Guest Ripper Report post Posted May 23, 2002 I find Kay slay to be just as annoying as Clue at some times. But neither of them have any thing on Stretch Armstrong...the most annoying DJ on earth. STTREETCHARMSTRONGISINYOURWOOORLLLDDD!!!! screaming over my music isn't what I like to hear. And I have a unatural hate for most of no limit, But Mia X, Mystical, and Fiend have always been favorites of mine. Guest razazteca Report post Posted May 23, 2002 During the early 90s there was a surge of Jazz influence rap, which I found refreshing and new. Groups like the Digable Planets, US 3, and Jazzmatazz Volume 1 by Guru were on the radio and BET promoting rap as music while at the same time while the "I'm from the ghetto" image was getting alot of press. But the Retro beatnik, style of the Digable Planets did not last long, after a year it faded away as fast as MC Hammer's image as a thug. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Guest ant_7000 Report post Posted May 23, 2002 MC Hammer as a thug that was funny but he did have some hits with that new image "Its all good" and "Pumps in the Bumps." Suge Knight always felt that everybody that he signed should have a thug image. As for the Jazz influence in rap I think its slowly making a comeback I bought the Cee Lo Green album and it was jazz/funk/soul influenced and the album is decent I would give it 4 mics. And also jazz influences are in the Go-Go band music in the D.C. area which I want to get know the sound, Is that music like what The Roots do? I remember everyone talking bout how great they were because they were different and positive and such. To parapharase Chris Rock "Just because its positive don't make it good. Just because ain't nobody doing crack or shooting each other don't mean that its entertaining." I tried...I swear, I tried. I listened to them, I listened to people trying to explain why they thought they were great, breaking down their lyrics and such...but at the end of the day, I still hated everything they did. Pretty much all I've ever known is hip hop and R&B, and I can't stand most rock songs so there you go... Anyway...my list: Likes: Jay-Z Beanie Sigel (hometown) Nas Public Enemy LL's old school stuff (Rock the Bells and I'm Bad) The Roots Biggie Redman Pretty much anybody in Wu-Tang KRS One DMX C-N-N The Lox Eve Fabolous Rakim OK: Ja Rule (is he a rapper or R&B singer?) The Clipse (nasty skills, but too one-dimensional for me) 2 Pac (I'm not gonna front, I've just never really listened to him. Outside of maybe 6-7 songs, nothing of his really stands out to me) Snoop Outkast (Their songs bug me out sometimes) Eminem (See the Clipse) MOP P. Guest ant_7000 Report post Posted May 28, 2002 Im looking at the topic subject and actually I never answered why I like rap and live the Hip Hop culture. Like rap because I can relate to the stuff that cats rap about, I've been and seen some those situations myself. I grew up mostly living in the hood (It wasn't that bad though) and hanging out in the streets and social issues that go on in the black community, when they rap about that stuff like the hood or a position on a social stance on something it speaks to me unlike rock, and true the hood/ghetto is way too glorified but its the truth though. The reason I like rap its spontaneous you can rap on the spot if your good. at it freestyling (Rapping), Beat boxing, DJing/scratching, and pound on tables for beats it creates nice rhythm (or use instruments if avalible) that's what makes rap so unique to me. Unlike rockers they can't Freestyle or can't do anything without instruments like beat boxing. I know you rock fans be like why don't they play instruments? The answer is most rappers do play instruments but its not necessary to need instruments and usually it gets overshadowed. So don't say they just steal music because they play instruments when they want to, and believe me it is just as hard to make a beat with a machine as coming up with note or chord with an instrument. I found myself liking (old) Dre & Snoop, Warren G, Wu-Tang (especially GZA and Method Man), Fugees, Ludacris (the only act I really like THESE days) and a few others. Mostly because they're catchy, they have a good flow and their music actually sounds good. Can't stand/never could stand Eminem (I hate whiney-voiced rappers who sound like they have a finger shoved up their nose), Puff Daddy, Ja Rule, or any of these other newer acts that are just so musically hollow and suck on so many levels. Guest razazteca Report post Posted May 31, 2002 recently I saw a video by Blackalicious on BET "Make You Feel That Way" and the special on Soundblasting on MTV and have to say that I am enjoying the positive promotion of the positive Hip-Hop. I did not know that my favorite song from Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 was featured on Soundblasting 2!!!! I think the rappers name was Skills, or something similiar to it. Also MTV has been running news segments on J-Live, of his struggle to get a studio release, even though his record has been hot on the underground circuit.
