I love:

Wu-Tang, for their slamming beats and raw lyricism.

I hate:

Master P, for his boring, repeditive beats and lyrics spanning the wide range of lyrical topics from hummers to platinum jewelry.

I like rap because of the great rhymes guys like Eminem, Jay Z, Snoop Dogg, and Dr. Dre produce.  I also love the bass, the beats, the way the songs pound in my truck.

Well frankly, those 4 are not the guys I'd pick as my example lyricists (except maybe Eminem).  The real lyrical masters are guys like Rakim and Kool G Rap.  The Rawkus crew (Mos Def, Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek, Pharaohe Monch) is great as well.

I like:

Wu-tang, Nas, The Rawkus crew (Mos Def, Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek, Pharaohe Monch), Biggie, Eminem, Tupac, NWA, and Run-DMC for the lyrics. Its story telling on music.

Jay-Z, DmX, Mempis Bleek, Eve, Will Smith, Ludacris, Fabolous, LL Cool J, and most stuff by the Neptunes. Because I like the sound and the songs are mostly good.

I hate:

No Limit, Cash Money, and Petey Pablo, crap crap crap.

People like rap because its one of the few genres that at its core, is completely different than any other genre. Rock and RnB at core are the same.

I used to hate rap with a passion, but then I realized I just hate mainstream rap with a passion... everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but stuff from the "Dirty South", "No Limit", most "Bad Boy", etc. just doesn't appeal to me.  I can't stand it when rappers just brag about killing and money and ho's and that nonsense, though ironically, I LOVE some of the old school rappers (Run DMC, Fresh Prince, etc.) who did the same thing, though in a much more playful, positive-vibed manner.  As for some of my favorites, most are more hip-hop than straight rap, like Public Enemy, 2Pac, The Roots, Wu-Tang, etc.  I like "underground" artists a lot better than mainstream stuff because it features better rhymes and more original beats usually, but as for why I like rap, why do I like anything? It's human taste... I like some beats and some rhymes more than others.  Why does anyone like anything? There's philosophy for ya...

As much as I dislike him, Jay Z is much better than Petey Pablo.

You're right, though, Midnight Express's list there is QUITE mixed.

I like rap because it tells a good story(Not mainstream crap) and I've just been hooked since i was like 10,beats,rhymes is what i crave

Wu-Tang clan is my favorite,i have to say when i started listening to rap i was like 9 and my mom wouldnt let me get the tapes i wanted so i listened to pretty much mainstream which, back then was mc hammer, vanilla ice, etc. then when i turned 12,mom gave me the power to chose tapes with parental advisory, the only memory that really sticks out about this rule was that when i was 10 she wouldnt let me get public enemy, fear of a black planet just because one of the songs was called get the fuck outta dodge.its weird because i was watching rated r movies from as long as i could remember, but a sticker on a tape prevented me(Till i was 12) from hearing good rap.I started getting tapes like Cube, house of Pain, etc. but it wasn't until i took a trip to the music store to buy the second house of pain album(I loved these guys) at a time when my mom couldnt stop me from staying up late to see yo! MTV raps i discovered that same day the Wu Tang Clan,it changed my whole perspective that i had about hip hop and thats pretty much the story.on a side note one of these tapes i got was dre's chronic and my mom flipped when she heard that shit, she was like did they just say fuck? she was like,i didnt know those parental advisories meant they could say fuck,i thought it was all #### and ####! that was one of the most hilarious times i can think of back in the day.

Well, I'm from where rap started, so, it's like it's genetic that I love rap.  Rap is in my blood, it's from the BX where I come from and I'm going to tell you why I love rap.  Rap is different from where the music was back in the days.  Notice that many of the artist were usually in rock and blues and some other shit that I really dont like.  Rap comes from people from my hood, people that I understand, thus, me loving them.

The lyrics that they talk about is life, and I've seen it and lived through it.  It's something that us people can talk about and feel about with the usage of good beats.

People who I like, old school, the fav 5...  Rakim, Kool G. Rap and others that doesnt jump to my head at this moment.

Nas is one of my favs. why?  Because he tells a story, and he's a poet, god, just listen to his lyrics.  Jay-Z is good too, he's basically the same as Nas.  Biggie put east on the map, and tupac, well, that's self explanitory.  The Roots, (Beats baby) Most def, Wu-Tang (Best group ever)..

Now, I've been listening to a lot of underground stuff lately and one of my favs are Cam'ron, Source Money, styles, red cafe, grath, 50 cents, eminem, royce 5'9, freeway, powerful, juelz, sacario...

My favorite rapper will forever be Big Pun...  I will honestly say that if he wouldnt have die so early, I say that he would of been the best rapper ever...

Well, that's my opinion.

IM LAUGHING AT YOUUUU!

Kor, Capital Punishment in my opinion was a classic...  The first latin to go platnum...  Deep Cover was a hot shit..  Still not a playa, and some other shit that I dont know what else...  "Yeah Baby" was another classic, it's a shame that people felt it when Pun die..

I'm laughin at you was the shit, but also 100% (Since I'm Puerto Rican) Off wit your (His) head, another hot shit...  You also have to remember the shit that wasnt in his album...  You know, like Banned from TV by (Nore) which he sucks, but of course Pun blew it up.  Pina Colada from the Ruff Ryder CD...

Like I said before, if he would have die so early, I feel that he would of been the best rapper alive...  I met him personaly, and the reason why I feel him is because he's gangsta...  When you rhyme about being a thug and live by it, than you're truely a gangsta...

C'mon, he pimped slapped Jay-Z and robbed him...  Now that's thug..

Well, that's all I have to say about Pun..

Kor, I feel you opinion and I respect it...  Atleast you're not bashing him because I would take it personaly...  He's one of the most down to earth person I ever met..  And he's gangsta, that's why I felt him...  And I shed a tear when he die, I went to his funeral and I never saw so many heads in a funeral...

Well, I'm out...

While I can understand the flak that some artist get, I really get disappointed when I see people that obviously know rap put down a guy with ginuine skills just because they went mainstream.  I love the rawness of underground rap and like the thought provoking rap just as well, but at the end of the day, it doesn't pay the bills.  Everybody got to drop a song or two that thier heart isn't really in.  Eminem, Jay-z and others who at their core have skills and can go bar for bar lyric wise with anyone have a grasp of the business side of it all.  Hell, even Mos-Def had to drop Ms. Fat Booty to get attention, and we know how hot he is. Thats just the way it works.  Then, people listen to the singles that are out to form opinions of the entire genre of music.  Those songs are something to bop your head to, something to get the ladies on the dance floor at the club, yet when I hear people say they hate rap, they think THAT is the music.  The only way you can truly apprectiate rap or an artist in general is hearing the entire album.  The non "Radio-friendly" songs is where the true art form can be appreciated.  For every "Look at all the money I got" song Jay-z has ever had, there are 4-5 Songs like "Where I'm From", "You must Love Me", "22'2" that show the lyrical talent that the guy truly has.

Another problem is that, while the hard beats is what attracts alot of rap fans, it is also what keeps away those that don't perfer rap.  If you are one of those people that don't like that hard beats, do yourself a favor and just don't pay attention to it.  Listen to the words themselves, because in the end, that is where the true beauty of it lies.  There are more lyrics in a verse of a rap song than there are in most R&B, and Rock songs.  These guys are saying alot, and if you listen you really might apprecitate it.

And while I really don't perfer most of the southern rap, I can appreciate it.  Its not meant for some to understand.  Hip-hop is made as a voice of the people.  While some may relate to one person, he/she might not be saying anything that another can relate to.  I basically assume that the Southern rappers like Cash Money, P, and others are realating to their target audience in a way that alot of northern rappers can't.  Just because I don't relate, I wouldn't say that it is shiot....its just not my cup of tea.

There are just so many rappers that I love, I would be hardpressed to name them.  From Kane, to Jay-z, Eminem, Kool G Rap, Biggie, Pun(oh yeah, y'all trippin, Deep Cover didn't have shiot on Dream Shatterer:) ) the list can just go on....And although I have been disappointed in Nas for like 5-6 years now, One Mic is the hottest rap single this year.

Ripper, you just hit it right on the chin.  Many people that dont like the beat quickly turn away from it and dont listen to the lyrical masterpiece the rappers throw.  I, for one, do listen, that's why I'm into underground rap, where rappers are in their finest.

On the other hand, I'm not really into commercial rap, people like Ludicris and Nelly is just not my flow.  I'm into the more hardcore rap that's not "Radio Friendly" as they say.

One of my favorite rappers that I failed to mention is Cam'rom.  He hit it right where it suppose to be hit, gangsta.  I'm into the rap that I can relate to, and I can understand where it come from.  I also like the battle rap, where they just spit about one another and dont get violent (A bit like commercial, but not).  People like Jay-Z, now, where he spit some underground shit, that's when he's one of the best, but I cannot hate on him when he hit a club banger.  He's making his paper and I respect him for that.  Do I like what he rhymes about when he's doing the club banger, not really, but I dont hate on him, I still think he's one of the hottest, if not, the hottest rapper out there at this moment.  Same goes for Nas...  He's a poet, and most of the rhymes that he spit I really could relate to, but sometimes he goes to the extreme, although, the reason why I like him is because he makes me imagine.  Say, "Street Dreams"..  Now, I cannot relate to it persay, but I can imagine it.

Eminem is one of the best lyrical mastermind there is right now.  The reason why people hate on him is because he's not radio friendly and still be on the radio.  It's understandable that for the rappers to be notice they do have to hit a club banger, but that's not always true...  If you're into the underground jam like I am, and buy CD's of them, they will certainly be notice in a later time.

Ripper, I respect your opinion and most of the things you said I do agree.  You are one of the people that know about the rap industry and I respect that from you.

That's basically all I have to say..

See the thing is, I ALWAYS HATED Jay-Z, i never liked him, even when he was underground. But i'll admit he does have talent, but he isnt the greatest. I DO like some of his songs like "Girls, Girls, Girls", "Rengade", "Hard Knox Life" etc.

But I HATE him, i always have, and always will, unless he saves the world from total distruction.

Eminem is very talented, people only hate him, because the amount of teen base fans who love him. They overlook the fact he has talent.

As a African-American teenager, who was born from New York(But move to Calgary, at the age of 7), i can honestly say that most of the kids at my high school love Eninem, except the bitter ones, who are jealous because he was succesful.

Jay-Z hasn't put out shit that has impressed me since Reasonable Doubt.  Hard Knock Life was a crap album.  I heard Blueprint was real good, but I didn't pick it up.  I'll stick with Stillmatic, thank you.

The reason why I give Jay-Z respect, is because he always come out with some hot shit...  Granted, I personally dont like him (And his commercial rap) but he's talented.  I mean, when he heard Nas with that Ether shit, he went to the studio and came out with Super Ugly in 1 day...  Now that's impressive..

I'm a Eminem Mark...  He's one if not, my favorite Rapper...  Well, I know, I said I got favorites and shit, but, he's hot...

All I'm saying is, listen to Cam'ron...  That's all I have to say about that.

Cameron, was about 10thousand times better back in the Children of the Corn days with Blood Shed.  Mase was the man too.  They really suprised me after they got signed, because I didn't believe the they were the Killer Kam and Murda Mase that I remembered.  Cam has got his swagger back though and I am looking forward to his Rocafella release.

I started a thread a while down and no one answered, so I'll shill it here: if you like rap, or even if you don't, check out Cannibal Ox.  Just download "Vein" or "Battle for Asgard" or "Iron Galaxy" and listen.  It's strange but beautiful, thick, raw, smart stuff that sounds like street poetry and just feels right.

I guess I'm the only one here who doesn't like Eminem... how disheartening.  Anyone who wastes their lyrical talents on dropping the other f-word (the bad one, rhymes with maggot) and creating false controversy for the sole purpose of selling records is not fine by me.  I guess I wouldn't mind the fact that he's a misogynistic homophobic bigot if he actually was, but he's only doing that because it gets him headlines, which gets him on MTV, which gets stupid kids to buy his records and think he's dope.  The other half of his songs are just him whining about how nobody plays him on the radio and everybody hates on him... HELLO? Your songs ARE played on the radio, and people hate on you because you're hating and you're not real.
