And he was a heavyweight who stood up to Don "Mr Evil" King...

As for Butterbean, the guy can fight. Did anyone catch him pounding on Johnny Knoxville in "JackAss: the Movie"? My goodness, it was an ass kicking of the highest order, which sent Knoxville to the hospital. Of course that is not saying much, but it was still like a car wreck, you know it's not going to be pretty, but you still end up looking regardless of the damage done.

He did fake committing suicide a few months ago, so maybe you're right.

holmes in the 5 best heavyweights ever?

mine in no order:

Ali

Marciano

Frazier

Louis

Foreman.

He wouldn't make mine, but he'd definitely be in the top ten were I to continue it. So would Tyson. Past that, I'd have to think about it more deeply.

Butterbean can hit people hard, that's about it. He's a solid enough boxer to get by, and can take some punishment. His conditioning is abominable, and he's slower than molasses. He also almost never fights beyond 4 rounds, and doesn't fight any world class opponents. When he does, he loses.

Butterbean can FIGHT, but he can't BOX. Knoxville was also giving up close to 200 pounds, and isn't a professional prizefighter. There's no way he wasn't going to get thumped.

Just proving that Butterbean could not make it against a real boxer...even a real washed up boxer.

I heard the fight was just about the most boring thing ever.

mine in no order:

Ali

Marciano

Frazier

Louis

Foreman.

Yes...mine(this list tends to change regularly in order)

5.Mike Tyson - makes my top 5 as imo he was capable of knocking anyone out at anytime at his prime condition. Also defeated an impressive, underrated imo, list of fighters; Pinklon Thomas, Tony Tucker, Tony Tubbs, Frank Bruno, Bonecrusher Smith, Trevor Berbick, Larry Holemes, Mike Spinks and later in his career ran amazing blitzes over Andrew Golota and Lou Savarese among others.

4. Joe Louis - Very dominant champion. Beat a lengthy list of quality opponents; Max Bear, Jimmy Braddock, Max Schmeling, Billy Conn among many many others. Also defended his title more than a few times against 'bums of the month'.

3. Larry Holmes - had the best jab ever imo, good power, and was an unbelievably resilient bastard...hed often get drooped, look to be dead on his feet, but come back to kick ass down the stretch. also gets points for comeback victory of Ray Mercer and solid showing vs. Holyfield

2. Muhammed Ali - Just awesome. Early career dominance, ko power, blinding speed, more charisma than John L Sullivan, epic fights, controversy, and now a near-holy figure in the world. The greatest inside and out of the ring.

1. Rocky Marciano - #1 for one important reason to me, I cant imagine him losing. It never occured professionally and I just cant see it in my head at all either. Maybe Ali or Frazier or Tyson or Lewis or someone would have been able to do it but I just see Rocky pulling out the victory against anybody...somehow.

George Foreman gets honorable mention at #6 for his decent first career and living-miracle of a comeback. Lennox Lewis would also make my top 10.

No Joe Frazier? The best left hook ever, toughness personified, the perfect contrast to Ali..

In any other era, he would've owned the heavyweight division. Ali always overshadowed him though, and Foreman surpassed him when he ran roughshod over the entire division....EXCEPT for Ali.

I can certainly understand the reasoning for Holmes though. He did wield the best jab ever...other than Ali's. Ali's hit more often, since he was faster, it hit ever bit as hard, and was tougher to catch due to the other things he could do in a fight. Holmes really relied on his, and in a way, that great strength was also a weakness.

heres my reasoning for not including Frazier in my top 5...

Ali has to be in obviously, as well as Louis. Marciano is number one. Im a big Holmes mark. Then I put Tyson in at 5, on the weight of his ko power.

I also see a prime Tyson, with Cus in his corner, beating a hypothetically prime Frazier.

Smokin Joe is a legend though, definitly, and his left hook was a work of art. The image of him dropping Ali on his ass remains a classic.

Also, about Holmes jab...I consider it the best because of its mechanics as well as accomplishments. It was a routinely perfect jab. But its the best ever, imo, because of how he used it...setting up his big right hand, pacing, bringing him back from the canvas to retake control, systematically destroying opponents, and the closest any heavy ever came to the perfection of Rocky Marciano.

I know this shouldn't hurt his status too much. But Larry loses points for staying on WAY longer then he should have. When you're fighting BUtterbean cause no one else wants you, its time to hang em up (AGAIN!)

I don't know if I'm remembering this right. But I recalled the heavyweight divison being nothing special when Larry was on top of it.

The quality of opposition during Holmes reign is highly underrated imo.

He defeated Ken Norton in a classic to win the championship. His winning streak then includes Mike Weaver, Earnie Shavers(another good fight), Ali(washed up), Trevor Berbick, Leon Spinks(ko3), Renaldo Snipes, Gerry Cooney, Tex Cobb(cement head), Tim Witherspoon, Bonecrusher Smith, and Truth Williams amongst a few jobbers.

Also, if your taking away points for sticking around too long...I feel thats nullified by his early comeback successes. His win over Ray Mercer was huge at the time, and he nearly came up with the win vs. then champ Holyfield. I also think that he deserved the desicion over Oliver McCall in that title fight(95). After that it starts getting sad, but his close win vs. Mo Harris in '97 does seem more impressive in retrospect.
