Easter and God and Stuff

Recommended Posts

Guest tank_abbott

I'm not a big believer in God...I'm not atheiest though....Agnostic I think is the word to describe me... Anyways I'm catching majior heat recently from my parents because I refuse to go to Church anymore... I haven't gone since LAST easter and all I did was sleep for 45 mins during that mass... Before that it had been a long time as well since I last went... My parents are devout Catholics, and we have relegious emblems and pictures on almost every wall in the house... So they are obviously worried about my state of mind... They used to force me to go to church, literally taking away my freedoms if I didn't comly.... but since i turned 19 I've refused to go...

I figure why bother going to church and going through the motions, if the all knowing God knows I'm just doing it to appease my parents...

And what if Jesus wasn't really the son of God, and GOD is pissed at us all for worshipping a false idol for the last 2000 years...

I like theories that say things like "Mary was raped and pulled off the most elaborate cover up in history" even if i don't believe it...

But on the same token, I enjoy relegious programs (A+E, Discovery channels kind of stuff, and Movies about Jesus etc)

I also have a cross hanging in my car for "protection"

So I guess I'm hypocritical...

Your thoughts??

All i know is that...whenever i go in a Church i hear hissing and my skin begins to burn.

Sunday is also the National "get high" Day for the lame potheads that buy into such a mainstream idea. It's also Hitler's birthday and the premiere of Family Guy on Cartoon Network.

It's also the Fifth Annerversery of the Columbine Tradegy as well...

I am not a Christian, Those whom been here long enough know this...

I always viewed Easter as the Sham of all Holidays...

SOH said it best

"Stop The Prayers

Hit the snooze

You can always go next week

hell, Don't even go at all.

If God is everywhere, Then why even go to church? If he is sitting next to you on the couch?

How do we even know if there is a god, Anyways?

The Church is a farce, A way to judge you

You need to take control of your life

realize that YOU are your only judge.

Do something more valueable with your time.

and if there is a God,

He'll Forgive you

I'm not telling you anything, You don't already Know"

i think kierkegaard got it right, in regards to figuring out the nature of believing & its place in human life. that said, i may be too immersed in "objective thinking" to have the "passion" for attaining the "subjective truth" in the "moment."

You know, if the virgin Mary was raped, it wouldn't really be the most elaborate cover up in history. Number one, all she'd have to do is say 'God did it', and number two, if you know about it, it's not a very good cover up at all. Lincoln killed Kennedy... that would be a good cover up.

Not that I think anyone believes in that, just musing.

Well...Then comes the question "Who Tapped that Virgin Ass"...Please...I never brought that crap...Mary wasn't no damn virgin...

She had too much to drink one night and let Paulo the Shoe buffer slip her the Impaler and got pregant and they preceded to do this whole Hoax.

Well, the Mormons believe (at least they used to, they tend to change their doctrines all the time) that Jehovah appeared in the form of a man and fucked her.

Besides, the four gospels were written by people who knew Jesus. He'd just have to say "Guess what guys, my mom was a virgin." That's much better than your mom being a slut.

Oh, the Mormons. How they disregard and twist scripture to fit their needs.

I think everyone knows my stance. Easter in it's timing has little to do with the Ressurection of Christ. it was, I believe, adopted by the Catholic church way back when as a means to attract Pagans to hear the gospel, by giving one of their yearly celebrations a biblical meaning. I still enjoy Palm Sunday through Easter Sunday, as a reminder of arguably the most important part of Jesus's whole ministry.

As far as I know Easter is probably the most important religious holiday to my faith.

After all, everyone gets born, but only Jesus ever got resurrected.

Easter is a time to have too much for dinner and eat candy.

What other meaning is an atheist supposed to attach to it?

We don't really know if that's correct...

It's never been proven that voodoo priests can't raise the dead.

There could be some unknown tribe in the deepest part of the Amazon that has the power of resurrection and it's normal occurance for them.

I saw a voodoo witch doctor raise the dead once, but I was probably hallucinating.

Amen to that. Next to Thanksgiving, Easter is the best holiday for food.

When it comes to Christmas and Easter. I don't believe in all the religion that is attached to them, but I try to be nicer on those days. For example, yesterday I put up with my extended family and somehow didn't mouth off to be insane grandmother.

As for Christmas, that holiday hasn't had anything to do with Jesus for quite a while now. I think of Christmas as a day to give people shit and they give you other shit. Simple as that.

Commercial Christmas hasn't, no. But Jesus has never been detached from it where it matters -- in the church.

You are correct. I was speaking from my own perspective on society, which does not include the church. Just the media and general public.

So SpiderPoet which holiday/event is more important? Jesus' birth or his resurrection?

The Ressurection. Without it, the rest is meaningless. Lots of people believe he lived and died. It's that he was risen that defeats death for us all. It's an element of who He truly was: God in the flesh.

I think Paul states in one of the epistles that our faith is useless without the Ressurection. I'll have to look it up.

What are your thoughts on non-believers celebrating Easter and Christmas? Which despite Santa Claus, and the Easter Bunny are Christian Holidays.

If I'm not mistaken, Christmas and Easter, in their timing, can be linked back to Pagan holidays that the early (Catholic) Church adopted and gave Christian meaning to, in order to perhaps draw in some of those people to hear the Gospel. IIRC, some modern Christmas decorations have Viking origins or something, but I could be wrong.

Because of Santa Calus (who has Christian roots) and the Easter Bunny and Presents and Candy, there are pretty much several different reasons to celebrate now. Some religions still recognize versions of the harvests or whatever that the early Church took and gave Christian meaning to.

People can certainly celebrate however they wish. For us Christians, they are the two most important times of the year, and far more sentimental and remindful than a good meal (although God does seem to have a thing for big meals and banquets!) and presents.

When Easter falls on is determined by a lunar calendar. A lot of Christians will do the Easter thing for their kids, but as far as recognizing Jesus' death, we are supposed to do that all the time so Easter is almost just an excuse for someone to say they got their church fix for the year.

Palm Sunday up to Easter is recognizing his death. Easter is for the ressurection. :)

It's all stuff Christians should be recognizing all year. Yet some only recognize it during a determined time that is determined by means that aren't even related to Christianity or religion really.

I don't mind it as a holiday. It's fun for the kiddies. As long as we remember the death burial and resurrection more than just in April every year.

Oh, I agree. Don't get me wrong. It's importance demands that it be remembered. It's perhaps the cornerstone of how it all works.

Cowards masquerading. Those who never realized the potential of being in Christ. We were not given the spirit of fear, for we should have none. Especially not on a message board.
