Bubba Ho-Tep: Bruce Campbell, Elvis, a Mummy...

Recommended Posts

Guest Downhome

It sounds weird as hell, but hear me out. This film (said to be more drama than horror, so I guess it's a horror/drama), is going to be fucking on fire. Here is a quick write up of the plot...

Based on the Bram Stoker Award nominee short story by cult author Joe R. Lansdale, Bubba Ho-tep tells the "true" story of what really did become of Elvis Presley. We find Elvis (Bruce Campbell) as an elderly resident in an East Texas rest home, who switched identities with an Elvis impersonator years before his "death", then missed his chance to switch back. Elvis teams up with Jack (Ossie Davis), a fellow nursing home resident who thinks that he is actually President John F. Kennedy, and the two valiant old codgers sally forth to battle an evil Egyptian entity who has chosen their long-term care facility as his happy hunting grounds.

...yeah, on the cover it sounds like straight to video tripe, but underneath it all, it's much, much more. Already at the HBO Comedy Arts Festivle, Bruce Campbell won Best Actor, and the film also won Best Screenplay. All the while, various critics and people "in the industry" are hailing Bruce Campbell's performance as the best of the year so far, and is actually outstanding enough to be up for Best Actor at the Academy Awards.

After you get past the idea of the Mummy in this film, the movie is basicly about the trials of growing old, and basicly how much it can suck. We see an aged Elvis trying to cope with what he has become, after at one time being the King of Rock & Roll. For a video of parts of the film and the such...

...and for an eight minute or so radio talk show on UPNRadio about the film...

...now I know it sounds totally odd, but get this. Wouldn't this be worth releasing? Why not take a chance on a film like this? The film does not have a distributor yet, but I hope to God it does. I know I'd be there the first in line, this is exactly what we need in Hollywood. Something different, something odd, something to get people excited about new ideas in Hollywood...once more.

Also, head on over to IMDB by clicking right here and check out some of the comments from those that have screened it. The movie so far has a 7.7 rating (pretty high for IMDB) with 149 votes so far. There are some great quotes on this film, one being...

Best US film since Memento

...just check it out, heh.

Sincerely,

...Downhome...

I was supposed to get a screener of it for review but they friggin ran out of them. I wish he'd quit trying to get a theatrical release and just put it out on DVD. It's been over a year now and nobody has bit, get over it, doesn't look like it's gonna happen. I've wanted to see this damn movie forever. Too bad Lion's Gate was so willing to pick up Corpses but not this.

Lethargic, you ignorant slut. (Not a flame, it's from SNL)

Sometimes it takes up to 2 or 3 years to get a studio to release it. Just wait. With the reviews it's getting; it's sure to be picked up eventually.

Why would I want to wait 2 or 3 years to see it bomb in theaters? I wanna see it now. I don't wanna wait for it. It's been long enough as it is. Even 1000 Corpses didn't go this long without getting picked up.

Sounds great, I'm sure Bruce pulled it off well, he's good at making strange roles great ones. It would indeed be awesome if he got an academy award, he deserves it, and it would be a great achievement for one of the most famous B movie actors of all time.

No offense, but that sounds like a really crappy movie.

What...how on earth can you say that a movie starring Bruce Campbell as an elderly Elvis teaming up with an old man who believes he's JFK to battle an evil Egyptian being sounds BAD?

A weird man you are

Because it is worthy of studio release.

Damn, you're selfish.

People want to see Bruce Campbell doing Ash and fighting zombies and what nots. Thats all he can do really. It'll be awesome, but we've seen it before.

MrZsasz, what are you talking about with 2-3 years. If a movie is made indepenently and is deemed marketable a studio will pick it up and release it ASAP. The Evil Dead movies didn't make that much money and that's what the decision will be based on. Any money says it'll be good ol' Lions Gate to the rescue agian.

I've actually read the short story this movie is based on. It's in a collection of short stories based on the cult of the dead Elvis. I forget the title, but it's a fun collection of short stories. I thought that this story was by far the best in the book as it was funny, imaginative and very creative.

As an added note, Ozzie Davis is a black guy, so the fact that he thinks he's JFK is ten times as funny.

I waiting for a Brisco County Jr feature film to be made.

This movie sound more like a Johnny Bravo tv special.

We've seen Bruce Campbell as elderly Elvis teaming with an old man who believes he's JFK to fight an evil Egyptian entity of some sort before?

Is this about a Mummy or what?

Oh is that why they are constantly coming out with new special edition DVDs with new cases and what not? Oh and they're making their 2nd Evil Dead video game.

It may not have made a ton at the theaters but those movies have made a killing in home video.

I've actually been reading about Bubba Ho-Tep for a while and have been wanting it to get a studio release. People who saw the screening in Vegas claimed there are some absolutely hilarious moments in the movie and that it is surprisingly good. Here's hoping.

Exactly, home video. Friggin Lorenzo Lamas movies do well on home video. Which is where this one should be and will be. I actually think that this movie COULD be a hit in the theaters, but only with a really good marketing blitz to get the plot over to the mainstream. But the studios are just too closed minded to do it. Even if Lion's Gate does pick it up, they'll do little to no advertising, throw it on a few hundred screens and it'll be a waste of time anyway.

I saw this in the theatre last September, and it was awesome. Definitely Campbell's best performance. The music is amazing, and despite the ludicrous storyline, it's very entertaining and quite a character study. I think if they gave this film some promotion and a decent release (maybe 1000 or so theatres) it could make some money, at least enough to make back it's low budget. I'd be happy with a DVD release as well, since I've already seen it in the theatre, so either is fine with me. Haha.

I thought Ossie Davis' character really was JFK?

Anyway... I've been waiting on this one for a long time, but I doubt it's going to get anything beyond limited theatrical releasing, which means I won't get to see it anyway. So I'm going to have to go with Leth on this one and pull a "selfish card" - just put it out on DVD.

Ossie Davis is black so I'm sure his character isn't that of the real JFK.

I thought the story was supposed to be that JFK's brain was transferred into his body which is why he's "really" JFK. But I don't know, I'm not the bastard who's seen it in the theater am I?

Well if there's a possibility of that transplanted brain being the real story, then hope he's insane and just thinks he's JFK.

Saying that JFK's brain was transplanted would be kinda dumb seeing as how we've all seen JFK's brain get turned into chip dip.

The man in the Magruder(sp?) footage is white though, and thus obviously not the real JFK. Thirty years of conspiracy and theory... SOLVED! :P

I will see the film because I love Bruce Campbell. If anyone can make a bad movie entertaining, it's him.

According to Ossie's character, he really is JFK, the government partially erased his memory and dyed his skin black. Government scum!

First off, I'll watch ANYTHING Bruce Campbell. I have a Bruce Campbell film collection. I own his book. I have his autograph as a prized possession.

I worship in the Cult of Bruce.

And I'm rabid to see this film. It sounds hilarious, and if Ozzie sports the characteristic Kennedy New England accent, I just may piss myself.
