Okay, okay, so they written for young adults, but I really find them entertaining! I have the set so far... Anyone else like them?

Absolutely love them. I was very anti- Harry Potter but my roommate in Melbourne had the first one. I ended up reading Philosphers Stone and then went through the rest of the set in about a week and a half. Couldn't put them down. Now I absolutely can't wait until Order of the Phoenix on 6/23.

HP and GOF was the best in the series, IMO, with the tri-wizard tournament and the very dark (and not child-like at all) ending.

While working at a bookstore, I read all of them during the looooooooooong hours at the cash register. I liked the first two as fluffy entertainment (like Neil Gaiman with softer edges), but the third and fourth impressed me as serious storytelling.

I've only read the first one and thought it was ok.

I thought it was overrated, but I guess that anything is gonna be overrated what it has as much hype as Harry Potter

I really liked them, GOF was by far my favorite of the four due to it's very serious nature near the end and dark style all throughout the book. Plus, looks like Snape is going undercover baby!

This is the first series that I can remember where it gets better with each one. I wasn't very impressed with Philosopher's Stone, but Goblet of Fire is amazing.

I personally think Prisoner of Azkaban was really the best bit of storytelling. Goblet of Fire does a might fine job of completely altering the status quo of the series.

I've only watched the movies, and I can't say I liked them too much, but with that being said I can definitely see where they would entertain millions of people. I dunno, maybe I'm just an ignorant flatscan...er muggle.

starvenger: The problem is that its in the third and fourth book that the magic of the series really takes off. You should really give them a try.

I might do that, but to be honest it's not high on my list of things to read (I've got a backlog of about 4 books right now), based on my seeing the first 2 movies. First impressions and all that, I suppose. Maybe I just need a little more sword to go with my sorcery, or something.

Starvenger: Book 4 is actually really, really grim. Good though.

What kind of fantasy are you interested in? I'm a fan of Goodkind and George R. R. Martin

I like Terry Brooks, and Salvatore to a lesser extent. And after watching LotR, I'm gonna have to get around to reading the books, although I have read the Hobbit.

I also like McCaffrey's Dragonriders series, although that's more of a sci-fi/fantasy hybrid.

You ever read Piers' Mode series. Very snazzy series if you can find it. His best work IMHO.

I'll comment on Anthony's stuff in the Piers Anthony thread...
