WrestleMania buy rate

Recommended Posts

Guest Pigsy
You DO realize they'd make not that connection, but they'd instead say that buyrates are hurting because Bradshaw has been injured or something?

Don't forget that damn Sponge Bob Squarepants.

As for all these arguments about which match attracted the most fans... I think the only thing to do is to find all the people who bought the show and ask them why they did. Otherwise it's all just opinions and speculation.

The hype for the Rumble was around a 60 minute battle royal and HHH v. Steiner- two wrestling matches, one a "dream" match.

Who the hell considers HHH vs. Steiner a "dream" match?!

The Rumble itself always sells the show pretty well, unless there is a really shitty undercard.

I loved the Rumble 03 for the Rumble itself and Angle-Benoit. However, I noticed how much the crowd lost interest when Jericho was dumped, because then they knew who would win.

That's why I put it in quotes. We don't (we being the IWC) consider it a dream match but I'm sure some marks did and it was hyped that way.

Then the match started.

That's exactly it. And not one of us is going to get up off his ass and do it.

The two friends I went with-

Well one likes Scott Steiner (okay- I didn't say he was intelligent or anything)

And the other went for the Rumble match and to see the Undertaker return.

Yea I know- I have friends who are mega marks

Well...given the buyrate isn't the better question why didn't people order it?

All I know is that I can't wait for the next WWE conference call when Linda McMahon has to put a positive spin on THIS...

Linda: WrestleMania drew approximately 550,000 buys, which is somewhat lower than we anticipated...

Shareholder: We were told to expect 850,000... You weren't even close.

Linda: We are in the process of building new stars, a process that takes time.

Shareholder: Your most heavily promoted match at Wrestlemania featured two guys with a combined age of 105. NEW stars?

Linda: As we move forward, we will continue build our new sta-

Shareholder: FORWARD? NEW STARS? Since Wrestlemania, we've seen the return of Roddy Piper, Jimmy Snuka and Sable. I'd say this ship is going BACKWARD and we ain't stopping until 197- ...

<click>

Moderator: I'm sorry, but it seems like we have some technical difficulties and we just lost that last caller...

New caller: Hi, I just want to say that match between the Hulkster and I- I mean Mr. McMahon- was absolutely the most historic match in the history of Wrestlemania! ...

Sounds like WWE is in real trouble if their biggest ppv gets beaten by Royal Rumble.

It's still way too early to determine the buyrate. These are all just preliminary numbers.

And Angle v. Benoit wasn't really the main selling point of the RR and I don't think it affected the buyrate at all

When numbers were thrown out the same week after Mania I thought it was too early for sure, but this is almost a month later, these are more concrete and legitimate, I think.

Kurt Angle main events his first Mania, and the buyrate bombs, therefore Angle will go back to wrestling in the 2nd hour vs Kane next year and HHH will take the spot, since 2 of the last 3 Manias had HHH in the main event and the buyrates were about 820,000 for WM 16 and 800,000 for WM 18, 2 of the highest all-time.

Technically I don't think there could be an argument that Angle v. Lesnar was ever really promoted as the main event. Hogan v. Vince was supposed to be the top match (right behind Rock v. Austin) up until just days before the show happened. Even in the Mania XIX program from Safeco, that was the headline match.

well on the RR thing caual fans dont really think that good wrestlers are the popular ones.....like to a casual fan Steiner would be good and big show would be good because they win....... they would think steiner is a better wrestler than benoit becaus ehe wins more or did win more. AND RR was hyper around steiner - HHH and The RR match

Regarding the sold-out thing, I think it probbly sold out.

I saw adverts on the web site for "tickets still available!" until the day I left, but there were enough people around town that wanted to go but didn't have tickets yet to fill in the cheap seats.

Then again, maybe they didn't, but I'd be rather suprised.

I'm pretty sure they sold out, they had released about 5,000 tickets over Mania weekend and they went from what I saw. To me it looked clearly sold out being there live. I believe the Observer reported a legit sellout as well, although I'm sure it wasn't official until the walkup the day of the show.

Has anyone mentioned that the Royal Rumble was a combined brand-PPV? This could mean two things: (1)People bought it to see Raw vs. Smackdown *OR* (2)People didn't buy it because there would be no surprise entrants which is part of the appeal of the RR.

This is great news. I hope every PPV that Vince and his fossils headline bombs, along with the TV ratings, maybe then Vince will get the picture. However I have a feeling that Angle will be blamed for this, much like Jericho the year before.

well if Jericho and Angle had another 20 years on their bodies maybe theyd be big draws like Hogan and Vince.

I think you may have a future with the WWE booking team. Seriously though, that is probably what the WWE thinks.
