Guest alkeiper Report post Posted March 23, 2002 World Series: Cards over Yanks in 7 AL MVP: A. Rodriguez AL Rookie: Carlos Pena NL MVP: Sammy Sosa NL ROTY: Sean Burroughs or Josh Beckett Scott Rolen: Re-signs with Phillies. Not many teams will offer a ten year contract. Jeff Kent: the whole thing blows over Ishii: Somewhere between Nomo and Irabu Bud Selig: continues to lose credibility, but won't get ousted until the owners lose the next labor battle Barry Bonds: Won't hit 73, but 60 seems reasonable. Contraction: Doesn't happen, and is exposed for the bullshit stadium posturing it really is. Guest Some Guy Report post Posted March 26, 2002 I really don't think the Yanks are going to be quite as good as every here thinks. They added Giambi and a few injury prone guys to fill gaping holes left by Scott Brosius, Paul O'Neil, Tino Martinez, and Knoblauch. All of these guys were with them from 96 until last year. A year in which they didn't even win 90 games in the regular season (I think), only made it through the playoffs through the choking of Oakland and Seatle and then almost won the World Series cause of Arizona choking. They went through the entire year riding the back of an almost 40yr old pitcher and Mussina (who is very good) while not showing any ability to consistantly score runs. Adding Giambi and a few other guys (Rich Karsay is no where near Jeff Nelson, who they lost 2 yrs ago and failed to replace) might not be the answer. Clemens is older, Giambi is injury prone, so is Jeter, David Wells was over rated even when he was young, and El Duque is 70 yrs old. BTW I think my Boston Redsox will do better than expected this year. I'm not saying World Series but we have a very good lineup, but some pitching deficiencies . Guest teke184 Report post Posted March 26, 2002 The Yankees are a standard pick because they have the money to throw around to get good guys and their GM and manager have a good idea of who is worth bringing in. There is NO other team that always has the talent to win it all AND the front-office brains to make it work like the Yankees do.
Guest ajc Report post Posted March 26, 2002 I'm not a Yankees fan, but I can't see how anyone wouldn't think they're one of the elite teams in the AL. First, no one in the East has the arms to compete with them. Secondly, they improved at 1B from last year...it's reasonable to think that Soriano will continue to improve at 2B, while 100 games of Rondell White in LF will be better that Chuck Knoblauch. They'll score runs this year...and plenty of them.
Guest The Man in Blak Report post Posted March 27, 2002 Plus, there's always the "late season blockbuster trade" factor that you have to consider with the Yankees. If the Yankees are in 2nd place going into the stretch before the deadline, expect a big deal...as always.

Guest The Man in Blak Report post Posted March 28, 2002 Actually, they might end up pulling a trade for Matt Morris from St. Louis, since Morris' contract is going to be up at the end of the season and he'll be wanting to command big money that the Cardinals might not be able to dish out. Guest Report post Posted March 28, 2002 Well, here we go: NL East: 1. Braves 2. Mets 3. Marlins 4. Phillies 5. Expos NL Central: 1. Astros 2. Cubs 3. Cardinals 4. Reds 5. Brewers 6. Pirates NL West: 1. Giants 2. Padres 3. D'backs 4. Dodgers 5. Rockies AL East: 1. Yankees 2. Jays 3. Red Sox 4. D'Rays 5. Orioles AL Central: 1. White Sox 2. Indians 3. Twins 4. Royals 5. Tigers AL West: 1. A's 2. Mariners 3. Rangers 4. Angels NL Wildcard: Cubs (yeah, I'm a fan, and it's not terribly objective) AL Wildcard: Mariners World Series: A's over Astros NL MVP: J.D. Drew AL MVP: Magglio Ordonez NL ROY: Sean Burroughs AL ROY: Hank Blaylock NL CY Young: Randy Johnson AL Cy Young: Mike Mussina The Cardinals are the trendy pick to go to the World Series, but they are not at all improved since last year. Tino is a downgrade at 1B, and Isringhausen(sp?) is overrated. Don't get me wrong, any team w/ Drew, Pujols, Edmonds, Kile, Morris, Bud Smith, etc. is going to be good, but I don't think that they are a mortal lock for the W.S, or a playoff spot in the very competitive Central. As far as my Cubbies go, I was very optimistic earlier, but Baylor is making horrible personnel moves and starting the team in a hole. I think I will write about this in its own thread later. (Like anyone cares, I think I just need to vent.
Guest alkeiper Report post Posted March 29, 2002 The Cardinals should improve this year simply by not starting Andy Benes.
Guest The Man in Blak Report post Posted March 29, 2002 The Cardinals should improve this year simply by not starting Andy Benes. No kidding. That, and even though Mark McGwire 2000 was great, Mark McGwire 2001 was not and having Tino in the corner can definitely be considered an upgrade, IMO. Guest phoenixrising Report post Posted March 29, 2002 I think the major storyline of the season will be the complete breakdown of the Texas Rangers lockerroom. Look at this cast of characters John Hart has cropped up... Carl Everett - nuff said John Rocker - nuff said Chan Ho Park - who could win until he became the ace of the Dodger staff...then he became amazingly mediocre. Ruben Rivera (if he makes the team) - stole out of Jeter's locker, a serious no-no of locker room etiquette Hideki Irabu - gone downhill since his impressive debut Ivan Rodriguez - who's contract is up Now if the Rangers do suddenly manage to overtake three very talented teams and win the West, John Hart will look like a genius. If they don't...look for this soap opera to be updated nightly on ESPN. Also, I hope the Twins kick some serious ass this year just to shove Selig's contraction idea in his face.
