flyboy is the only mega-whore to downright say "fuck the post counts".

Your statement is flawed. Do I post whore? Yes. Did I post whore constantly? Yes. Have it trimmed down? Yes. When I do '+1' in a thread, aren't the threads usually shit? Yes.

Plus, I never said "fuck the post counts". I said 'Fuck that noise'. Was I referring to post counts in place of 'noise'? No.

sorry for paraphrasing or thinking you were actually coming around to the fact.

as for the +1 comment... that is the point... since the threads are shit, eliminating the post counts will directly help eliminate an amount of shit because there would be absolutely no reason to waste space with a +1 thread or "i agree" or "lol". dames wants to get rid of shit piling up on the board and feels eliminating post counts will do that. I feel the same.

with all that said, it is nice to see you take a stand against post counts with your 'zero count". i thiunk i will do the same for mine...

When does this voting end??

Except for +1- I don't really see the other two all that often.

And all this stuff is only occuring in No Holds Barred. NHB is the place where presumably anything goes so what is the problem??

I don't think eliminating post counts will do jack squat and it looks like the majority of people agree with me.

Here's a foolproof way to stop dumb threads and banish ones that show up to the lower recesses of hell.

DON'T POST IN THEM!!!!!

Have a little self control and hold back any snide comments you have. Then it will die a quick, appropriate, death.

If the mods are so sick of the post whore threads- then delete them or close them.

Why cause the whole board to be affected because of pretty much one folder?

Because using authority usually results in rebellion and I can just more of those threads started to spite the mods.

And Bob, weren't you always one of the people making fun of those who cared so much about their post counts? Why do you seem to be the number one defender of them now that it's a possibilty that they may be on their way out?

Well, if you are basing that off what happened at the old ezBoard, that was (IIRC) because Scott was being a real dick about things and yanked the Flaming folder and post counts pretty much without getting other's opinions and telling people he was doing it. I think the mods here are pretty levelheaded and already have a low tolerance for crap. This place definitely has less than other boards of this size out there (*coughDDTcough*)

I just got back on the positive side!

Personally, I don't care. I read everyone's posts, regardless of whether they have 3 posts or 3000.

If I were pressed to make an answer, I'd pick keep them. It's just another rash of people trying to get over on a message board. It'll be over soon.

As for the freezing of post counts, NHB and General should be frozen, IMO. Mostly due to the waste threads there.

And before I go:

Oh come on, it's just like a birthday cake!

Although I mentioned threads in that statement, I guess I refering to use of authority in general, everyday situations. Often times, it's met with rebellion, sometimes making thing worse than they were before. I.E.- Any parent punishing their teenage kid.

Either freeze the NHB and General Chat post count option, or get rid of post counts altogether.

EDIT: Oy. Clicked on the wrong voting option.

I voted 'I don't care' because I don't have a preference one way or the other. But I can see more good reasons for getting rid of post counts than keeping them, perhaps the most convincing of which is that they're just worthless at the end of the day, nor should anyone be proud of it nor should they have any bearing on your quality as a poster.

A point about being able to tell n00bs apart was brought up. You should just be able to tell by the 'Joined' date on that (non) issue anyhow.

But while I think they may curb the +1 thing, I don't necessarily think they'll slow down the short replies.

The best solution, I think, would be to meet halfway and go along with the earlier suggestion, by moving the Word Association and Person Above You threads to NHB and freezing post counts in there. This goes along with freezing the counts in OAOAST, but that's more up to the mods there.

It happens in the bad threads, so what's your point?

Ok. And then we'll have an outcry in this folder from people saying, "Waaah! Why was this thread closed?" You know it would happen. Bob, you're one of thr first people who usually creates a thread asking why soandso was banned, so I *know* you know it would happen -- you do something like it yourself.

This is a situation where the administration is damned if they do and damned if they don't. Eliminate post counts, and people will bitch. Close obvious post whoring threads, and people will bitch. Personally, if we're keeping post counts, I'd love to aggressively close obvious post whoring threads and ban people for starting too many of them, but we'll have to see how something like that goes over.

cause using authority usually results in rebellion and I can just [see] more of those threads started to spite the mods.

Indeed. I can see threads like that popping up a lot. "They closed my Mission to 50,000 thread? I'll show 'em!" I'd really rather not go on a banning spree and draw comparisons to the decline of the old Smarks EZBoard if I can help it. We just need to find the best solution.

I don't think a higher post count makes you a better poster, but it does say to newbies that "hey this guy is an active poster. If I say something to that poster I'll probably get a response. That guy also knows what's up around here."

Plus it gives you perspective on how much you've put into the board.

And by the same token, as a newbie, all I have to do is look at the date a certain poster joined. It's not hard to rack up posts in one day or one week, so post counts really mean nothing when it comes to how long someone's been here. Some people have been here for almost a year, and yet have under 500 posts. And some people have been here less than that and have close to 1000. Post counts really don't mean anything, it's just the message board version of "mine's bigger than yours."

Kill 'em all.

For an example of how no post counts works in the positive, peep the Socialist's Sanctuary (check one of Polk's sigs, because the link has inexplicably disappeared from the main page, and my bookmark erased). It's criminally underused (even by me... I admit my hypocrisy), but there's no fat whatsoever. Although much of that lies in the tightly-knit community that posts there, I also believe it has something to do with the fact that no post counts = no whoring.

Besides... as MaxPower mentioned, shouldn't you read someone's post regardless of whether they're a "newbie" or not? I mean we were all newbies once, and I'd like to think I wasn't ignored for like a month just because my post count was under 200 ;)

Seriously, as long as we can change custom titles, I'm all for it.

IMO, post counts don't matter to me. Possibly they could be stored in some databank on this site somewhere, just for the records.

By that theory, you're basically saying that quanity=quality. It doesn't matter how many posts someone has, they could still have contributed nothing. Someone with five posts could have contributed more to the board than someone with 5,000 who spent most of their time in NHB and GC post whoring just to get to that number. Personally, I look at what's being said, not at who posted it or what number they have under their name. Tons of people here have thousands of posts and honestly, I think even many of you'll agree, it certainly does not make them a good poster. I think maybe that's the problem with some people; they look at who's posting it and how long they've been here/number of posts and judge the post by that rather than what was actually said.

I voted no, simply because I like seeing how many posts I've made as a reference point.

But quite honestly, I never even noticed when I passed 1000 posts because I don't pay real close attention to it.

Keep the count in My Controls and do whatever in the actual threads.

Fuck it, these message board deals are all about fun, and nothing more. This is a form of entertainment for us and that's that. These "mission" threads, "word games" and stuff like that is just for everyone to be a goof and to just have fun, and it's not hurting a thing. If you have that much of a problem with it, then make a "Games" forum or something.

The +1 deal is almost ONLY in either the above threads, or just plain bad threads. I'd rather you ban stupidity rather than means of some people having innocent fun.

Will the "Don't Care" votes get added to the "Yes" votes?

Smartass.

WDI was in the back of my head when I made that post, but it wasn't the main reason I asked.

Exactly. I've been registered since March 20, 2002 and I have only 550+ posts. That's mainly because I only want to contribute when I have something worthwhile to say, I'm content reading threads otherwise. I think getting rid of them would increase thread quality. But I think you should take them away, like a couple months, and then have another vote.

All I know is, when they were taken off the old ezBoard forum, there was nearly a revolt. But I think that was more due to the heavy-handed management...eh, either way, I don't care.

EDIT: Yes, I know this point's been mad ealready. What, you expect me to read the whole friggin' thread?!

Something to note:

Out of 3209 registered members, so far only 100 have voted as to whether or not post counts should be disabled.

Methinks that if you don't want to see another Smarks/WDI mess on your hands Dames, that you had better make this thread a top priority and put it at the top of the board with a link letting everyone know they need, not should, vote on the matter if they have any input.

This idea might sound ridiculous or like a waste of time but after the Smarks exodus, nothing surprises me when it comes to how posters will react when things like post counts are taken away.

Just saying.
