Guest Joe_G Report post Posted April 2, 2003 I forgot this was coming out until I saw it Friday in Media Play during lunch. I held off buying it until I went to Best Buy that night, because (a) I knew I could get it cheaper, and (b) I had a $15 Gift Card lying around I hadn’t used yet. I’ve been a fan of the show for years, which isn’t easy, considering that Fox treats it like an unwelcome stepchild (Funny story: When I brought the set to the checkout counter, the cashier looked at it and said “Hey, I remember this show.” “It’s still on the air,” I replied. She looked at my quizzically: “Really?”). Collected are the first 13 episodes, from “Space Pilot 3000” to “Fry and the Slurm Factory.” I liked the first season but throught the show improved greatly later on. But when I revisited these episodes, they were a lot funnier than I remembered, especially “Fear of a Bot Planet” and “Hell is Other Robots.” Extras include a featurette so thin I don’t know why they bothered to include it, some deleted scenes which are nice but nothing earth shattering, and the commentaries for each ep, which are GOLD. It’s usually Matt Groening, David Cohen, the writer, director, maybe the 3-D artist, and either Billy West or John DiMaggio. It sounds like too many cooks, but these are really some of the best commentaries I’ve heard. They cover everything from animation techniques and original plots to goofy tangeants like how to burp like Bender and why David Cohen changed his middle initial from X to S. The whole thing comes in a nice package with lots of original artwork. Can’t wait for future seasons to be released. I want “Luck of the Fryrish” on DVD really badly.
