Dean Malenko's neck injury?

I've always seen Malenko with that big scar on the upper part of his back/lower part of his neck. Did he have neck surgery like Austin, Benoit, etc., years ago?

 

What was the injury and how did it happen?

It was a neck injury. He was in a car wreck back in '77 I believe, and messed up his neck, ending his amateur career. There's more to it I know, but that's all I can think of right off hand
