Paul Stanley 0 Report post Posted April 17, 2003 I will be reviewing KISS "Grunge/Alternative" songs.. The first one comes off "Carnival of Souls", better yet known as the last 'Revenge Era' album(Kulick, Simmons, Stanley, Singer) KISS knew that the era of music they were doing was fading quickly while Rap, Grunge, etc. were taking over. Gene suggested to try a new sound, much a sound like Soundgarden or Nirvana. They were brave, because the last time they tried to do a new sound it failed(The Elder) while people(like myself) love The Elder to death...the die-hards hate it. So after Alive III/Unplugged they started to work on the album. It's more of a Bruce Kulick album since he wrote most of it but Bruce is a genius because he can make anything work..Something happened, The Reunion Tour. So Carnival of Souls had been put on a definite hold and Bruce & Eric were on a paid vacation. Carnival of Souls was released in 1997 and sold over 30,000 copies. While this may be poor, the album was only released in 7 select cities. So far that number has grown to 150,000 sales. Toby Wright who had produced stuff for Alice in Chains was in charge...Let's begin 1. Childhood's End The rumor has it this song is about Eric Carr, even though him and Gene never met til 1980. I lived a life of illusion and you had your kicks So what, there's nothing left to do And you and your obsessions and your crucifix As if what I thought mattered much to you Sunday morning in the New York Times I read you died last night It said you were smilin' when you blew your mind And the note you left behind said You were always my friend from Childhood's End Seems like forever and ever Yeah, you won't have to have to pretend It's near the end You won't ever be a rock and roller Strong song nonetheless. Here's a clip: KISS - Childhood's End(Right-Click) --- This next one is from Psycho Circus. 2. KISS - Journey of 1000 Years This is a Carnival of Souls demo, remastered. I like it as well because the sound is so much perfect for this kind of song. The last parts of the song have a guitar solo that has bits of "Psycho Circus" (this song is where they came up with Psycho Circus) I know just where you come from Where all your yesterday's are gone... And now you're done But you've only just begun It's time you opened up the door... And now it's all very clear This journey of a thousand years Can you feel it coming? Can you feel it now? Can you feel it coming? Or is it the roar of the crowd? Can you feel it coming? Cna you hear it? Or is it the roar of the crowd? KISS - Journey of 1000 Years(Right-Click) -- 3. KISS - Within Within is like... God Of Thunder, War Machine, I Love It Loud, all mixed in. Cry without tears See without sight Night without day And every day's black as the night Fly without wings Feel without touch Touch without feel And everywhere nothing is real No audio sample available. --- 4. KISS - I Will Be There Off the Carnival of Souls album..Paul Stanley wrote this about his son and it's his son's favorite song. I like this one the most. Each and every day People turn away Change the things they feel Change the things they say We can never know Where our lives will lead Wherever you go Whenever you need I will be there Wanna be there I will hear you when you call Give you anything at all I will be there Anywhere Like a father to his son --- KLASSIC REVIEW~!!! Ace Frehley - New York Groove(Live in Japan!) Awesome Peter Drum solo to begin and then Ace rips into it and vocals are excellent..too bad he couldn't stay sober! Ace Frehley - New York Groove(Live)(Right-Click) Feedback is appreciated!
Guest swan Report post Posted April 17, 2003 (edited) I had no idea of the limited release of "Souls". I don't remember how I even came to own it. We use to jam it when we had parities back in college. Fuckin' rocks. What could of been. Are you sure of the sales figures? It charted as high as 27 on the Billboard 2000 in '97. Guest Steviekick Report post Posted April 18, 2003 Carnival was a good album. I liked the direction that they were going in on Revenge.
Guest pochorenella Report post Posted April 19, 2003 I think it was an ok album. Maybe if it was released when it should've been and with better promotion then I think it would've done better. Personally, I'm not too hot for the drum sound on the whole album, it sounds kinda flat, I dunno. My fave track off this one is Master and Slave. I also have the KISStory book and I don't recall it stating the album's sales figures or the limited release. I'll check it out again. The KISS release that really pissed me off was the one that came after Carnival, Greatest Kiss. It was such a poorly-put comp CD that I almost didn't buy it (and I own every KISS album, even multiple copies) but I found a mexican edition with 4-5 extra tracks and went for it. This album also ruined KISS' Top 40 album streak.
