Guest Vern Gagne Posted April 6, 2003 Report Posted April 6, 2003 Wasn't sure what forum this topic belonged in. Vince McMahon was a terrible choice. I was just thinking, who do you think the WWE could used to make the payoff worthwhile. I really think it was doomed from the start. The only person with any credibility would of the Milion Dollar Man. Jake the Snake was already a joke.
TheOriginalOrangeGoblin Posted April 6, 2003 Report Posted April 6, 2003 If it was Mick Foley like they wnated, his promos are good enoguh to have made it work.
Guest WrestlingDeacon Posted April 6, 2003 Report Posted April 6, 2003 Foley didn't make any sense. There was history and back story there with Roberts and Dibiase they could have used and I think either choice would have been fine. Both Roberts and Dibiase had flirted with "the dark side" in the past and I think with some good writing they could have it a brilliant angle. Other than that, this was pretty much an Ole Anderson angle where you book yourself into a hole and realize there is no way out.
Guest Choken One Posted April 6, 2003 Report Posted April 6, 2003 Dibiase would had ruled...Jake would be too risky...It seemed they had a great idea...just clueless on how to blow it off..
TheOriginalOrangeGoblin Posted April 6, 2003 Report Posted April 6, 2003 Jake would've been awesoem if he could've stayed clean. DiBiase too but DiBiase can't wrestle a blow off match and was very christian so didn't wnat to be associated with the WWF.
Guest papacita Posted April 6, 2003 Report Posted April 6, 2003 At the time, I wanted Michaels (as revenge for the WMXIV loss to Austin), but that really wouldn't have made much sense given the history between he and Taker. Jake would've been perfect if they could keep him sober.
Guest Vern Gagne Posted April 6, 2003 Report Posted April 6, 2003 Does anyone remember rumors of Vince Russo being the higher power. He was the supposed mastermind behind the WWF.
Guest RedJed Posted April 6, 2003 Report Posted April 6, 2003 Foley as the HP would have been just as bad as Vince IMO........he had feuded with Austin even longer at that point than Vince had when you think about it. I never remembered hearing Russo's name coming up as a possibility just because he never was even considered as an on-screen character in WWE to my recollection. The closest thing he had to one was giving out an award to someone in the middle of the ring I believe. I remember wishing it was Michaels, which would have been a legitimate shock. I also remember that all over the net there was confirmation it was Vince the week before the official unveiling when he revealed himself somewhat in the ring under the hood attacking Austin or something. WWE did a ton of those "who done it, who is it" kind of angles that year, the same month was the who moved the briefcase thing at KOTR, and then a few months later Austin was laid out with a cinder block in a hallway. Neither angle was never really followed up on at all.
Guest RevEvil Posted April 6, 2003 Report Posted April 6, 2003 At least the briefcase angle used subtlety, unlike most wrestling angles.
cawthon777 Posted April 6, 2003 Report Posted April 6, 2003 I read a report written by a fan that was on Raw in late May 99. This was the particular episode where Austin saw the face of the Higher Power but the cloak kept the fans from seeing who it was. Due to Austin's expression and Jim Ross' "Oh my god, you son of a bitch!" commentary - he thought it was Owen Hart and that Owen's fall was part of a storyline LMAO
Guest natholy Posted April 6, 2003 Report Posted April 6, 2003 They basically painted themselves in a corner and by the end of it most people already knew it would either be Vince or Shane... Indeed if it would have been Jake Roberts it would have been brilliant... I always wished it would be Bill Watts (but that wouldn't have worked for mainstream fans, but hey we can live in a fantasy world) coming back to take down Mc Mahon for what he did to pro wrestling .... regards nate holynski

That would have been cool if it was Owen.
Guest Michael Joel Benoit Posted April 6, 2003 Report Posted April 6, 2003 Man, I remember one of my best friends from 5th grade thinking Owen was the Higher Power too. I was really hoping that the HP would be Jake "The Snake" Roberts. Infact I thought I heard Jerry "The King" Lawler whispering either Shane or Jake to J.R. when the Power came out. When it was revealed as Vince...well, let's just say I was MAJORLY disappointed and leave it at that. And I was a mark!
Guest Vern Gagne Posted April 6, 2003 Report Posted April 6, 2003 Jake the Snake couldn't of stayed clean long enough to be the high power. I wonder if they had a clue who the higher power was going to be.
Guest dreamer420 Posted April 6, 2003 Report Posted April 6, 2003 Anyone remember the rumors that it was Mike Tyson too? That would have sucked.
Guest Choken One Posted April 6, 2003 Report Posted April 6, 2003 EVERYONE was rumored...From Jake to Shawn to Vince to Tyson to Regis Philban...
Guest RepoMan Posted April 7, 2003 Report Posted April 7, 2003 Man, I remember one of my best friends from 5th grade thinking Owen was the Higher Power too. I made a joke about that, and got a bunch of shit from my friends, which I deserved.
Guest Choken One Posted April 7, 2003 Report Posted April 7, 2003 No...It was ok to think because it was right after Owen Died so likely you were in denial or U could see WWE doing something like that...
Guest converge241 Posted April 7, 2003 Report Posted April 7, 2003 i was in person at the fleet center for the unveiling (and the Austin CEO announcement and Taker-Show chokeslam for hell) in the bar beforehand and in the arena everyone was buzzing about it here are some of the guesses thrown out: jake roberts kevin sullivan raven mike tyson foley ric flair dibiase owen (yes some dipshit made the same joke i think this ep was the 1st storyline raw after the accident too) austin (that he went crazy and had a split personality) Papa Shango Vincent J McMahon soem of those are stupid some good but no one said Vince because it was unoriginal and stupid because at least some of those stupid but at least a little different there was a large audible groan from the audience when it was Vince. i was really hoping for Jake Roberts . like he cleaned up and all and would be a great talker again
Guest Plushy Al Logan Posted April 7, 2003 Report Posted April 7, 2003 I was wishing it would have been either Dibiase or Sullivan.
Guest converge241 Posted April 7, 2003 Report Posted April 7, 2003 sure they would that audience saw the 96-97 time period where sullivan had the Benoit feud and all..plus hes from Boston and most people know that too so that crowd in boston would have known him..not as well known as some other choices but he wouldnt have got a Who The Hell reaction , IMHO
Guest WhenDanSaysJump Posted April 7, 2003 Report Posted April 7, 2003 Never really realised it at the time, but The Higher Power will go down in history as the Attitude Era's Black Scorpion. Weird.
Guest Choken One Posted April 7, 2003 Report Posted April 7, 2003 Remember The Stalker? NO ONE Had DDP pegged...We were convinced it was Vince again, Unmasked Kane, Jake Roberts...Not DDP.
Guest mw679 Posted April 10, 2003 Report Posted April 10, 2003 I remember that Shane Douglas was one of the rumored people to be the HP. Ahh yes, Vince being the HP was one of the biggest letdowns in WWF/E history, the crowd just deflated after he was revealed, IIRC.
