Dallas Clark

TE | (6-3, 257, 4.55) | IOWA

By Pro Football Weekly

Notes: Played quarterback and linebacker in high school, when he earned all-state honors. Walked on Iowa football team in 1998 and redshirted as a linebacker. In '99, was an outside linebacker and return specialist playing at 200 pounds. Recorded six tackles and two tackles for loss before having an emergency appendectomy and missing the second half of the season. Played linebacker but mainly special teams in 2000. In '01, moved to tight end and started 10-of-12 games, playing little in two non-starts (Wisconsin, Northwestern) due to injury. Caught 34 passes for 509 yards and four touchdowns. Started all 13 games in '02, when he caught 43-742-4 (including a 95-yard TD catch vs. Purdue), and won the John Mackey Award, given to the nation's top tight end. Was also named first-team All-Big Ten and AFCA All-American. Decided to enter the NFL draft after his junior season.

Positives: A top competitor with high character. Has very good speed for a tight end and uses high athleticism to his advantage. Has good hands and can make the tough catch. Marv Cook-type. Will position himself between ball and defender and wall off the safety or linebacker consistently. Body control makes him look like a wide receiver at times. Has huge upside and star potential.

Negatives: Relatively new to the position, having moved to tight end in 2001. Doesn't have a great base as a blocker and lacks natural size. Is a liability as a blocker at times, but admits the weakness and is dedicated to improve in that area.

Summary: Should be one of the first tight ends drafted and will improve as he gains experience. Clark isn't as brash or athletic, but he has some of Jeremy Shockey's characteristics as a player, and could be to a team what Jay Novacek was to the Cowboys.

Well I am happy, I got a top DE prospect and the top TE on my board both filling huge need areas. Dallas Clark is the one guy going into this draft that I really had targeted so to hell with the 2nd 2nd round pick if I can get the guy I really wanted.

With the 47th pick of the 2003 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs select CB Rashean Mathis from Bethune-Cookman.

Rashean Mathis

DB | (6-0, 202, 4.41) | BETHUNE-COOKMAN

By Pro Football Weekly

Notes: Started nine times at cornerback as a true freshman in 1999 and had 44 tackles, eight passes broken up and two interceptions. All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference free safety in 2000, when he took part in 44 stops, broke up eight passes and picked off 11 passes. Also returned nine punts for 108 yards. Won All-MEAC honors again in '01, when he recorded 44-7-4 and returned punts 24-387 and two touchdowns while playing cornerback. Moved back inside in '02 so teams could not avoid him and picked off a Division I-AA-leading 14 passes, which he returned for 455 yards and three touchdowns (including a coast-to-coast 100-yard return) -- all I-AA records. Also broke up 19 passes, took part in 61½ tackles and returned 22 punts for 145 yards. Won MEAC Defensive Player of the Year honors and the Buck Buchanan Trophy as the top defensive player in Division I-AA.

Positives: A really good athlete with fine size and speed. Smooth and fluid for a six-foot-plus defensive back and can turn his hips, change direction and close on the ball. Has fine ball skills and good hands and is very productive in terms of getting interceptions and returning them. Can return punts. Has the size and speed you look for in a corner and enough suddenness and turning ability to play outside. As a safety, has great range, and in two years at the position, picked off 25 passes. Has good hands and run vision. Very strong upper body. Has 381-inch vertical.

Negatives: Has not faced that many top receivers in college. Inconsistent hitter and tackler who takes some poor angles to the ball at times. Footwork and technique will get him in trouble at times as a corner. Is not a pure corner or a pure safety. Will not always play the ball well and has some trouble with passes over his head.

Summary: A good prospect with great workout numbers who needs to improve his tackling and aggressiveness if he wants to play inside, and his footwork and technique if he plays at cornerback. Has a chance to be a very good player but also could be just a guy, depending upon how well he corrects his weaknesses.

Is it just me or is this Dewayne Robertson love a little much. Now the Pats are offering two 1s and a 2 to Detroit for their pick to get him and may have to throw in a 3rd to complete the deal. It seems to me to be nuts that you trade that much for a defensive lineman which is the deepest position in this draft.

It's not just you. I'd never heard of this guy until about 2 months ago. He sounds like a typical dog DT.

What I don't get his they say workouts shouldn't matter, and what you do on the field is what counts. Well it sounds like Robertson is moving up because he had great workouts.

On the opposite end. EJ Henderson is extremley underrated. He's not expected to go until the late 1st round.

The Jets will be real lucky if the Pats do deal since that means Rogers or Johnson will slip to them.

I am an Eagles fan obviously, I saw Mike Mamula get drafted so you know how much I think of workouts. And show me a defensive lineman running a 40 in a game situation and I will show you a defensive lineman who sucked to get in that position in the first place.

Workouts are why I think the draft should occur, in early March. Teams have to by what a player does on the field and not what they do during workouts.

I'm sure he's a good player, but that is way too much for the Pats to give up for a position that deep.

I wouldn't do it. If the Pats are going to trade, I would think a team like Minnesota or Baltimore would be game and they would still be in a good position to draft a good DT (like Sullivan, who I picked). Belichick must be REALLY high on Robertson if he's willing to offer that much

I understand a lot of teams are panicing since they think there are only a couple of impact players in this draft, but I don't think anyone other than Leftwich and the two WRs are going to be the big of an impact anyway. This is a team building type of draft where it is deep through two rounds and I would rather have more picks (Dallas Clark not withstanding) not the home run hitter type of draft where you can get impact players throughout the first.

Belichick feels Robertson can anchor the 3-4 defense.

Don Banks wrote the other day, that people told him the Vikings are interested in Sullivan from Georgia. But sounds like the Pats are only interested in Robertson. So a trade between those 2 teams seems unlikely.

Tony Pashos

OT | (6-6, 337, 5.3) | ILLINOIS

By Pro Football Weekly

Notes: Redshirted in 1998 and started every game at right tackle in '99, 2000 and '01. First-team All-Big Ten in '01. Really made you take notice with the way he handled California's Andre Carter (first-round pick of 49ers in 2000) when Carter lined up across from him in 2000. Started all 12 games in '02 and every game of his career. Had more than 100 knockdown blocks for the second straight year. Earned bachelor's degree in May of '02 and working toward second degree. Named first-team All-Big Ten by the media and second-team by the coaches.

Positives: Has ideal size and durability. Quick off the ball and gets his hands up quickly. Has good pop and punch. Good, wide base and balance help him sustain blocks. Gets good fits. Can block on the second level. Very good use of hands. Stays on defenders. Good feet. Is tough, smart and works very hard to improve. Can be nasty and mauls as a run blocker. Knows how to run, redirect and anchor. Impressive upper-body strength. Bench-presses 500 pounds and squats 615. Benchpressed 225 pounds more times (38) than any other lineman at the Combine. A beast in pads. Looks the part.

Negatives: Can't handle top speed because he lacks foot quickness to protect the edge. Tends to lunge off the line of scrimmage. Not as smooth or consistent as scouts would like, especially sliding as a pass blocker. Bends at the waist most of the time and is not a fluid athlete.

Summary: Is a dominant run blocker and solid right tackle who must address recovery, foot quickness and ability to handle speed in pass protection.

With the 50th pick the New England Patriots select DE Antwan Peek, Cincinnati

Antwan Peek

DE | (6-2, 246, 4.62) | CINCINNATI

By Pro Football Weekly

Notes: Recruited as a wide receiver and moved to defensive back in 1998, when he had five tackles. Separated his shoulder in '99 opener and redshirted. Started at rush end the past three years but was suspended for one game in 2001 for receiving improper benefits. Had 37 stops, including 13 for loss, and 81 sacks in 2000. Also picked off one pass, broke up six passes and blocked two field goals. All-Conference USA in '01, when he had 60-22-12½ and blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown. Repeated as an All-Conference player in '02, when he had 90-22-6, caused seven fumbles and recovered five. Has weight up from 230 pounds to about 250. Showed great speed in pre-draft workouts but he is not as strong as some teams would like.

Positives: Good athlete and competitor known for his toughness and work ethic. Football is important to this player, and he has overcome a lot in his life despite a difficult home situation. A fine pass rusher and big-play maker who has good explosion and pop. Has explosive quickness off the ball and a burst to the quarterback. Plays all out and pursues all over the field. Has a knack for blocking kicks and has very good timing, balance and body control. Has a 37-inch vertical.

Negatives: Undersized defensive end who can get engulfed and buried by bigger tackles. Lacks experience at linebacker and may not have the feel for the position needed at 4-3 linebacker. Will get too emotional at times and let his temper get the best of him, leading to penalties.

Summary: Best fit would be as a pass-rushing end in a 3-4 defense, but he does have some situational rush skills. After his Combine workout, some teams may consider him at defensive end in a 4-3 because he displayed the quickness to play the run. Not the player his idol Lawrence Taylor was, but shows similar burst and acceleration off the edge.

Tyler Brayton

DE | (6-6, 277, 4.75) | COLORADO

By Pro Football Weekly

Notes: Three-sport athlete in high school (football, basketball and baseball) who scored a 1,090 on the SAT. Played in every game as a redshirt freshman in 1999. Missed the 2000 opener after violating a team rule. Cracked the starting lineup in '01, started every game and led the team in sacks with 4½. Posted 14 stops, including one for loss, in '99, and 28-6 and one sack in 2000. Started 11 games at end and one at tackle in '01 and recorded 44-7-4½. Played both tackle and end in '02, won All-Big 12 honors and was the team's defensive MVP. Had 62-4-7. Best game may have been vs. Texas Tech, when he had four tackles, one sack and scored on a 14-yard fumble return. Impressive 40 time (many anticipated a 4.9) boosted his stock.

Positives: A totally dedicated, tough-as-nails player who is a hard worker in the weight room and on the practice field. Is a team leader, a smart player and has quick hands and good quickness off the ball. He is relentless, making plays all over the field.

Negatives: Versatile, but a bit of a DE-DT tweener who will have to play lower inside. Has a very narrow build for a defensive tackle, and despite great weight-room numbers, cannot translate that strength to the field because of his body build. Is a little stiff and struggles to get leverage inside. Loses leverage by getting high and narrow. Lacks explosive edge quickness and speed for an end. The better the opponent, the more trouble he has making plays. Dominated vs. an average Texas Tech offensive lineman, but was not a big factor vs. Oklahoma.

Summary: A great-motor player who gets the most out of his ability, but has some limitations for which all the intensity, heart and hustle in the world can't fully compensate.
