Guest DVD Spree Report post Posted April 15, 2003 I've just bought a batch of DVDs from Hong Kong, all Stephen Chow films, all Universe discs. They're the barebones-style, funky-looking Universe discs with the "holographic" images lasered onto the face, rather than actual printed art. ANyway, I noticed as I was checking them out that the first disc, God of Cookery, didn't play properly. I looked at the disc, and it had a dusty film and milky, cloudy streaks on the back. It looks like fucking DVD rot. From Beijing With Love was okay, but the other discs also looked to have rot. I flipped through the rest of my DVD collection and noticed that a couple of other discs (not from Hong Kong) also had the same thing. It seems that it's ONLY the style that's basically the plain disc face with just the title printed on the front, but not full, printed artwork. I know last year there was a problem with... oh shit, whatever company distributes the Terminator flicks (Fox?) having DVD rot, but has anyone else experienced the problem on their discs? The older ones seem to be more succeptable.
Guest Karnage Report post Posted April 18, 2003 Are you sure they are Universe discs? Cause lately I've been trying to find Shaolin Soccer at some of the Chinese shops near me and they seem to have all seem to have no DTS logo on the front and there is no Universe logo also. It's probably a bootleg, but all the Chinese DVD shops stock that version, which is odd since they do seem to carry some legit stuff. Anyways, the discs could be faulty I guess. Guest Ravenbomb Report post Posted April 18, 2003 never had this problem. Closest thing I've had was these idiots who don't take care of rental DVD's. I rented one, and the bottom was STICKY. Like something got spilled on it. I wiped it off and it played, but still. Good thing it wasn't an adult DVD or I wouldn't have wanted to touch the thing. What's DVD rot? Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted April 18, 2003 I've had no problems with all two of my Universe discs, but then neither are the titles you mentioned.

The discs are definitely put out by Universe - the official ones, anyone (not that there really are such things in Honkers). I think it might be a bad batch. Don't worry about Shaolin Soccer though - it's got printed disc art, so it's not affected. I'm glad no-one else has had the problem, I think it might just be aging on the discs. Thanks guys. Guest art_vandelay Report post Posted April 19, 2003 Did you get God Of Cookery in your Stephen Chow purchases?
Guest DVD Spree Report post Posted April 20, 2003 Oh hell yes. That film is pure genius - actually, most of Chow's films are total genius. BUt the way he can take stuff like football (soccer) and COOKERY and turn them into really strong comedies - man, that is TALENT.

The scene where the fat guy takes a bite into Chow's fish ball and proceeds into a dream sequence where he's running down a beach in his underwear still brings a chuckle to me. My personal fave has got to be the fat guy scene in Shaolin Soccer with the egg and teh feet straightening. It was so fucking funny they did it TWICE, just because. Must be something about fat guys in Chow's films.
