. I'm not that narrow-minded. Unfortunately, a lot of people here have shown on numerous occasions that they are. Music is such a small part of the overall package here, so why are people even attempting to make it an issue? Fear. Of what I don't know. DMX isn't coming to your house or gonna date your daughter, so just pick up the game and play it. It'd be boss even with NO music. Guest Crucifixio Jones Report post Posted April 10, 2003 Hey CJ, your record is broken. I think that's BPS' cute way of ignoring my points but still managing another pathetic attempt at a "witty" personal attack. Grade A choice for a moderator and a true representative of TSM. Kudos. Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Report post Posted April 10, 2003 Well that one hurts. I hate receiving criticism from someone so intregal to the board. 313 posts about porn or why everyone is wrong about rap... I better resign and turn the reigns over to you and your illustrious wisdom.
Guest Crucifixio Jones Report post Posted April 10, 2003 And your area of specialty is...??? Lemme guess: scathing humor and cynical retorts? and the majority of my posts are in the movies folder, thank you very much. Don't try to boil me down into one sentence, pal; you're only selling yourself short and showing what a weak observer you really are. Get your cock off hard for me; I never said anything to you. Don't hate, congratulate, oh-so integral Mod God. Tell ya what? I'll give you a quarter if you can make an even halfway truthful assumption about me from here on out. Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Report post Posted April 10, 2003 I can sum you up in one sentence quite easily CJ. Even if someone has the same opinion as you do you will still bitch about it unless it is worded and spelled the same way. For there is only one truth in the world and it is yours. Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Report post Posted April 10, 2003 BTW...I find it pretty funny and telling that you go around trying to point out that moderators are no big shit...and yet can't reply to one without mentioning there mod status. What's that all about?
Guest Crucifixio Jones Report post Posted April 10, 2003 Well, I know a little truth about you, too. Aren't you the same guy who basically lobbied long and hard to be a mod at WDI (that's why I point it out to YOU and you're the only I have pointed it out to since you're the only one who thinks its some privelage that makes you special somehow) and left like a bitch when they didn't make you one and cried constantly like a punk with a skinned knee because you wanted me banned there? I see the hate still lingers. Get a hobby OTHER THAN worrying about posters on a messageboard, their likes, dislikes and posting habits. And I don't see where debate and feeling strongly about your own opinion is a bad thing. I thought that's what DISCUSSION boards were for. And you are chastising me why? At what point did someone ask for BPS' opinion of CJ...oh that's right: NEVER. Just like at WDI.
Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Report post Posted April 10, 2003 I was a mod at WDI...so you're only half right. I guess I owe you a quarter.
Guest Crucifixio Jones Report post Posted April 10, 2003 I know you were a mod at WDI, after much bitching, complaining, crying and posts about wanting to be one. Self-esteem issues anyone? At any rate, I don't have any more time or patience to go round and round with the same guy who still after all this time has nothing better to do than pick me out of a crowd and feels its his duty to inform everyone how evil me and my opinions are and how "witty" you can say it. Go moderate.
