Question regarding Spirited Away

Just finished watching it again , mind-blowingly good film. A question for those in the know:

 

1) If Chihiro is rejected off the bat because she's a human, what are we to believe that Lin and the rest of the bath house workers are? I can't recall them ever mentioning that Lin and Co. are humans though it would seem as much.

I just assumed that they were spirits, so they weren't human any longer.
