Guest CED Ordonez Posted April 8, 2003 Report Posted April 8, 2003 Way to spread the religious hate, Mr. Phelps. I just remembered why I gave up on religion for the most part: too many extremists hating everyone else's religion. You shouldn't give up on religion becaue of an extremist nutcase. They're the idiots, not the religion. Bad choice of words. Basically, my philosophy on religion is "Practice but don't preach." I haven't abandoned religion and still live by most of the guidelines and morals of my religion of choice (Catholic, in case you were wondering). I just choose not to speak about religion if possible, especially in an argument. I've had to endure many condescending arguments that use religion as a focal point, such as the one used by Mr. Phelps. Frankly, I'm sick of them, so I avoid all talks of religion whenever I can.
Guest Vern Gagne Posted April 8, 2003 Report Posted April 8, 2003 Ok. I understand. I'm pretty much the same way. I'm a believer but I don't want to force my believes on anyone.
Guest DrTom Posted April 8, 2003 Report Posted April 8, 2003 You shouldn't give up on religion becaue of an extremist nutcase. They're the idiots, not the religion. I disagree. Religion, as a man-made institution, is certainly responsible for the evils and atrocities men commit in its name.
Guest SP-1 Posted April 8, 2003 Report Posted April 8, 2003 In the past, however, in the greater wars fought, it was generally an issue of the powerful church manipulating her people into it. Post-reformation, Christians are encouraged to seek a relationship on their own, not for the church to tell them what to do. Which is, in part, why so many denominations have sprung up, as people have taken a slightly harder or softer slant on the core principles. Which is a very loose view, I admit. My basic point is that even the Bible tells us we're born with free will. Corrupt men are corrupt men. The church often did the corrupting. Which is partly why the reformists broke away.
