WWF Wrestlemania V

-Live from Atlantic City, New Jersey.  April 2, 1989.

-Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon & Jesse Ventura.

-This was the first PPV I ever saw live, so it holds a special place in my heart.

-We start off by having to listen to WWF Women's Champion Rockin' Robin sing America the Beautiful.  She does a pretty crappy job.

-King Haku (w/ Bobby Heenan) vs. Hercules:  Hercules turned face after Heenan tried to sell him as a slave to Ted Dibiase.  This is a chance for Herc to get revenge on Heenan.  But first, Heenan gets on the mic and demands that the audience bows to the King.  Herc swings the chain around, clearing the ring.  Haku attacks from behind and hits a lot of chops.  Herc reverses an Irish Whip, and hits a armdrag and scoop slam.  Faceplant by Herc.  Herc clotheslines Haku onto the floor.  Herc suplexes Haku in from the apron.  Herc hits two elbow drops, and then goes after Heenan because he's an idiot.  Too noone's surprise, Haku hits Herc from behind.  Haku tosses Herc beack in.  Two backbreakers by Haku, gets two.  Bearhug slows the match down.  Haku doesn't have it on properly though, and Herc is able to slip his arms in and break out of the hold.  Haku gives Herc a kick to the midsection to regain control.  Herc ducks a clothesline, and hits a crossbody for two.  Haku misses a flying cross body.  Knee lift by Herc.  Powerslam by Herc gets two.  Herc goes for a flying crossbody, but gets nailed with a Crescent Kick.  Haku misses a Frog Splash, and Herc hits a bridging belly to back suplex for the three.  Wow, I didn't know these two had it in them.  ***

WINNER:  Hercules via Pinfall at 6:57

-Backstage with Mean Gene & the Rockers.  Shawn's mic skills sucked back then.

-The Twin Towers (w/ Slick) vs. The Rockers:  'Jive Soul Bro' is one of the best entrance themes in WWF history.  We will see other good ones later.  No feud here.  Just a way to get the Twin Towers on the show, after spending the winter feuding with the Mega Powers.  The Rockers run around a bit to start.  Shawn starts off with Bossman.  Shawn immediately goes for a front facelock, and gets tossed off.  Only Shawn would be dumb enough to try to out power the Bossman.  Bossman places Michaels on the turnbuckle.  Marty interferes and Bossman gets a Missile Dropkick in the back of the head from Shawn.  Hey, they really are like the Hardys.  Marty continues to pummel on Bossman in the corner.  Michaels goes after Akeem, and then takes out Bossman.  Jesse is right on target, complaining about the poor sportsmanship of the Rockers.  I miss Jesse.  Akeem gets the tag, and dances.  Michaels does a moonwalk, and tags Janetty.  Armringer by Janetty, who tags Shawn back in.  Flying chop by Michaels.  Tag to Janetty, who hits a flying axehandle.  Michaels tags back in, and the Rockers proceed to double team Akeem.  They then go over and attack Bossman who is still standing on the apron.  Shawn works over the arm of Akeem for awhile, and then baits Akeem into missing an Avalanche.  Tag to Marty, who continues to work over the arm.  Akeem tags Bossman, without Marty knowing.  Marty leapfrogs Akeem, and gets caught in a Bossman bearhug.   The Towers sandwich Marty.  Jawbreaker by Bossman.  Tag to Akeem, and this time he hits the avalanche.  Tag to Bossman.  Big boot to Janetty.  Akeem back in.  Double Avalanche on Marty.  Tag to Bossman.  More punishment for Marty.  Tag to Akeem.  The Towers do the heel miscommunication spot, and Janetty makes the tag.  Slingshot dropkick by Michaels.  Double Flying shoulderblock by the Rockers gets two.  Shawn ducks a clothesline, but gets caught with a second.  That was vicious.  Bossman gets tagged, and goes up.   He misses the splash.  Two count for Michaels.  Michaels tries for a rana, but can't get it so Marty trips Bossman from behind.  Double dropkick to Akeem.  Double Missile Dropkick on Bossman, but Akeem breaks up the count.  Akeem tosses Marty, as Michaels goes up.  Michaels attempts a Flying Rana, but gets powerbombed by Bossman.  Tag to Akeem, who finishes it with the 747 Splash.  Good tag match.  Best Twin Towers match ever.  ***1/2

WINNERS:  The Twin Towers via Pinfall at 8:02

-Backstage with Tony Schiavone, Ted Dibiase & Virgil.  Dibiase had just gotten the Million Dollar Belt, which revitalized his career after the Hercules feud.

-Ted Dibiase (w/ Virgil) vs. Brutus Beefcake:  Dibiase shakes hands with Donald Trump, who is sitting at ringside, before the match.  Hopefully Beefcake has his working boots on tonight.  The Million Dollar Belt is not on the line, as usual.  Beefcake is in the barber phase of his career.  Cheapshot by Beefcake gets us underway.  Backbody drop by Beefcake.  Hip toss by Beefcake.  Another backbody drop, and Dibiase bails.  Back in and Dibiase hits a knee.  Beefcake comes back with three scoopslams.  Dibiase gets clotheslined back outside.  More stalling.  Dibiase gets back in.  They trade punches before Virgil trips up Beefcake.  Dibiase chokes out Brutus.  Fistdrop by Dibiase gets two.  Clothesline by Dibiase.  Flying axehandle by Dibiase gets two.  Dibiase attempts a backbody drop, but is countered into a small package for two.  They fight over a suplex, which Beefcake gets.  Double clothesline, but Dibiase hardly sells his.  Suplex by Dibiase.  Dibiase gets the Million Dollar Dream, but Beefcake makes the ropes.  Beefcake slams Dibiase's head into the turnbuckle.  Beefcake gets the Sleeper, but Virgil interferes forcing Beefcake to break the hold.  Beefcake goes after Virgil, and Dibiase attacks him from behind.  Both men are counted out.  Lame ending to a disappointing match. *

WINNER:  Double CO at 10:01

-Beefacke beats up Virgil after the match.  Dibiase tries to make the save, but gets caught.  Beefcake goes after the Hedge Clippers, but Dibiase & Virgil escape.

-At the restaurant with Lord Alfred Hayes & The Bushwhackers.  The Bushwhackers try to do an interview with a mouthful of food.  Stupid interview.

-The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers (w/ Jimmy Hart) vs. The Bushwhackers:  The Rougeaus had one of the greatest gimmicks (and theme songs) of all time.  All-American boys, indeed.  Of course, they are wrestling the Bushwhackers here, so I will be happy if it is above DUD.  Butch steals Jimmy's coat prior to the match.  The Whackers are about to tear it apart when the Rougeaus interfere.  The Whackers go after Jimmy again.  Ray tries for a handshake, but kicks Luke instead.  I miss the Rougeaus.  At least we have Christian to carry on the tradition.  Ray stalls, allowing Butch to attack him from behind.  Battering Ram hits Ray.  Jacques tries to break up the count, but ends up hitting Ray.  More stalling.  Jacques makes the tag.  Double team by the Rougeaus behind the ref's back.  Tag to Raymond.  Luke is whipped hard into the corner.  Ray hits a double axehandle.  More double teaming from the Rougeaus.  Tag to Jacques.  Abdominal stretch by Jacques.  Ray gets tagged back in, and hits a thrust kick.  The Rougeaus celebrate, allowing the Bushwackers to hit Jacques with the Battering Ram.  Double Stomachbreaker on Jacques finishes it.  Well, it was above DUD, but not by much. 1/4*

WINNERS:  The Bushwhackers via Pinfall at 5:35

-Sean Mooney is with the audience, and gets licked by the Bushwhackers.

-Mr. Perfect vs.  The Blue Blazer:  Mr. Perfect is still undefeated at this point, and is pre-Exodus.  Blazer is Owen Hart.  This is both guys Wrestlemania debut.  Perfect with a hiptoss.  Perfect gets slapped.  Drop toehold by Blazer.  Blazer flips out of a hiplock, and hits a couple of scoopslams.  Dropkick sends Perfect out.  Blazer hits a baseball slide.  Back in, as Blazer works over the arm.  Standing dropkick by Blazer.  Backbreaker by Blazer gets one.  Northern Lights Suplex by Blazer gets one.  Blazer goes up.  Big Splash, but Perfect gets the knees up.  Reverse Chinlock by Perfect.  Blazer catches Perfect in the corner.  Powerslam gets one.  Belly to belly suplex by Blazer gets two.  Crucifix by Blazer gets two.  Blazer argues with the ref, and gets blindsided.  Perfectplex gets three.  Criminally short, but its Hennig vs. Owen, so you know its good. ***

WINNER:  Mr. Perfect via Pinfall at 5:38

-Jesse Ventura unveils his surprise, which is Jesse being announced by Finkel and getting a huge pop from the crowd.

-Clips of a 5KM marathon the day earlier.  Mr. Fuji is competing in his black tux.  Fuji wants to show that he is in good shape for the tag title match.  Fuji starts off early, but gets passed by everyone.  Later, Fuji has completed the race without even breaking a sweat.

-Run DMC with the Wrestlemania Rap.  I don't care and fast forward.

-Clips of Survivor Series 1988, and the double turn of Demolition & the Powers of Pain.

-Backstage with Mean Gene & Demolition.

-WWF Tag Team Championship:  Demolition vs. Mr. Fuji & The Powers of Pain:  Demolition is crazy over.  Fuji has the Ceremonial Salt with him, which means it will be used later.  Warlord starts with Ax.  Ax stomps a mudhole in him.  Now Smash tags in and gets in on the action.  Neckvice by Smash.  Warlord backs up Smash into the corner, and tags Barbarian.  Smash beats up Barbarian, and tags Ax.  Ax with a scoop slam.  Demolition tags back and forth, not doing much of note.  Barbarian finally gets a shot in on Smash, and tags Warlord.  Smash retakes control immediately for the Demolition.  Tag to Ax, and Demolition hits a double clothesline on Warlord.  Ax goes after Fuji, and gets attacked from behind by Barbarian.  Warlord stomps away at Ax in the heel corner.  Fuji proceeds to choke out Ax from the apron.  Fuji tags in, and hits some chops and a lowblow on Ax.  Barbarian makes the tag.  Forearm to the back by Barbarian.  Boot of Fear by Barbarian.  Shoulder tackle by Barbarian.  Tag to Warlord.  Warlord with a double axehandle and more stomping.  Barbarian tags back in.  Warlord tags Fuji, and slams Ax, allowing Fuji to go to the top.  Fuji misses a flying legdrop.  Fuji tags Warlord, who takes out Smash before Ax can make the tag.  Slam by Warlord.  Warlord misses a clothesline, and Ax makes the hot tag.  Smash takes out all three opponents.  Demolition hits a guillitine on Warlord.  Barbarian makes the save.  Ax clotheslines Barbarian outside.  Fuji comes in with the salt.  Smash ducks, and Warlord gets it in the eyes.  That leaves Fuji alone with Demolition.  Demolition Decapitation ends it two seconds later.  Very slow and dull.  1/4*

WINNERS:  Demolition via Pinfall to RETAIN the titles at 8:20

-Backstage with Tony Schiavone.  He attempts to interview Randy Savage but is rejected.  Poor Tony.

-Dino Bravo (w/ Frenchy Martin) vs. Ron Garvin:  This is one of the last appearances, if not the last, of Frenchy Martin.  He would be replaced with Jimmy Hart soon after this show.  Garvin is just 16 months removed from being NWA World Champion.  Before we get to the match, Finkel introduces 'Superfly' Jimmy Snuku making his return to the WWF.  He comes to the ring, poses and then leaves.  I don't know why they did this after the introductions to the match.  Garvin gets blindsided from behind as he cannot figure out which part of the audience he is supposed to throw his towel.  No wonder the NWA couldn't find anyone to job to him.  Slam and an elbow drop by Bravo.  Bravo works over the kidneys.  Bearhug by Bravo.  Shoulderblock by Bravo.  Another.  One foot pin gets two.  Garvin counters a powerbomb and gets two.  Forearm by Garvin gets two.  Garvin gets a nice rolling cradle for two.  Sleeper by Garvin, but Bravo makes it to the ropes.  Garvin goes for a piledriver, which Bravo counters into a backbody drop, which Garvin counters into a sunset flip for two.  Garvin goes for the ten punches in the corner, but is atomic dropped by Bravo.  The Side Suplex finishes Garvin.  Better than I expected, but I wasn't expecting much. *

WINNER:  Dino Bravo via Pinfall at 3:06

-Garvin attacks Frenchy after the match, and does the Garvin Stomp.  For those of you who don't know what that is, its about the most idiotic move ever.  Think Broncobuster territory here.

-The Brainbusters (w/ Bobby Heenan) vs. Strike Force:  Rick Martel returned from an injury recieved against Demolition a few months earlier, but for some reason wrestled only in singles matches prior to Wrestlemania V.  Probably prepping him for what occurs later in the match.  Martel starts with Tully Blanchard, and grabs a side headlock.  Arn Anderson nails Martel with a knee from behind, right away.  Martel fights off both the Brainbusters.  Tito Santana comes in and we have a four way brawl.  Double dropkicks by Strike Force send the Brainbusters outside.  Arn comes back in and briefly takes control, before Martel hits a carpet muncher for two.  Martel & Anderson fight it out on the mat.  Arn catches Martel in a full body scissors.  Martel powers out, into the Quebec Crab.  Tully interferes, breaking up the hold.  Blanchard gets the tag.  Martel tags Santana behind the back of Blanchard .  Santana hits a bulldog from behind.  Another brawl, and Strike Force gets dual figure fours on Tully & Arn.  Arn breaks the hold, leaving Santana in the ring with Blanchard.  Santana bridges out of a pin attempt by Blanchard, into backslide which Anderson breaks up.  Small package by Santana on Blanchard, but Anderson grabs the ref.  The Brainbusters were so cool.  They could play the heels better than anyone.  Santana makes the tag behind the refs back, but accidently hits Martel with the flying forearm.  Martel goes flying out of the ring.  Blanchard hits a dropkick on Santana.  Tag to Anderson.  Arn works over the knee.  Tag to Blanchard, who continues more punishment on Tito.  Tito reverses an Irish Whip, sending Tully into Arn.  Anderson gets the tag, and stomps on Santana.  Sunset flip by Santana, but too close to the ropes and Blanchard is able to get the tag.  Two count for Blanchard.  Flying crossbody by Tito gets two.  Blanchard makes the tag, and holds Tito's leg, allowing Arn to pummel away some more.  Rear chinlock by Anderson.  Arn goes up top, and gets slammed off.  I don't think Anderson has EVER managed to hit that move.  Blanchard gets the tag.  Santana uses the last ounce of strength in his body to make it over to tag Martel, and Martel refuses the tag.  Martel walks off as Tully hits a Stungun.  This is one of the most famous heel turns in the history of the WWF.  Arn gets the tag, and destroys Tito in the corner.  Spinebuster by Anderson.  Tag to Blanchard.  Tito fights back, but it is short lived.  Tag to Anderson.  Spike Piledriver ends Tito's suffering.  Great match.  Great story.  And as I said a very famous moment.  ****

WINNER:  Brainbusters via Pinfall at 9:17

-Backstage with Mean Gene & Rick Martel.  Martel is sick and tired of carrying Santana around.  Martel says Santana is just lucky that he walked off instead of something much worse.

-Piper's Pit:  Finkel introduces the returning Roddy Piper only to have Brother Love come out instead, dressed in a kilt.  Love does the "I Love You" bit, and welcomes all of us to the Brother Love Show.  Love proceeds to interview Brother Rodney Piper, a Brother Love imitation of 'Rowdy' Roddy.  Love proceeds to suck up to himself, and make fun of Piper's acting career.  Morton Downey Jr. then enters the fray, with cigarette in hand.  Downey & Love have a verbal sparring match.  Now its time for Piper's big return.  Brother Love is Piper's first target.  Downey is tossing cigarettes at the two of them the whole time.  Piper proceeds to rip off Love's kilt, or skirt according to Piper, humiliating Love enough to send him running to the back.  Time for target number two.  Downey continues to blow smoke in Piper's face.  After a while Piper goes for a fire extinguisher and lets it go on Downey.  Piper 1, Downey 0.  I usually complain about these segments, but this was quite funny and well worth my time.

-Backstage with Mean Gene and an update on Hulk Hogan's movie career.  It ends up being a sneak preview for No Holds Barred.  As with any movie involving Hogan, avoid it at all costs.

-In the arena with Sean Mooney & Donald Trump.  Nothing interview.

-Upstairs, Jesse rants and raves about Hogan invading his territory.  Jesse offers Hogan a job driving his limo in Hollywood.

-Clips of the Mega Powers breakup and feud.

-Backstage with Mean Gene & Hulk Hogan.  Usual Hogan rant.

-Andre the Giant (w/ Bobby Heenan) vs. Jake Roberts:  Big John Studd is the special guest referee, fresh off winning the Royal Rumble.   This feud was over Andre's fear of snakes.  You would think that if Andre was that afraid of snakes he wouldn't want to be near this match, but whatever.  Andre and Studd have words almost immediately.  During Jake's entrance, Andre manages to take one of the turnbuckle pads off.  Andre starts the match by slamming Roberts into the exposed turnbuckle.  Andre puts on a sleeper to waste some time.  Andre didn't have much left by this point.  Andre lets go, and no sells all of Jake's offense.  Roberts keeps going for Damien.  Andre squashes Roberts in the corner.  Buttsplash by Andre.  Roberts finally fights back, and hooks Andre in the ropes.  Roberts chokes out Andre.  Studd lets Andre out, and Andre immediately takes control of the match.  Headbutt by Andre.  Andre with a nerve hold.  Andre with shoulder thrusts into the corner, until Roberts comes back with the Triple H offense, ie. lots of kneelifts.  Andre gets knocked down, but takes back control and chops Roberts outside.  Roberts gets the bag, but Studd won't let Roberts take it in the ring.  Andre nails Studd from behind, as Ted Dibiase attacks Roberts out of nowhere and takes Damien.  Roberts chases him down and gets Damien.  Jake tosses Damien into the ring, causing Andre to bail.  Awful, awful match.  The interference made it even worse.  -***

WINNER:  Jake Roberts via DQ at 9:44

-Up in the cheap seats with Sean Mooney, and some fan of Jake Roberts.  Interview lasts like two seconds.

-Backstage with Tony Schiavone & Sensational Sherri.  She has words for Rockin' Robin, and wants back the Women's Title.  Whatever happened to that angle?  She also makes fun of Elisabeth and the breakup of the Mega Powers.

-Rythm & Blues (w/ Jimmy Hart) vs. The Hart Foundation:  This is pre-Elvis for Greg Valentine.  That would occur at Wrestlemania VI.  Rythm & Blues were only a semi-regular team at this point, usually jobbing to teams like Demolition or the Harts.  They would briefly go their separate ways later in the year so Valentine that could feud with Ron Garvin, and then reunite after the Royal Rumble to form the actual Rythm & Blues that most people remember.  The Harts were feuding with the Rougeaus at this point, as Jimmy Hart sold their contract to the Rougeaus.  Since the Rougeaus were busy earlier in the evening, its up to Jimmy's other tag team to finish off the Harts.  Personally, I would rather have seen Harts/Rougeaus.  Honky Tonk Man starts with Bret Hart.  Honky tries a backbody drop, but Bret escapes and gets a rolling prawn hold for two.  Honky swings and misses, and gets caught by an atomic drop by Hart.  Inverted atomic drop by Hart, and Honky tags in his more talented partner.  He runs into an inverted atomic drop of his own.  Dropkick by Hart.  Valentine walks into the wrong corner and gets slugged by Neidhart.  Bret tags Niedhart, who comes in with a beautiful slingshot shoulder tackle.  I'll give it 1/4* just for that.  Two count on the Hammer.  Neidhart bites Valentine, and tags Bret back in.  Backbreaker by Hart.  Bret misses the second rope elbow however.  Valentine & Honky work over Bret in the corner.  Tag to Honky, who distracts the ref long enough for Valentine to choke out Hart.  Honky with some elbow drops to Hart.  Tag to Valentine, who hits another elbow.  More elbows.  This match has slowed way down.  Lowblow by Valentine, and a tag to Honky.  Honky hits the Shake, Rattle & Roll, and tags Valentine.  Valentine goes for the figure four, but is blocked by Hart.  Bret can't follow up, and gets caught in a gutbuster for two.  Tag to Honky, who blows the advantage.  Crossbody by Hart gets two, but the kickout sends Hart all the way outside.  Tag to Valentine, and they continue to slowly work over Hart.  Hart makes the hot tag.  Anvil with some dropkicks on both Honky & Valentine.  He gets two on Valentine.  Clothesline gets two, as Honky makes the save.  Tag to Honky.  Tag to Hart.  Slam by Hart, and the Second Rope Elbow.  Vertical suplex gets two.   Honky goes for the Megaphone as Jimmy distracts the ref, but Neidhart gets it and tosses it to Bret.  WHAMMO!  One, two, three.  Match started off ok, but was dragged down real quick.  1/2*

WINNERS:  The Hart Foundation via Pinfall at 7:40

-Clips of the Warrior/Rude feud.  Rude beats down Warrior at the Royal Rumble posedown.  Warrior freaks out and takes out the officials.  Warrior was super over in 1989, but the WWF ruined it when they humanized after he won the WWF Title.

-WWF Intercontinental Championship:  Ultimate Warrior vs. Rick Rude (w/ Bobby Heenan):  Warrior was unstoppable at this point, demolishing former champion Honky Tonk Man in 30 seconds to win the title.  No one gave Rude any shot in this match.  Rude does the posedown before the match.  Warrior gets a huge pop.  Rude tries a cheap shot before the bell, but Warrior is still wearing the belt so Rude injures himself instead.  Warrior pounds away on Rude.  Warrior tosses Rude into the corner.  Rude is getting killed out there.  Warrior gets a bearhug, which goes on for a long time.  Rude finally goes to the eyes to break the hold.  Nice Missile Dropkick by Rude, but Warrior kicks out before the one.  Scoop slam by Warrior.  Another.  Back to the bearhug.  Yawn.  Warrior lets go, and bites Rude.  Backdrop by Warrior.  Warrior goes for the Big Splash, but Rude gets up his knees.  Rude hits a piledriver for two.  Jawbreaker by Rude, but Rude is too injured to swivel his hips.  Clothesline by Rude for two.  Side russian legsweep by Rude for two.  Rude with a bow and arrow, but Warrior gets to the ropes and starts his shaking the ropes comeback.  Shoulder tackle by Warrior.   Carpet muncher by Warrior, followed by a second.  Backbreaker by Warrior, which Warrior screws up.  Warrior tosses Rude around like a rag doll.  Warrior misses a charge to the corner, and Rude goes for the Rude Awakening.  Warrior powers out, and hits a short clothesline.  Warrior clotheslines Rude outside.  Warrior suplexes Rude back in, but Heenan grabs the leg and Rude falls on top for one of the biggest upsets of the modern era.  Match was ok, but the rematch would far surpass it.  *1/2

WINNER:  Rick Rude via Pinfall to WIN the IC Title at 9:36

-Rude takes off, leaving Heenan alone with Warrior.  Gorilla Press Slam and Big Splash destroy Heenan.

-Bad News Brown vs. Jim Duggan:  What?  No interview segment?  Bad News is talented, but he has his work cut out for him here.  Brown jumps Duggan before the bell.  These two slug it out with punches.  Brown goes to leave, but changes his mind.  Duggan slingshots Brown back in.  Punch, punch, punch, no sell, headbutt, punch, punch, punch, no sell, repeat.  This is bad.  Kick to the ribs by Brown to give me a break from all the punching.  Headbutt sends Duggan outside.  Brown tosses Duggan into the post.  Back inside, but Brown misses the Ghetto Blaster.  Duggan goes for the Three Point Stance, but Brown goes for a chair.  Duggan gets the 2X4, and they have a dual.  The ref calls for the bell, which reminds me of the joy I used to have when it rung at the end of the day at school.  Ugh.  DUD

WINNER:  Double DQ at 3:49

-Backstage with Mean Gene & The Red Rooster.  Contrary to popular opinion, the Red Rooster gimmick wasn't so bad at first.  Heenan brought in Terry Taylor to the WWF so he could prove that he could make anybody a champion.  Heenan than gave him the Red Rooster gimmick to show that he didn't care about Taylor.  The idea is similar to that of Virgil.  Taylor is humiliated by Heenan until he has enough and turns face to a big pop.  The problem was that after the face turn, instead of just becoming Terry Taylor, he decided that he was the Red Rooster, and the career of Terry Taylor was flushed down the toilet.

-Bobby Heenan (w/ Brooklyn Brawler) vs. Red Rooster:  Brawler was Rooster's replacement in the Heenan Family.  Heenan just got clobbered by Warrior and is in no shape for this match.  Rooster absolutely destroys Heenan.  Heenan misses a charge and is pinned immediately.  Too short to be anything.  DUD

WINNER:  Red Rooster via Pinfall at 0:32

-Brawler punks out Rooster after the match.

-Backstage with Mean Gene & Miss Elisabeth.  Liz will be in a neutral corner for the main event.

-Backstage with Tony Schiavone.  He says nothing of importance.

-Up in the bleachers with Sean Mooney.  He gets predictions from the audience.  Everyone picks Hogan.

-WWF Championship:  Randy Savage vs. Hulk Hogan:  This is the blowoff to a very famous feud, and the blueprint for every man-steals-wife storyline since.  Security just swarms the wrestlers coming out for the main event.  I find that odd since they never did at Wrestlemania IV in this arena.  Savage bails to start.  They lock up.  Hogan tosses Savage across the ring.  Shoulder block by Hogan.  Savage wears Hogan down with a headlock, but bails when Hogan gets away.  Hogan chases after Savage, whom hides behind Liz.  Hogan goes for headlock, but Savage counters with a belly to back suplex.  Savage misses an elbow drop, and Hogan comes back.  Savage goes to eyes, and hits a flying axehandle for two.  Savage with an armbar.  Hogan fights back and sends Savage flying outside.  Savage gets dragged back in, and gets hammered by Hogan in the corner.  Clothesline by Hogan.  A series of elbow drops by Hogan.  Clothesline by Savage for two, and Hogan is busted open.  Sleeper by Savage.  Hogan breaks the hold and hits a clothesline.  Hogan catches Savage's leg and hits an atomic drop.  Savage moves out of the way of an elbow drop, and Hogan is in trouble again.  School boy by Savage gets two.  Hogan is whipped to the corner, and grabs on to Savage's leg.  Savage goes after the eyes.  Savage slaps Hogan, which wakes him up.  Hogan pounds the crap out of Savage in the corner.  Clothesline by Hogan, but Hogan hurts his arm.  Hogan slams Savage over the top rope.  Liz goes to help Savage, but he isn't too happy about it.  Hogan tries to save, but Savage gets him first.  Hogan takes control, and tries to slam Savage into the post.  Liz stops him, and allows Savage time to slip off and nail Hogan from behind.  Savage goes after Liz again, and forces her to go back to the dressing room.  Savage goes to the top, and hits the flying double axehandle on the railing.  Hogan is tossed back in.  Guillitine by Savage to further injure the neck.  Savage chokes Hogan out on the ropes.  Elbow to the head by Savage.  Scoop slam by Savage.  Knee drop gets two.  Savage takes off his wrist tape and chokes out Hogan, making sure to break at 4.  Savage chokes out Hogan again.  Hogan is out.  Savage hits the Flying Elbow for two.  Hulk Up time.  You know the rest, as the Smarks of the time cry out in pain.  Prior to the Hart/Michaels Iron Man Match, this was the best Wrestlemania Main Event ever.  If you love storyline in your matches, you will love this one.  ****

WINNER:  Hulk Hogan via Pinfall to WIN the WWF Championship at 17:54

-Hogan poses for 10 minutes after the match.

-Immediately after the show, Savage would dump Elisabeth and take on Sherri as his new manager.

BOTTOM LINE:  This is one of the best Wrestlemanias, and WWF PPVs ever.  Two **** matches and three others at ***+.  A good Piper's Pit segment, one of the biggest upsets in history, and one of the most famous heel turns in history are also present.  Plus, the blowoff for one of the biggest angles ever in the Main Event.  Great show.  Thumbs up.

Good review. WM V is also one of my favorite PPV's. For some reason the WWF clipped the Piper's Pit segment off the re-released WWF Home Video version.

Well...before I make this statement understand this:

To me the Main Event of a show is whatever match is on last.  That is how the show ends and can dictate alot about how the show is remembered.

(therefore Flair/Savage, Savage/Warrior are disqualified from being Main Events at WrestleMAnia's 8 and 7)

That being said...

This was the best Main Event the WWF had on a WrestleMania for the first 16 damn years IMO.

look:

1 Hogan/T vs. Piper/Orndorff

2 Hogan/Bundy

3 Hogan/Giant

4 Savage/DiBiase

6 Hogan/Warrior

7 Hogan/Slaughter

8 Hogan/Sid

9 Hart/Yoko, Hogan

10 Hart/Yoko

11 LT/Bigelow

12 Micheals/Hart

13 UT/SId

14 Austin/Micheals

15 Rock/Austin

16 Rock/HHH/Foley/Big Show

Some of those matches were good, some were decent, and some sucked.

The bottom line is until Rock/Austin at WrestleMania 17...there was no better Main Event match at WrestleMania than this one.

But, I've never heard anyone mention that.

I also agree that the final match is the Main Event.  A good example of this is at Summerslam 1992, where the IC Title is the Main Event as opposed to the WWF Title.

I liked Hart/Michaels better than Hogan/Savage, but that's just me.  Hogan/Warrior is pretty good too, but not as good as Hogan/Savage.  I don't like to talk about the Main Event of Wrestlemania III.  It was a horrible match, but it is such a big match that it is the very definition of the Main Event.  For that reason if I ever do a Wrestlemania III rant, I will refuse to give a star rating to that match.

I agree. Hogan vs. Savage was the best WrestleMania match until Rock/Austin at WrestleMania X-7. If only Flair/Savage was the "real" main event then I would say that was the second greatest match in WM history behind Rock/Austin.

Decent Tape Review, better then what can publish (as of now). I can agree on some points, depending on the match, the main event is the last match on the card. Unless you look at events like SNME, where they had meaningless Jobber matches clsoing the show, i wouldnt call that the main event. Keep up the good work dude, I like seeing people do the old shows.
