Animated GIF's

Recommended Posts

Guest Razor Roman

I have photoshop 7 and a few earlier versions and want to make some Animated GIF's. Apparently it's possible, but I don't know how. I am sick of uninstalling and reinstalling my trial copy of Ulead GIF animator.

Anyone know anything about animated GIFs in Photoshop?

My photoshop 5.5 came with Imageready, which is what I use. I haven't mastered it, but it works OK

I don't know how to use Photoshop, but have you tried looking for a registration code for your other software?

Maybe a keycode or a crack

Ok, so how do I do this in Image Ready? I can't seem to make anything other than an animated GIF consiting of multiple frames of the same image. The online help is USELESS

If you already have a set of GIFs that you'd like to combine into an animated GIF (like say, if you captured a bunch of frames from a game emulator), don't use ImageReady. It's an unbelievably long and tedious process. Use GIF Construction Set instead (it's how I made my current Archon avatar--I first extracted the .smk movie file from the Starcraft data files, converted the movie to a series of GIFs using the RAD Smacker tools, then used GIF Construction Set to combine them).

But if you're making an animated GIF out of a composition you created in Photoshop, then yeah, ImageReady is your best bet. The basic process isn't hard to grasp:

Say you're making a 3-frame animation of a square turning from red to green to blue.

a) make sure each frame is on its own layer, and that layers 2 & 3 are hidden.

- layer 1 (bottom layer) - red square

- layer 2 (above layer 1) - green square

- layer 3 (top layer) - blue

the first frame should be the red square

b) click the new frame button. It duplicates the current frame, so unhide layer 2. The second frame will thus be the green square.

c) click new frame again, then unhide layer 3. You should now have 3 frames: the red square, the green square, then the blue square. Now do Save Optimized As..., and you're set.

Image Ready is what I use for sigs with pictures in them. By moving the pictures around, and creating new frames, it moves the pictures around.
